Shark Tale
(I know this was put into Upcoming Season 9 Episodes, but it may be deserving of its own topic.) I have some sad news to deliver. After we all speculated on what the crew would do with Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy after Ernest Borgnine's tragic passing in July 2012, Vincent Waller has confirmed today what their fate is. Both characters have been retired for the foreseeable future, making "Patrick-Man!" Mermaid Man's last appearance in the series ("Super Evil Aquatic Villain Team Up Is Go!" would be the final appearance for Barnacle Boy and both together). This means they will not be physically appearing again in the show, or at least in major roles (as he wrote, they will still be mentioned like in "Company Picnic" and he also said a while back they could make nonspeaking cameos). Vincent also wrote in another tweet he felt nobody could replace Ernie. Sad to hear, but I totally understand and respect the decision.
What We Do In The Shadows
Like I said before, it's very unfortunate news, but I can understand the thought behind the decision. No one can replace Ernest Borgnine.

The Simpsons
"Up, up, and away!" August 21st, 1999 - October 27th, 2012 (or October 14th, if you don't count Patrick-Man)
Guest
Nobody could replace Ernest. Saddens me but it's better than having some bad new guy.
BoJack Horseman
It's still sad to see Ernest passing away. RIP Ernest and MM and BB episodes. :(

The Lion King
The MM&BB eps were always my favorites, even in the later seasons. It sucks that they're going away.

Cha
Oh well, they had a nice run. It's nice they're giving Ernie the dignity of his character and not reviving the role other than the comics.
NegiSpongie
Technically they did replace Ernie in Battle for Bikini Bottom. But it wasn't a very good voice, so I'm glad they're not using it in the show. Sad there won't be anymore episodes, I can't wait to see that episode with the really long name. The Guy With the Computer
It is somewhat sad, but their decision is understandable. Nobody could replace the original.
Popeye Q. Krabs
I think it's for the best. Good decision on their part.
SBManiac
How else would they have gone about it? Good thing Nick allowed the SB crew to retire Ernie's character with dignity. Same with Tim Conway and Barnacle Boy.
Clappy
That makes me glad to know they have retired the characters out of respect for Ernest Borgnine's passing. No one else could have done his voice (even in the video games apparently) and I couldn't picture it any other way.
crushingmayhem
While I enjoyed the episodes they appeared in I feel like this is the right decision. Sometimes we gotta pay respect to a man like Ernest Borgnine who made the role possible.
SpongeBob's #1 Fan
Oh no! This is terrible! But, still, it's also understandable!
