Merry Christmas SBC! For this year's present, we have two to go over: a small staff shakeup and new badge to obtain. The first staff change is that @Frosty the Snowman has been promoted to a Manger to fill Patty's spot! Thanks to all his hard work in helping plan Seahorse 15 and tech savvy knowledge, we felt he deserved it. He will help oversee Discord changes and influence SBC's graphic design going forward. The Canada takeover is imminent! The second is that @DarknessDG has been promoted to a Fry Cook! After all the talent he's shown off throughout Pictionary's run, and help with SpongeCraft Frontiers, this may come as no surprise. We look forward to the work he'll contribute to both the server and forum! One new badge has been added to the Badge Store: Loyal Shopper. You can buy it for 5,500 doubloons now! It’s that time of the year again: Today marks SBC's 14th birthday! It's hard to believe the community continues to prosper in some form and we continue to bring in new faces. A special thanks to everyone who continues to contribute in some way, whether through the Discord or forums. Remember SBC would never be what it is without the crew.

Fin! 140. SBCinema Film: The Truman Show Jjs is the unsuspecting star of SBCinema, a parody program filmed 24/7 through thousands of hidden cameras and broadcast to a worldwide audience. Clappy, the program's creator and executive producer, seeks to capture Jjs's authentic emotions and give audiences a relatable every The Kid. Jjs has been the star of SBCinema since he was born and Clappy officially adopted him from his Chather. As Jjs was selected from birth, Clappy claims that Jjs came to be adopted not just by the show, but by the whole "world". Jjs's hometown Community is a complete set built within an enormous dome, populated by forum members, who are actually actors, who highlight the product placements that generate revenue for The Truman Show parody. However, Clappy cannot predict all of Jjs's actions. During his college years, Jjs was intended to be shipped with WhoBob, but fell for an extra named Kat. Although Kat was quickly removed from The Truman Show parody before she could disclose its nature to Jjs, he continues to remember Kat, and secretly dreams of a life outside the internet walls. In the real world, Kat is a part of "Free Jjs", an activist group that seeks to cancel the parodies and have Jjs released. As SBCinema approaches its 10th anniversary, Jjs begins discovering unusual elements, such as the emote reactions falling out of the sky in front of his house and a Discord channel that precisely describes his movements. These events are punctuated by the reappearance of his Chather, who had infiltrated The Truman Show parody, with the crew believing the Chactor was somehow recast. Jjs begins questioning his life and realizes that the Cinema somehow revolves around him. WhoBob's stress from attempting to uphold the charade in the face of Jjs's growing skepticism and hostility causes their shipping to deteriorate. One day, Jjs takes WhoBob by surprise by going on an impromptu Jeopardy game, but increasingly implausible emergencies block their way. During an argument ignited by WhoBob attempting to promote another show for Jjs to watch, Jjs determines that WhoBob is a part of the conspiracy and holds WhoBob at chat point. WhoBob breaks character and is taken off the film parody. Hoping to bring Jjs back to a controllable state, Clappy re-introduces Jjs's Chather to The Truman Show parody properly, under the guise of having lost her memory after an accident. This helps the parody regain the views lead with audiences, and Jjs seems to return to his routines, except he begins sleeping in his basement. One night, Jjs secretly disappears through a makeshift tunnel in his basement, forcing Clappy to temporarily suspend the parody for the first time in its history. Audiences around the world are captivated by this unexpected event, and record numbers login to view the finale. This finale was made possible by audible. Clappy discovers Jjs running away from SBC. He resumes the transmission and, unable to fetch Jjs, creates a violent storm in an attempt to capsize Jjs. After nearly losing Jjs but failing to break his spirit, Clappy ends the storm. Jjs continues to run until he hits the wall of the dome between fact and fiction. Initially horrified, Jjs discovers a nearby staircase leading to an exit door. As Jjs contemplates leaving his world, Clappy speaks directly to Jjs through a speaker system and tries to persuade him to stay, claiming that there is no more truth in the real world than in his artificial one, where he would have nothing to fear. After a moment of reflection, Jjs says his catchphrase: "welp, back to the old grind clocks out", bows to his audience and logs off. The forum members celebrate his escape, and Kat races to greet him. Clappy's supervisor JCM, in a cameo, finally ends SBCinema on a shot of the open exit door, leaving Clappy to mourn over the truth of his defeat. Jjs's fans—the viewers