I really loved all the random slapstick gags with SpongeBob trying to open that case he was never given the code to, and how he continually testified just about everything down to the mop that made Plankton trip, and the setting here's very different from the norm by giving a good parody of courtroom drama and making it really silly. ok tbh I haven't seen this in a while, so my thoughts are a bit krusty. I'll let jjs take this one. jjsthekid: This is a Season 4 episode I've always felt was a bit under-appreciated. I dunno, I really have a thing for court case episodes of tv shows, so I guess this one tickled my fancy. There's just a lot of good gags here, and the whole courtroom plot is pretty unique/different than what we are used to for SpongeBob, which they managed to work with brilliantly. I always found this one funny, even when it first aired. I also really liked how SpongeBob took up the lawyer position and tried his best to defend Mr. Krabs, showing how he truly cares about his boss deep down. While this may not be everyone's favorite S4 episode, I do consider it one of the best ones, and am glad to see it on the list. #47. "There it is. The finest eating establishment ever established for eating. The Krusty Krab." "Help Wanted" (w/ 54 points on 4 lists) Highest Ranking: #5 @Fred Rechid "SpongeBob gets a job at the Krusty Krab" More: Okay, why didn't this episode kick off the list? Oh well. This isn't the most funny or well-made episode by any means. The animation is objectively a mess, and the story is way too simple to carry much weight. Still, this is a pilot that I really like because it feels like the most hand-crafted, cared for episode in the show. It's animation's organic and the simplicity helps with its classic charm and genuineness, by allowing the characters to be really sweet and innocent. It even does a good job at capturing the feeling of getting a job for the first time. It's nice. Fred: Ah, the first episode. Honestly, what else do I have to say about this episode that hasn't been said before? It is truly one of the most classic episodes of the entire series. It introduces us to The Krusty Krab where SpongeBob works at. Mr. Krabs and Squidward send SpongeBob out to Barg n Mart to find a hydrodynamic spatula with port and starboard attachments. The conflict occurs when buses full of hungry anchovies arrive at The Krusty Krab. In the end, SpongeBob feeds them all Krabby Patties with "Livin' in the Sunlight" playing in the background. I'm a sucker for court eps, and this one barely managed to get on mine, I'll say that. 47: Indifferent on, it's a nice starter for sure, definitely a good introduction, but overall compared to the rest, I can't say the quality for this is above others to make it into the top 50. By point of value I can see why this would make it, but I see it from a different view. Honest Slug Posted July 6, 2016 Share Posted July 6, 2016 I love all 4 of these episodes. Squid on Strike has great satire and truly funny moments. Planet of the Jellyfish is amazing imo. I love the atmosphere and the humor incorporated in it. Krabs vs. Plankton is an episode no one seems to talk about but I really like it. It's a very funny and unique episode. It offers a surprisingly funny parody of the stereotypical 50's married couple by exaggerating it to the point where the mom (SpongeBob) is doing all the housework while the lazy dad does nothing before getting into too many arguments to raise the child (which I'm really happy led to Junior successfully flying). It's got plenty of fun gags just to emphasize this, where Patrick does no work for "Tomorrow for Sure," "Eventually," and "Uh..." or the absurdly huge mountain of diapers SpongeBob used to prove a point that he's lazy. It's a lot of fun exploring parenting by first showing the ideal family you'd expect, until the problems hit them like a steam train and it's impossible to even take care of the child in the midst of cleaning and fighting. I like that. Good for you. Hayden: Here's one for all you Spongebob and Patrick shippers. Or at least one where their conflict is intelligently and sharply written. Whether it's a delightful music montage, pile of clam diapers larger than Whale Blubber, or one of the most classic uses of time cards, the episode and its gags always deliver on the absurdity of the situation. To top it off, they nail the emotional moment of Junior learning to fly. I hope one day Spongebob and Patrick have another.....episode like this. *rimshot* #45. "Ya know, that reminds me, there's been something I've been wanting to say to you since the day we met. Goodbye. Next time you see me, this town will be eating out of the palm of my hands!" "Can You Spare a Dime?" (w/ 58 points on 4 lists) Highest Ranking: #4 @Hayden "Squidward quits his job" More: Well, let's just be glad this ended up on the best list in the end and everything's fine, okay? Okay. This episode is great. It's an incredibly fun role-reversal with gags pasted on at every second there was free time, whether its a random free sample or some freaky heart attachment, or more major like SpongeBob raising Squidward with such well-intent to become such a brat leading to a crazy breakdown where SpongeBob finally lashes out to get Squidward back into work. Whatever's done is fast-paced mayhem that makes it really fun and it's cartoonishly unexpected and random, yet always makes sense in the story to build up the conflict. It's a great look into SpongeBob's character and helps to balance him out by pushing him to his limits and showing a far more emotional side of him, and with that shows a surprisingly mature lesson of immediate kindness not always being a good thing, when one looks at how Squidward turned out after SpongeBob's pampering. If you say that this belongs on the worst list due to it being mean-spirited, you're not doing a good job even summarizing the episode as everything here's completely