Old Man Jenkins
It always tripped me out as a kid how they're round and SpongeBob's square.

crushingmayhem
It always tripped me out as a kid how they're round and SpongeBob's square. Maybe they get round when they get older.
NegiSpongie
I heard from somewhere that they're supposed to resemble actual sea sponges, unlike SpongeBob who resembles a kitchen sponge
Squidward1066
It always tripped me out as a kid how they're round and SpongeBob's square. I know, right? That's what I said on another topic. I keep wondering how they look so different and yet they're apparently related.

That's true - and furthermore, they're all yellow, too. Maybe the "yellow square" genetic skipped a generation...
OWM
Oh the wonders of sea sponge heredity. SpongeBob looks almost nothing like his parents IMO.
Space Cowboy
Maybe it's more of a heredity thing. Since most of his ancestors are square, maybe he inherited the square genes from them.

Squidward1066
Once I watched spongebob (when I didn't know about it) and I thought SpongeBob was a cheeseman and his parents looked like cookies Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk That's what I thought at first! I had to watch several episodes before I stopped thinking that SpongeBob was a walking and talking knob of cheddar cheese. Speaking of which, I wouldn't be surprised if SpongeBob's parents were indeed based upon cookies - they have a shocking resemblance.
patrick123
Hillenburg decided to use the name "SpongeBob." He chose "SquarePants" as a family name as it referred to the character's square shape and "had a nice ring to it Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