of SBCinema—cheer upon his successful escape and then, after transmission ceases, ask what happens next. Epilogue - SBCinema Cast Members: Where Are They Now!? -We of course start off with Jjs, now ending the SBCinema once and controlling his fate for the first time in his life. He has decided to attend law school and dreams of becoming the next Saul Goodman. -OWM has taken this opportunity to become a future jedi in training. Rumor has it that he has now adopted the last name, Skywalker. -Everyone’s favorite Chather continues to be the most beloved member of this community and hopes that everyone knows how much they love her. She also becomes a wildly successful artist. -Fred has become a one million plus subscribed YouTuber with his own series where he talks about retail music playlists…which in this writer’s opinion is a very fascinating topic because he also can’t stand what retailers choose to overplay constantly. -SBL gets picked up by a major news network and continues to produce the finest newscasting this world has ever seen. An unnamed high level network executive renames his channel to SBLNN and it becomes the number one rated news network. -OMJ, now rich from his Deathmatch royalties, purchases ROH from Tony Khan and actually gives its own weekly episodic television series. He names Luigi Primo, the Pizza Guy, the first Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Championship. -Trophy sells his cannon…thus beating this ten year dead joke into the ground once and for all. He uses his cannon money to buyout Kirk Cousins contract, thus fixing the core of the Minnesota Vikings problems and why they will not win a Super Bowl with him at quarterback. -Katie moves to New Zealand. Need I say more? -tvguy, a famous politician, continues to ask Nuggets to get on Skype. But Nuggets is too busy topping the Billboard Hot 100 with Dinghy Freestyle. -WhoBob, also now free from the SBCinema, decides to purchase a podcast set from Amazon and launches his own podcast with WhoBro, where they talk about movies and television shows. The title is appropriately named The WhoCast Show. -And just like the above, Kylie and Kevin also top the podcast charts with their music takes. Taylor Swift regularly guest stars. -Rusty is the new owner of all Tennessee sports franchises. Although Rusty still can’t fix what is wrong with the University of Tennessee college football program. -SB&P finally figures out what the eggplant emoji on Discord stands for. -Wintermelon enters the Pokemon league and is now a league champion with his Level 100 perfect IV Arcanine. -Jelly starts up a Beatles tribute band with her family. Their tribute band becomes so big that even Paul McCartney is impressed and Jelly finally gets to meet her idol. -Fa inherits the Pittsburgh Steelers from the Rooney family. Fa's first job? Train Kenny Pickett to be the next great Steelers QB. -Steel becomes one of the biggest animation YouTubers and launches a GoFundMe to start his own cartoon. Thus leading to the resolution of our political landscape. -Honest Slug becomes the new lead writer of Family Guy after Season 24. He finally puts the show out of its misery and gets applauded by the fan base everywhere. -BobCarotte becomes a professional tennis player and wins the 2023 French Open dethroning the king of the clay, Rafael Nadal. -Maroon 5 finally break up. -Teenj succeeds Kevin Feige as the new head of the MCU. His first action is to reduce the oversaturation and focus on quality instead of quantity and not treating its graphic artists and writers like shit. The MCU goes back to reliving its glory days once more. -Omair becomes a famous photographer and even after all these years, he still has a soft spot for Nutella and llamas. -70s names his first child, Prudence. -CDCB and CNF meet up and start a weekly episodic television series about classic cartoons and animation. They go on to have a huge cult following. -Mythix buys King Neptune and follows through with his Winx Club Jeopardy idea this time. -Clappy finally wraps up this overlonged epilogue and goes to have a glass of milk and eats brunch. -And last, but certainly not least. JCM, no longer in a cameo, moves into the leading man role. He watches over us all and is the hero when SBC needs him to be. Because sometimes the cameo isn’t good enough. Sometimes the cameo deserves more. Because sometimes cameos deserve to have their faith rewarded. He's the hero SBC deserves, but not the one it needs right now. Hello everyone. It’s uh… certainly been a while since I’ve last properly interacted with the community. Had things get in the way, new interests and places have taken my attention, all that gubbins. But today I bring forth a (probably not so) shocking announcement. Tomorrow (which will technically be today for me in me time zone when this is posted) will consist of 3 personal milestones for me. It will be my 23rd birthday, my 10th anniversary on SBC, and finally, I will be retiring from my position as both an administrator, a member of the graphics