Even when it first aired, I was thinking "What the heck was that?"

This could be an alright episode, but it just doesn't work out. Yeah, we've seen Squidward abuse before, but something about this episode doesn't feel right. I'm not going to just call this episode out for overdoing Squid abuse because I actually think it's something other than overdoing it that ultimately ruins the episode. The Squid abuse jokes are actually pretty typical and average--nothing really over the top. I mean, none of the gags have that witty vibe that you might find in a different episode--most of them are actually pretty lame--but they leave the impression that they would normally work to the point of being tolerable at least.

Unfortunately, that's not how it goes here. The gags, unfunny as they already are, feel very forced and half of them go by as fast as they start.  It's funny actually, even when it first aired I knew he was going to crash his head through his front door. But anyway, the rant he gives there to SpongeBob and Patrick is a very confusing scene... am I supposed to sympathize with someone there? Yeah, Squidward has had his Sunday ruined by SpongeBob and Patrick but it's hard to sympathize with him when he's yelling so jerkishly at them. I find it hard to sympathize with SpongeBob or Patrick too because unlike other episodes, SpongeBob and Patrick just keep going at it and trying to be "good neighbors" to Squidward without even pausing to think that maybe they're pissing him off. Yeah, they finally do realize that when he yells at them, and yes, I know in Jellyfishing they were constantly annoying him, but in that episode he didn't even have a way to tell them to stop. Here he was telling them pretty clearly only to be ignored until it was too late.

Overall, this is a very bad and confused episode, not because of its "over the top Squidward abuse" but the way it's executed. It's worked previous times, but for whatever reason the writers just couldn't get it to work here. Definitely one of my least favorites, and I'm almost ashamed to still have the first airing of it on one of my VHS tapes.

Please don't kill me but I thought this episode was very good. I can understand why many people hate this episode though. I liked this episode because some parts like Squidward house becoming alive were very funny. SpongeBob and Patrick was getting on my nerves in this episode but at least they wanted to be good neighbors for Squidward and they apologized to Squidward after they realized that they ruined Squidward's Sunday but Squidward still didn't want them to be in his house ans he didn't accept their apology and he kinda acted like a jerk. I felt bad for Squidward at the end though. Most of you probably know this but I'm saying it again. I actually like Squid Wood and Cephalopod Lodge but Good Neighbors is much better than these episodes and I think Squid's Visit, The Thing and Boating Buddies are the worst Squid abuse episodes. I rate Good Neighbors 8.5/10. I don't recommend this episode.

I concur with Kaos and CDCB. Indefinitely.

Mike Bell, why? Why do you hate us so? It's no secret this is my least favorite episode of the entire series (yes, worse than APfG and OCM). It contains every element of a bad episode, multiplies it by 100, and has the audacity to form a script around those said elements. This isn't an episode. It's 11 minutes of Squidward torture porn, with virtually zero plot and very little actual humor (or attempts at it, alas). I could state the same to most Season 6-8 episodes, but there is something or two that makes this "special".

Normally, episodes like this one have Squidward doing something jerkish or otherwise egotistical, and becoming punished by karma with a sense of hilarity on top of that. Here, the aforementioned formula is absolutely BUTCHERED. Right off the bat, Squidward is tormented for...wanting to relax on Sunday? Really? It's nonsensical, and not in the usual Spongebob-y way. No humor is inducted, either, and what is turns out either predictable or lame. Abuse, abuse, more abuse. It repeats for the first six minutes, melting your brain off with its stupidity. And here it gets "good".

You know, later episodes like this also have the audience tend to sympathize with Squidward. Boating Buddies, Choir Boys, you name it. Here, it is the total opposite. So, how do they make the abused character unlikable? He screams annoyingly at Spongebob and Patrick. I understand, he's pissed off, but they shouldn't make him this angry. And then the duo realizes that they've been bothering Squidward. What could be a redeeming moment is turned moot when Squidward, being the .:dolphin noise:. he is, wants to vaporize the protagonists with his security system, even though they baked a friggin' cake for him, AND are not even terrorizing him! What an arse.

This is a confusing episode. You cannot sympithize with ANYBODY, no matter which side you are in. Everyone turns out bad. Spongebob and Patrick ruin Squidward's day, but Squidward does that too with his even bigger stupidity! The cake slips from Spongebob's hand, somehow, and malfunctions his security system. Squidward's house grows legs and destroys the city...*facepalm*. Random =/= funny. And we wallow under Squidward's depression, wanting to feel sorry with him again. CHOOSE A SIDE, AND STICK WITH IT! Anyways, the trio has to do community service for the rest of their side, because torture Squidward. He has to suffer SB and Patrick's actions, as well as his, and presumably from regret to depression. Fridge Horror, people. Man, this episode's got everything!

