it's not as much about skill as it is about light 

I bet if you had gone to this location around sunset, it would have come out like those "professional" photos you see all the time. Look up the Golden Hour

you don't have to be a professional to take good pics

I've seen plenty of amazing professional, and plenty of horrible professionals (my sisters wedding in Pakistan )

Sadly, I took virtually no fall color pictures due to my hiatus, but I managed to take a few snaps of when the FIRST, subtle colors came.

If you do look to the left, you can see tiny spurts of color on those trees