team, and any other staff positions of the SpongeBob Community. I imagine for most of you who actually knew I was an admin, let alone existed, and especially due to my massive lack of activity for the past few years, this is almost certainly you saw coming, and clearly took way too long to actually do, and indeed this has been something I’ve been wanting to do for the past year, but never been able to get around to planning it. Until now. The main reasons I’m stepping down include not just you know, not actually being involved much with SBC for years, but also because I’ve moved on to other communities and other interests, as well as a mix of fatigue, similar to how I felt back in 2016 when I stepped down as moderator, and being in a depressive mental state which has only since gotten worse. While I have still been producing graphics and helping out with skins and events, in comparison to what I’ve done back in 2018 and 2019, I really have not been doing much, and I’ve always been feeling guilty about taking up both an admin position, in addition to a graphics team position. Since I haven’t been particularly active in long time, my activity levels will not exactly be changing, however I will still be on SBCord and will still be available to be randomly pinged for stupid reasons. Before I end this chapter, I’d say to like one big final thanks to me fellow admin-buddies jjs and JCM, me graphic team-buddies Cha, Local, sbl and Katie, (oh yeah and the mod somebodies), all former staff who I’ve worked with over the years, a very special mention to SOF, and everyone in The SpongeBob Community. The past 10 years have been an absolute blast here, whether that be making friends, or planning an exciting event, and I think the time is more than right then ever to finally rest. Welcome to S.B.C., our prehistoric themed event! For the next two days, the community has gone back in time to the age of cavemen. This has been a very highly requested event theme for years and while we wanted to get to it eventually, we never felt it was the right time...until now. Yep, that time was none other than an innocuous April 1st B.C. Here is what activities you can partake in during this massive event: Speak like a caveman. No Squog fwee fwee! Play in the Stare at Fire minigame and hope you win something cool! B.C. Bowling: Between now and the end of April 2nd, whoever gets the high score in his game will get a prize! It's that time of the year again: SBC's birthday! Today marks SBC's 13th year of existence! It's truly amazing how this community continues to live on in various ways, whether through the Discord, forums or both. Forums as a concept are long past their glory days but it's still heartwarming to see people still wanting to contribute to them when they can, which means a lot to the staff. We've also reached the point where SBC has outlived tv.com, its originator, which is surreal to think about. Also, the Better Call Saul finale airs today so we're blessed to have that honor too.

Our last team event finally reaches its end, and it was the most intense competition we've ever had. The Krew and Buddies kept tying so many times, but in the end, only one prevailed... They demonstrated true tyeamwork which helped them edge out to the final lap. these are just some quick sketches i did not too long ago. i've been trying to get back into drawing, particularly cartooning, which is something i haven't regularly done for years now. sorry for smudges and un-erased lines, these pencils aren't the best. i also uploaded the BLEH one to my computer and made a digital version with my stylus (did not draw the background). i hope i can keep improving until i can draw the most perfect show-accurate pictures.

GREETINGS COMRADES! So it's been 3 years (!!!) since the last time we did this and to celebrate the sponge man's 25th anniversary we're bringing this tradition back and your favourite carrot will be the host! There are a few changes compared to other editions, and one of them, as you can see in the title, is that we're doing 30 episodes instead of 50! Many of you know how this works but if you're new don't worry, it's easy. Can you feel that? You better hold on. This one's about to get rocky. Nearly four years ago, we waved goodbye to SpongeCraft, our classic creative Minecraft server, after several years of operating as our flagship gaming hub. Now, after nearly a year in the works... SpongeCraft is returning with a vengeance, and in a form like never before. In this game of survival, players will take a nearly 500-foot leap of faith directly into the world of the Frontierlands, a diverse, rich land of unusual formations and proportions. After making their way out of the Landing, it will be up to players and their skills to survive, thrive, and improvise in this uncharted world of pillars, mountains, and plains. Just as with classic SpongeCraft before it, Frontiers will be operating for the foreseeable future using the 1.12.2 1.14.4 version of Minecraft, with ViaVersion allowing it to