Squidward1066
Am I the only person here who finds it a little weird that SpongeBob's surname is SquarePants? Obviously, the surname suits him because he really is square, but I find it unrealistic because he inherited that surname from his parents and both of his parents are round. He should be SpongeBob RoundPants or something. To prove my point, take a look at Harold Squarepants: Now look at Spongebob: See what I mean? ~Squidward1066
Wumbo
Harold's pants are kind of square...
Squidward1066
Harold's pants are kind of square... They're rectangular with rounded edges. Even if his pants were the same as SB's, they both look almost completely different.
Wumbo
Perhaps that's enough to merit the SquarePants name. Technically, SpongeBob's pants aren't square either.
Squidward1066
That's true. I still think it's weird that they could be related, given that one is brown, round and large, and the other is medium-sized, yellow and square.
Cha
At least he didn't inherit Bubblebottom (his mother's maiden name as revealed in Whelk Attack).

That's true - that really would be ridiculous. I had no idea Bubblebottom was his mother's maiden name; I'm going to read the Whelk Attack transcript when I get time. OWM
I think Harold's pants can pass as square.
CDCB
At least he didn't inherit Bubblebottom (his mother's maiden name as revealed in Whelk Attack). If he did, then "To Bubblebottom or Not to Bubblebottom" would be an interesting episode...
MMM
Umm..the mind of Stephen Hillenburg is behind this?
NegiSpongie
Well, SpongeBob's ancestor, SpongeBuck, had square pants.

crushingmayhem
Maybe one of his ancestors had square pants, hence why his surname is Squarepants. But overall, I think his surname was intentional.
Squidward1066
I think that Stephen Hillenburg probably chose the name SpongeBob SquarePants based upon SpongeBob himself rather than his family, although this is an issue that should be addressed ... at some point.Maybe one of his ancestors had square pants, hence why his surname is Squarepants. crushingmayhem
He did but not always your distant ancestor has the same surname as you. I recently discovered that one of my ancestors had a different surname than me, so a change can happen along the way. I suppose the same happened with Spongebob's family. So SpongeGar might have not had a last name at all.

That's really weird, given that he doesn't wear any pants at all.
NegiSpongie
Maybe it's a family name, and most just wear square pants by coincidence...