Horrid, horrid, horrid! Who thought this was a good idea?! And then begins the dark era. It is not only horrible on its own, but starts an era of bad episodes that have yet to end. Nine years! The good news is, this was Mike Bell's final episode. Nice decision making, Paul Tibbit! Let's just hope they do the same to Zeus Cervas.

Thus, with all that, Good Neighbors is the worst episode ever, worse than A Pal for Gary, worse than One Coarse Meal. Atlantis Squarepantis, Boating Buddies, Little Yellow Book, everything. I hate this episode, hands down, no further questions asked. It represents what is wrong with post-movie episodes as a whole. Good day sir.

OK, this episode. It tried to pull off the "naïve SB & Pat give Squid a hard time" type of episode but fails miserably. He just wants to relax on a Sunday! I also find Squidward to be very angrier than usual; i.e: smashing his head through his door. The rest is just classic undeserved post-movie Squidward abuse until the ending delivers the final blow. Aside from a couple jokes that were funny, this episode is borderline sea-bear crap.

Final score: 1/10

On the scale of the good episodes, this episode is just good. Not great or amazing, but good. It's got some good jokes (like Squidward's house attacking Bikini Bottom) and SpongeBob and Patrick apologized to Squidward, and even baked him a cake! If anyone baked me a cake, I would forgive them for everything they did! But there's plenty of better episodes, yet this episode isn't bad in any way. 8/10.

Oh goodness! Squidward should have used his words instead of stomping on SpongeBob and Patrick's fezzes! That hurt their feelings, and good neighbors do not hurt each other's feelings.

Welp, if there's anything I could say, it's that if I ever stated my current opinion on this episode back, say, 2014, I would've been mauled to death. Yep, I like this episode. I just can't take it seriously; even though Spongebob and Patrick are ruining Squidward's day off, it's done in such a manner that I don't really mind what's going on. Squidward yelling at Spongebob and Patrick was a great moment, and it sucks that this episode is shafted for being a "Squidward torture episode" (and, by the ways, who the hell uses that term seriously anymore?). Squidward's house turning into a robot was weird but, again, I can't take this episode seriously. Not even the ending of the episode really affected me that much. Even though I wouldn't call it one of Season 4's best, I will outright say that I enjoy this episode enough. Unfortunately, this was Mike Bell's final episode (and he had just begun writing in very early Season 4), and his other episodes were also pretty good, so I sort of wonder how the rest of the season would've gone had he stayed on for longer... oh well.

FINAL RATING: 7/10 (BETTER episode)

Good Neighbors. More like DIVINE Neighbors.

Spoiler

For real though I don't have much of a strong opinion on this episode either way, for the time it was a pretty bad episode but I like it more than most of the stuff after season 5 and before the 2nd movie

Though I see many people softening to this episode, I sadly can't share the same sentiment (Which is funny because one of my very best friends loves this episode LOL!). I think this was the very first episode of the show that was terrible, and is beyond a shadow of a doubt the worst episode of Season 4's first half (The only one that comes close to being as bad as this in the first half is Funny Pants). More so than just the excessive squid abuse all because he dare wanted to enjoy a relaxing Sunday, this episode is just plain.... STUPID! the giant robot, random scenes such as the cake scene and the dots splattering on squidward, among many others, this episode is just stupid and failed gag after stupid and failed gag. SpongeBob and Patrick here are also just diet versions of the annoying vermin they'd become in Seasons 6-8, and like I said previously, the squid abuse went way too far.

It's far from the worst episode to be sure, espeically since the tropes of Squid abuse and SpongeBob and Patrick being ignorant and annoying buffoons would only be done much worse later on, even in this very season (I.E. The Thing). But it's still a terrible episode that deserves every bit of hatred it gets now as it always has gotten (weirdly enough I think this is one of the very few episodes in which the hatred for it has remained consistent ever since it first aired LOL!), and compared to the rest of Season 4a (which in my eyes encompasses Fear of a Krabby Patty to Mrs. Puff, You're Fired), it sticks out like a nasty sore thumb. I'd say this is either the third or fourth worst of the season altogether.

2.8/10

The security system TAKES CONTROL OF SQUIDWARD'S HOUSE AND BEGINS ATTACKING THE CITY LEAVING THE MAYOR TO GIVE SQUIDWARD COMMUNITY SERVICE FOR THE DAMAGE HE CAUSED, EVEN THOUGH SPONGEBOB AND PATRICK WERE IN HIS HOUSE THE WHOLE FUCKING TIME AND WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING

GAAHHHH! FUCK THIS EPISODE. This episode is when the Squidward Torture Porns started to become a regular staple of SpongeBob's episodes and this one is just one of the most meanest, cruelest, and just plain unfair of them all. All Squidward