be backwards-compatible with newer clients. Also keeping with tradition, this is an offline server, meaning that players without Minecraft accounts will be able to join in on the adventure as well! It’s that time of the year again, and for my Christmas Eve present, here's my next Spin-Off Direct! I got a lot done this year in terms of writing: gave Skodwarde a better send-off, closed the SBCinema’s doors with Clap's beautiful ending, ended One-Time Star Wars Characters, gave Scooter’s Paradise a surprisingly decent new coat of paint, riffed Family Guy's not so funniest moments, and put in some of my strongest writing in Most Wanted. Due to how much I juggled this year (which is impressive given my job), my writing output for 2023 will be smaller, but there’s still enough on the plate to pack a punch. Here's what I have in store... 1.) Aquatic Avengers: Unite! This is a Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy miniseries which will be the final entry in my Jjsverse. Yes, for real this time. I’ve milked out all I could from this formula and I’m ready to move on, but not before going out with a bang. Mermaid Man: The Brave and the Bold was my first spin-off going onto SBC and I felt it’d be a poetic full circle ending to do another Mermaid Man work for my last SpongeBob spin-off. I always wanted to take another crack at a Mermaid Man story but could never think of a good idea until now. Since we’re never seeing the dynamic duo in the actual show properly again, I figured this would be a touching tribute to do. A couple of points I can share about it: Synopsis: Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are brought out of retirement by a powerful threat to all superheroes and supervillains alike. It will be 10 chapters. There will be shoutouts and easter eggs to JCM and terminoob’s Mermaid Man spin-offs (as you can already see from the title) along with teenj’s superhero works. Some characters from Brave and the Bold will be loosely canonized into the Jjsverse. Night City will also appear. It will have a present and past flashback structure similar to Most Wanted. Since this is my grand finale to the Jjsverse, there will be tie-ins and cameos from Storm Racers, Mystic Guardians, Pirate Legends and Most Wanted, but nothing too crazy. This will also act as my own personal response to the overexposure of the superhero genre, so there will be inspiration from The Boys in there. I firmly believe this will be a very high note to end the Jjsverse on. It's been a hell of a ride, starting all the way back with Storm Racers in 2011, and I never even intended to branch it out this far. It was fun building an expansive undersea version of our world. However, sticking to that setting has shown its limitations and has been awkward when my past few entries have barely related to SpongeBob anymore lol. Five books in this story is a good number to end it on. This will come around spring and I’m going to spend the next few months mapping out every beat so it’s perfect. 2.) Jjs’ Riffing Theater 3000: Tales from the Internet This 10 part miniseries will celebrate JRT’s 10th anniversary in June 2023, and to bring us back to its roots, we’ll be riffing fanfiction again…but this time, from outside of SBC! Each fanfiction will be a goofy one-shot from something SBC’s had common interest in over the years. (such as SpongeBob, Breaking Bad, Owl House, etc) This is basically an expanded version of the original theater's One-Shots finale. One fanfiction we’re definitely riffing will be the infamous Dipper Goes to Taco Bell. Since these will be from people we don't know at all, these will be more fun to riff. Yes, this is a cheeky way around me not wanting to riff SBC works anymore. I will start production on this around May. If anyone wants to be a part of this or provide story suggestions (note that it must be a one-shot), let me know in advance. There are obviously a lot of contenders to pull from across the internet, so I'm going to choose only the best, most legendary candidates to riff. 3.) One-Time Power Rangers Characters: Where Are They Now? Yep, not letting that One-Time torch die just yet. This will be a collaboration writing between Ex and I, celebrating 30 years of Power Rangers and acting as a tribute to Jason David Frank. (RIP ) Unlike One-Time Star Wars Characters however, this will only be a brief for fun miniseries, it won't go on any longer than that. This will come in the summer, closer to the 30th anniversary of Power Rangers. Will this be my final year of writing stories in general? Probably not, because you know how many times I’ve promised that before. However, I’m getting older and don’t have the time I used to, so we’ll see. Not gonna make any concrete promises yet, but if there has to be a final year for me as a regular SBC writer, then I think 2023 would be a much better note to end on than 2019 would’ve been. At the very least, should I write anything again after 2023, it won't be anything SpongeBob related or adjacent, I'm positive on that.