deserved as far as I know. Trophy: OK, first things first, to those that almost got this on the worst list, sit in the timeout corner. Just do so to make this easier. Good? Now that the hard part is done, this one is most certainly deserving, coming from a guy who had it as his 9th (is this going to be a trend where I commentate?) overall. So yeah, this episodes humor was quite honestly spot on, from Interpretive Dance Quarterlies, Mr. Krabs pretty much needing protection for his eye stalks, the whole "GET A JOB" with alphabet soup and the puppet show, to the dark parts of having to eat his own paintings, and of course, football playing king in space, with a mustache. I don't get how anyone could dislike this episode, and to counter one point, SpongeBob SPOILS Squidward, he never said no or that he was too tired, and pampered him like a little brat. This is essentially what Squidward became, so if anything SpongeBob brought it upon himself, and it backfired in a hilarious cartoon manner that you'd expect from the show. "SB-129" (w/ 59 points on 4 lists) Highest Ranking: #2 @Dr. WhoBob "Squidward accidentally freezes himself for 2000 years and experiences complications while using a time machine" More: This is a strange and interesting episode to say the least. It isn't one that's ever struck a chord with me, but it's fascinating to watch. I put that mainly towards how it went all-out with imaginative and surreal visual art to match the simple time travel concept. Sure, the "chrome is the future" setting is kind of stereotypical, but the fact that they acknowledged how weird it is with Squidward's insanity, making it really funny. Surprisingly it's also very quiet, delving in to Squidward's inner conciseness most of the time, exploring that he more deeply desires to be in his familiar roles, despite his presentation of being annoyed by it. It's not deep, but it's interesting and gives depth to him in one of the weirdest episodes possible. WhoBob: Nothing has changed for me, it's still my #2. My commentary may feel similar to last year's but I hope I will explain with different reasons why this episode is wonderful. I fell like this is the episode where the writers started to expand their imagination and go nuts with an idea. We see how future Bikini Bottom looks like and just how weird and crazy it is. SpongeBob and Patrick are robots in the future. In fact, we have 4 SpongeBobs and a two-headed Patrick, it's so nonsensical, I love it. Then we get to see Squidward find a time machine and use it to go back in time, as a result he goes to Before Comedy times, and we see him accidentally changing history in a funny way, primitive SpongeBob (an ugly meme in 2016 ) and Patrick just going nuts and it's so much fun. And we see Squidward in pure nothingness and it couldn't go crazier than that. I just love a really crazy and nonsensical style, so that's basically the main reason why I love this episode. We also have a bit of a sweet moment when Squidward misses SpongeBob and Patrick, and while Pizza Delivery started with Squidward being a jerk with a heart, this episode really expanded Squidward's character as we see him like to be around SpongeBob and Patrick, even if that moment was like 5 seconds, but still, small moments like that make me appreciate an episode even more. So yeah, those are all the reasons why I find this episode one of the greatest. #43. "We didn't get any money. But we found something better. We found the magic!" "Wishing You Well" (w/ 59 points on 5 lists) Highest Ranking: #2 @More "Mr. Krabs opens a wishing well" More: This has been a huge favorite of mine for as long as I can remember. While it hurts that it's significantly lower on the list than last year, I still think I'll always love this. SpongeBob give off such a happy, feel-good vibe here with all his child-like wonder towards the classic wishing well's magic, and it's really lovable that he put all the effort he could do in order to get his friend's wishes granted and continue to spread the happiness. It works great in both making me feel good, and by giving some great gags, in contrast with Squidward's pessimism, Mr. Krabs simply using it as a scam, and idiotic, but still innocent Patrick. I loved the sketch where Squidward gets trapped, claustrophobia and ribs and all, as the timing and roles were just about perfect comedy gold. It's just so memorable and crazy, as were all the wacky wishes and Mr. Krab's attempt to get the change in the beginning. It even has a really upbeat and innocent song that just makes it all flow together. Everything about this episode is pure happiness. That is, until you actually think about the implications, from SpongeBob practically being abused to work inside the well, to the messages sent that people are throwing away their lives by tossing their life savings down a metaphorical well to achieve a dream life that can't happen and how that leads to the depression of all the Squidward's in the world. It's even brought up in the song with ♪ "When your life's come apart at the seams and you've given up all your dreams, [this well] is just the means to make those dreams come true." ♪ For an episode so innocent and so happy on the surface, it's shockingly dark once you think of it and really makes me think. If anything that only adds to the replay value of an episode that I find outstanding from every angle. Steel: This episode did make my list, so I'll have to talk about why "Wishing You Well" strikes a chord for me. It's basically a breath of fresh air for an episode that's paired with "All That Glitters." It's also very memorable and the humor feels close to the standards of Season 3's humor. Most of the funny moments in the episode came from Squidward, especially with the whole claustrophobia bit with Patrick. Also, it's one of few episodes where post-movie can make "Squid Abuse" shamelessly funny. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