Let's goooooo I wanted to make a throwback to the days when people would post screenshot forum lets plays. Everything is randomized- enemy teams, wild pokemon, their types, their moveset, their abilities, and even who they evolve into. Exciting! My rules are as follows: 1. If a Pokemon faints, it is considered "dead" and stored in the PC box forever. 2. I can only catch the first 'mon I encounter on any route. If it's a duplicate, I may reroll the encounter. I'm also allowed all gift encounters but not two from the same place (So only one Samuel Oak mon) 3. Must nickname all Pokemon after someone based, badass, or tight as hell. (TW: NSFW jokes, nothing extreme but your average shitty internet humor. Light sexual references etc etc) Alright, let's go Chapter 1: Exposition That wraps up the first part! Lots of exposition, so I think from now on we're gonna blitz through this beginning. I'm gonna trim a lot of the fat so we don't end up with any more do-nothing parts, but I wanted this nice welcoming Chapter 1. The decision to cut a lot of the beginning story out should hopefully not be a problem, I hope nobody is using this as their definitive way to experience the game for the first time LOL. So recently, I was reading TVTropes and saw this: This is a very serious issue. As it turned out, Mr Krabs has mutilated Squidward's genitals by cutting them off. This is horrifying, as Squidward has done nothing wrong and deserves to have genitals. Mr Krabs probably cut them off for work purposes, or even just because he likes doing genital mutilation (just like he loves commiting genocide). In my opinion, Mr Krabs should be arrested for this, and be required to pay Squidward's hospital bills. He cannot be allowed to get away with this. What do you guys think about Squidward's genital mutilation?

As 2023 reaches the end, SBC closes out the year with our winter holiday celebration. From December 11th to December 27th, Snowcember Ball 2023 will spread holiday cheer across the community. One change to this year’s is the Snowball Contest, where much like the Candy Contet at Octerror, each game and activity will reward you with snowballs. Whoever has the most snowballs by the end of the event will receive several magical gifts, but whoever comes in 2nd and 3rd overall will also receive prizes. If you come in last during a game or lose a minigame you can lose your snowballs, so watch out. Here’s a list of what activities to expect: Stop What You Are Doing - Holiday Edition: SWYAD returns for the 48th edition. Decorate your username with a holiday or cold theme. April 22nd officially marked 10 years since the first episode of Community Deathmatch dropped. So just like I did with the SpongeBrawl 10th anniversary, I did my damnedest trying to update the very first Deathmatch for modern SBC audiences on WWE 2K22! I was originally gonna have it just be a Last Man Standing (keeping opponents down for a 10 count is the closest thing to simulating death in this game), but the match I ended up getting out of it was boring and ended on a very anticlimactic note. So I just ran it through a trio of way better Extreme Rules matches, with the winner to be decided by a “Best 2 Out of 3 Deaths” stipulation (just imagine the referee’s 3 count as being the loser’s final three gasps for air). Unfortunately, there will be none of that vintage Jjs & OMJ commentary accompanying it. My setup is just my PS5 at the moment and that’s it. Apologies to anyone who might’ve been looking forward to the chances of that happening. I honestly wouldn’t blame you if you just left now lol. Without any further ado, LET’S GET IT ON! Hi again, y'all! Now that I've crash-landed into the SBC cash register, let's get down to business. While applying to become a mod here, I said that my agenda as a staff member would be to help bring more video game-oriented experiences to SBC, especially now that it seems Amogus is on its last legs for us. One idea that came up right out of the gate was the possibility of us reviving SpongeCraft, our good old Minecraft server, and using the same map. A lot of us have had some fond memories (and unfinished projects!) on SC, so if we could get the server back online some time in the future, I think that would be great! But, be warned: If we give this idea the green light, it'll take quite a while to get underway. I would most likely have to self-host the server, and while my current secondary laptop is capable of running a rudimentary server, it's nowhere near powerful enough to sufficiently run a Minecraft instance. A potential SC revival would have to wait until I can afford to either buy a new computer (and repurpose my current laptop into server-hosting duty) or subscribe for a VPS. After that, it'll be a probably-tedious process to get all of the required plugins working before launch. In short: don't expect this to happen any time soon. (Also, it'll almost certainly still be using Minecraft 1.12.2, for both server stability and ease of use for people with terrible computers.) I'm pitching this publicly to ask: are any of you interested in this idea? We almost certainly won't be hosting events on a revived SC, so it'll be around purely as a side activity for all of you to enjoy at your own leisure. If you do have any other ideas you'd like to see implemented this time around, though, feel free to let us know.

WE'RE BACK! Sorry for taking so damn long to watch another season--a lot has been going on with my personal life lately, but I've finally been able to catch up! Anyone interested in my episode (and later on, season) rankings can look at my master doc here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/101bjY0onyYALsnhzV0eIUrzFDHmrq70g8SrH_mi_Li4/edit?usp=sharing This time, we'll be discussing the second season of Adventure Time, which originally aired from October 11, 2010 to May 9, 2011. Buckle up, people, this is gonna be a long one! --- Thoughts on Season 2, part 1 ("It Came from the Nightosphere" to "The Other Tarts"), written on 2023/12/14: So, what I’ve noticed from this first “chunk” of episodes is that Adventure Time is, slowly but surely, growing up with its audience. I believe this is the case through the addition of two major themes in the season so far: the characters being in mortal peril (for example, Finn literally almost gets the life sucked out of him in both “It Came from the Nightosphere” and “Blood Under the Skin”), and some characters dealing with parental trauma (see Marceline’s “Daddy, why’d you eat my fries” song from “Nightosphere” and Jake’s troubled recollections of his father in “Crystals Have Power”). While the show is still very much in “goofy episodic adventure” mode, I do appreciate the writers taking more risks with how big the stakes are in this season. I also appreciate how the writers refuse to stick to a formula or setting for every episode, with a notable example being “Loyalty to the King,” which shows just what would happen if the Ice King actually had the princesses fall in love with him. (Spoilers: he still turns them away due to his revolting personality once the princesses find out who he is, and they beat him up at the end of the episode. Girl power lmao!) If there’s any critique I have so far, it’s that the show might be a bit too overt with its sexual innuendo, even if said innuendo is coming from the antagonists of the story, like in “Power Animal” and “Crystals Have Power.” (The idea that someone wrote a bunch of adult gnomes forcing Finn, who is a child, to do “sexy pole dancing” to power up some sort of earth-moving machine in the former episode still strikes me as very questionable, but I’ll digress since I don’t think the framing of the episode condones such behavior.) Either way, a great start to the season, and hopefully more great episodes to come! Thoughts on Season 2, part 2 ("To Cut a Woman's Hair" to "Susan Strong"), written on 2023/12/26: Very, very sorry for the delay here! It’s been a quite hectic holiday season for yours truly - if you know, you know. When it comes to this second “chunk” of Season 2, things seem to be “business as usual” concerning the stories and character development, at least in the first few episodes that aired in 2011 (around “To Cut a Woman’s Hair” to “The Silent King”); in other words, the focus is still on goofy adventures, wacky comedy, and relative lightheartedness. While Princess Bubblegum starts appearing more often towards the end of this chunk in supporting roles—especially in “The Real You,” which we’ll get to—Ice King’s role seems to become more limited as an antagonist, only appearing in “The Chamber of Frozen Blades.” To be honest, I don’t have much beef with Ice King as a character; he’s more or less an incel with ice superpowers, and is rightfully framed by the writers as a socially stunted jerk. However, the Ice King is actually given some relatability and sympathy in “The Chamber of Frozen Blades” (he shares an interest in ninjas with Finn and Jake and even Finn himself states that invading the Ice King’s privacy by reading his diary would be wrong), and I do appreciate the nuance applied to his character here. That being said, I want to focus on three episodes in particular: “Her Parents,” “The Real You,” and “Susan Strong,” as they seem to be the beginning of a couple of long-reaching story arcs. “Her Parents,” while ostensibly a slice-of-life story about Jake pretending to be a rainicorn to impress his girlfriend’s parents, has the bombshell revelation at the end that the reason rainicorns eat “soy people” is because humans like Finn are not too common in the Land of Ooo…and this is written as a joke that can be easily ignored if you’re not paying attention to the dialogue, which is honestly a fresh take on foreshadowing such an important plot detail. This bit of worldbuilding will lead to “Susan Strong,” which directly deals with Finn’s search for other humans like him, and is arguably one of the best episodes of the show so far. In my opinion, this episode makes Finn showing Susan everything about the Land of Ooo in an honest attempt to connect with a kindred spirit pretty poignant, while still keeping a light-hearted and humorous tone in the writing. As for “The Real You,” I enjoy how the episode puts the dynamic between Finn and Princess Bubblegum into sharp focus, with Finn’s insecurities over “not being smart enough” to win Bubblegum’s love almost destroying the Candy Kingdom by way of an intelligence-boosted Finn blowing a fourth-dimensional bubble! Also, between you and me, I already get the feeling that Bubblegum just isn’t into Finn like that, though I’ll wait for confirmation of that from the show itself before sharing any more thoughts on it. The point is, this show is still really fucking weird, but now it’s getting weird in a way that seems honest, personal, and profound, even. Can’t wait to see more! Thoughts on Season 2, part 3 ("Mystery Train" to "Heat Signature"), written on 2024/01/03: This chunk of episodes continues the trend of silly, if somewhat darker, episodic adventures as well as some development on Finn’s awkward attempts at romance, as seen in “Go with Me,” and Finn blundering through trying to get Bubblegum to watch a movie with him in that episode is honestly freaking adorable. Kid knows he has feelings for her, but is too damn clueless to know what to do with them or even how to express them, which also comes up in “Mortal Folly”/”Mortal Recoil” (case in point: “the power of luh-luh-liking someone a lot!!!”). WARNING: Spoilers ahead for “Mortal Folly”/“Mortal Recoil” – there will probably be more of these spoiler warnings as we move forward with this series, so be on the lookout. Speaking of those last two episodes, I definitely was not expecting the show to have a “serious” story until later on in Season 3, even if the tone of the show had already shifted by this point from “silly, wacky adventures” to “silly, wacky adventures that could actually kill the main characters.” In any case, this dramatic two-parter was definitely welcome. I will try to give the briefest of plot summaries: While Finn and Jake are meditating with Princess Bubblegum in the Candy Kingdom, an ancient malevolent force known as The Lich intrudes on Bubblegum’s thoughts, and by way of a brainwashed snail (because of course, this is Adventure Time we’re talking about here), The Lich is released into the Land of Ooo to once again decimate all forms of life. Also, Ice King shows up to nicely ask Finn if he can take Princess Bubblegum as his bride. Can Finn and Jake rise to the occasion and defeat The Lich? While the first part is perhaps a bit awkwardly paced, the “Mortal” two-parter was not a bad attempt at writing a dramatic story at all. There’s still plenty of humor due to Ice King’s and later Jake’s misreading of the situation regarding Princess Bubblegum, and there’s actual real dramatic tension involving whether Bubblegum, a ruler of a kingdom that is literally populated by anthropomorphic sweets and pastries, could even survive being dropped into The Lich’s well of lost souls. This bizarre but enticing mix of the macabre and the absurd may be the beginning of what made Adventure Time great as a whole, and it’s already a fitting payoff to the darker themes explored earlier in the season on its own. As for how this two-parter was concluded…while I wasn’t necessarily surprised to see The Lich not really be defeated (he seems to have “final boss” energy already from his brief depiction here), I had completely forgotten that, in the attempt to once again save her life and not having enough bubblegum left to do so, Princess Bubblegum has been aged down to 13 years old–an apparent perfect match for Finn, who is also 13 by this point. This seems like it would create an even more interesting dynamic between the two–maybe Bubblegum might actually have feelings for Finn this time around? Maybe Finn might learn how to appropriately express his own feelings for her? All I know is that I am way more intrigued by this plot twist than Regular Show’s seasons-long “will they, won’t they” bullcrap when it comes to its own portrayal of romance (we’ll get to RS eventually, don’t you worry). The Lobsterrection of Jesus Christ On the night of Xmas Eve, The Planet Express was preparing to battle against the evil Robot Santa for the 20th time or something while also doing an Xmas party for themselves. Professor: Ah, gotta love holidays where you deal with a jolly terrorist and his bomb gifts. Leela: I sure as hell hope we can kill Santa this year, It's impressive how he manages to build himself back whenever we defeat him and shoot him out of this building. Fry: Whether we kill that robot or not, Leela, what matters is that I get to spend Xmas with my favorite crew in the world...and Zoidberg. Zoidberg: *sniffs* oh Fry, I really mean that much to you that you excluded me from my friends? Fry: Uuhhhh maybe! Bender: He hates you, you smelly red fish. Zoidberg: Awwwwww. Professor: Now, now Zoidberg. You can't expect us to be grateful for you when you do a terrible job at being a doctor. You always make our health much worse, both physically and emotionally. Oh well, lets eat some delicious xmas dinner. And everyone sits on the dinner table except Zoidberg. Hermes: Not you, crab. You always get up on the table and eat everyone's food. You shall wait until we all are done. Zoidberg: Alright, my friend! *sobs* Zoidberg goes to his office room and starts wondering why Planet Express doesn't value him so much. Zoidberg: I really would like to know where I do wrong. Is it because of my smell? *sniffs* Nonsense! Is it because I disturb people whenever I see a delicious meal? Ooohhh, cockroaches! *slurps every single one* Whatever the problem is, I really gotta make it up to my friends or else they won't accept me! What to do, what to do??? After hours of thinking, Zoidberg find the best solution. Zoidberg: OH I KNOW. Those co-workers value Jesus Christ! And I was Jesus one time! I shall become one again, therfore my friends will like me! Meanwhile after everyone eats their dinner: Amy: I'm really starting to wonder If we were a little harsh on poor Zoidberg in holidays. Bender: Nonsense! That smelly shell deserves what's coming to him. Hermes: Smelly? You don't even have a nose. Bender: I'm just stating from how I'd smell If I was a stinking human! Professor: Oh, I'm sure he's fine and not doing anything stupid. Suddenly, smoke has entered the room but who would cause that such thing? Zoidberg: Man, Professor's smoke machine really does its work. Alright I gotta impress my friends now. Zoidberg comes out of the smoke and reintroduces himself. Zoidberg: HELLO MY FRI- I mean BELIEVERS! IT IS I, SANTA'S BFF JESUS! Fry: Oh boy! Jesus has resurrected himself once again. Professor: Fry you stupid ass. That's clearly Zoid- *Leela shuts Professor off and whispers to him* Leela: Hold on professor, I'm curious what is Zoidberg's game here. Zoidberg: On the day of Xmas, I decided to bring you all wonderful blessings and love cuz I love sharing love and wisdom to those who believe in me. Scruffy: Actually I am an atheist. Zoidberg: BAH, who needs that religion when you have the real deal! Hermes: So Jesus, you really love disrespecting other people's beliefs? Zoidberg: No, no! I was just stating I'm real. I have been revived from the dead! Fry: So you're a zombie? Zoidberg: I mean...If you look at how slow I'm walking because of my weight... Amy: Oh brother. When Zoidberg was doing all those nonsense speeeches, the crew realized the clock has hit midnight. Leela: OH NO, IT'S XMAS DAY. THAT MEANS. Robot Santa blows up the roof and starts shooting the crew. Robot Santa: HO HO HO!!! IT'S TIME OF THE YEAR WHERE YOU ALL GET STOCKED INTO MEATY XMAS GIFTS!!! Professor: You will never get me alive, you red freak! Robot Santa quickly grabs him. Robot Santa: Alright, you old brute. I'm gonna make you swallow this bomb, so you can boom in front of all your friends. Rest of you, enjoy your precious human detonator! Robot Santa shoves bomb up to Professor's stomach, drops him to the floor and leaves the building. Leela: HOLY CRAP WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO??? Bender: WE ARE DOOMED EVERYONE!!! Whoever makes out alive steals the stuff of the dead. Zoidberg: Oh god, my friends in trouble! They don't need Jesus, they need good ol' Doctor Zoidberg! Zoidberg rushes in and clears the way. Zoidberg: Everyone stand back, I'll peform a surgery and take that nasty bomb out of Professor's stomach. Professor: Hurry! A few minutes passes, Zoidberg manages to take the bomb out of Professor and deactivates it with his claw. Professor: Oh thank god you saved me Zoidberg. I should have never doubted you as a doctor. Fry: Gosh, Zoidberg, you really are something special. Sorry for being a jackass to you during holidays. You are a good friend. Hermes: As much as I hate to admit, he's right, you are always welcomed here. Professor: Although please don't pretend to be Jesus again. Zoidberg: You guys! I'm so happy to hear. Zoidberg hugs everyone in the room. Leela: A little too tight Zoidberg. Scruffy: Yup. Amy: Round of applause for Zoidberg! Everyone: HIP HIP HORRAY! Bender: Yea whatever. Leela: For saving professor, all the xmas meal you can choose is on us. Zoidberg: Thank you friends. That means a lot. And so everyone orders so many meals for Zoidberg to consume and while he eats all of them so quickly and gross, everyone's grateful for having Zoidberg as their best friend. The End.
