Popular Post Katniss
Thought I’d try my hand at writing a lit for once. What happens when you mix the drama of Degrassi with the members of SBC? Well, you’re about to find out. SBgrassi: it goes there. Episode 1: Mother and Kat Reunion, Part 1 Spoiler "Read it again, tyeam," Kat Jelson begged her best friend, Tyeamanuella "Tyeam" Work. Tyeam sighed. “C’mon Kat, I’ve already read it like five times.” Kat pouted, giving Tyeam that wide-eyed puppy dog look that nobody, not even a fellow 12-year-old, could resist. “Just one more time. Please?” For the past few weeks, Kat had been e-mailing back and forth with Allen, her pen pal. She was crazy about Allen. Not only was he a dreamy-looking brunette, but he was also smart, caring, funny and shared her love of Chris Pratt, tacos, and the environment. Kat knew that there were other, quicker forms of social media they could talk through, but she liked the idea of conversing through e-mail. It was kinda romantic. “Okay. ‘Kat, a girl like you deserves to have her heart preserved just like we should preserve the wildlife refuge. Stay cool. Love you, Allen,” Tyeam read. A huge grin spread across Kat’s face. She was on cloud nine. “He said ‘love you.’ He totally loves me!” Kat and Tyeam clasped each other’s hands and squealed. “How is it possible that he gets cuter every time I look at him? Like he might even be cuter than Chris Pratt,” Kat said, sighing happily. Tyeam laughed, pretending to fan herself with a magazine. “That’s a big deal coming from you.” Kat took the magazine away from Tyeam, smoothing out the cover. “Be careful with this! I want Spongetron to autograph it.” Spongetron Roboyan was a famed journalist who was coming to SBCGrassi for its 10-year reunion. And speaking of, Jelly Jelson, a member of the class of 2007 herself, was currently lost in nostalgia, looking at old photos from her high school days. She smiled at a picture of her as a teenager with little Kat, who couldn’t have been older than two or three. Jelly put the photo in a box and bounded up the stairs to check up on said daughter. “Kat, Tyeam, are you ready to go?” Jelly called from outside Kat’s door. “Just a minute!” Kat called back. Jelly sighed. “We don’t have a minute. CD is waiting for us.” Kat realized the e-mail from Allen was still up and quickly switched to another tab. She hadn’t told Jelly that she was talking to Allen and wanted to keep it her (and Tyeam’s) little secret for a bit longer. Kat and Tyeam exchanged nervous glances as Jelly entered the room. “Kat, your room looks like a mess! You told me you were going to clean it up,” Jelly said, sidestepping a pile of clothes on the floor. “I will, later,” Kat promised, though knowing how much of a procrastinator she was, who could be sure when “later” would be. “Turn off the computer and let’s go,” Jelly ordered. “I was just showing Tyeam the website you made for the reunion,” Kat said, pulling up the tab she’d switched to. Jelly chuckled as she went through old pictures. They really did have to leave but it couldn’t hurt to walk down memory lane for a little bit longer. “Oh look, there’s Spongetron. I always knew she’d make it big. And look at your mom!” She pointed at a photo of her wearing a John Lennon shirt and a gelled-up hairdo—it was no wonder everyone called her Jelly. “How’s that for a look. Could I be any cooler?” “Sure, mom,” Kat lied. “Now seriously, let’s get a move on. I need some help bringing these boxes to the reunion.” Jelly left the room, sending the girls a meaningful look. Kat’s computer dinged, indicating a new e-mail. Her heart fluttered at the thought of Allen talking to her again, even though she hadn’t had the opportunity to reply to his last message. “Katniss Jelson! Get your butt down here now!” Jelly shouted. Kat gulped, quickly turning off her computer before leaving the room with Tyeam. Despite the silly nickname, Jelly could be pretty intimidating and strict when she wanted to be. ~ ~ ~ “I can’t believe this is gonna be our school next year,” Tyeam said, marveling at the huge halls of SBCgrassi. Back when Jelly was a student, this was solely a high school, but this year SBCgrassi High School and SBCgrassi Middle were combining to form SBCgrassi Community School. “I’m kinda nervous.” “I’m not,” said CD CB. “I’m gonna school SBCgrassi.” Kat rolled her eyes. “Sure you are.” CD could be pretty corny with his various jokes and overly confident attitude. Despite that, though, Kat and Tyeam had been friends with him since elementary school and wouldn’t have it any other way. “Thanks again girls and CD for the help,” Jelly said. “And Kat, remember about your room later…” “Yes mom,” Kat replied. She walked away with Tyeam, rolling her eyes. “She’s such a nag sometimes. Rushed me out so fast I didn’t even get to see if that was Allen sending me another message.” “That sucks,” Tyeam agreed. “But at least you can read it later. I’m so jealous that you have a cute boy who sends you letters.” Kat laughed. “Tyeam, Jonathan Brugh is a famous actor, or whatever. He probably doesn’t even know I exist either.” “Thanks, that makes me feel so much better,” Tyeam deadpanned. “…Anyway, Allen e-mailed me last night, too,” Kat said. “He told me that I got over 5,000 names on my petition to save the rocket raccoons, and he even tweeted it to Chris Pratt, Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth to spread awareness. And he told me thanks for my amazing idea.” “Wow, that’s awesome!” Tyeam gasped. “I know, right? The petition was my idea but Allen did the work. He’s so dedicated to the cause, not to mention he got 3 of the 4 major Chrises involved,” Kat said, swooning. “He’s the one who’s amazing.” “Too bad he lives a few towns away,” said Tyeam. Meanwhile, CD looked like he was going to collapse under the weight of the boxes he was holding. “Girls? Help!” Kat and Tyeam rushed over to help CD. Kat bent to the ground and picked up a photo of some guys dressed in 2007-era, punkish fashions. They looked like they were in a band. “People dressed so weird back then,” she muttered. ~ ~ ~ Across town, another SBCgrassi reunion of starts was occurring. Whoey Jeremiah was at his car dealership, Jeremiah Motors, trying to sell a car to his old classmate, Homie Stuck. “This car is the coolest car,” Whoey was telling Homie. “It’s sleek and super efficient, like the Batmobile.” Homie snorted, not terribly impressed with Whoey’s fanboying. “I just want a decent, sizable car that’s gonna move me to New Mexico, okay?” “Just trust me, mang. Why don’t we take it out for a drive? We can go by SBCgrassi and by the end you’ll be begging me for this car lel,” said Whoey. “All right, you got a deal,” Homie conceded. She gasped when she saw a little boy around five years old walking over to her and Whoey. “Oh my gosh, is this teenjangelo? He’s so precious,” Homie squealed. “Hey cutie.” “Go say ‘hi’ to Homie,” Whoey prodded his son. Teenjangelo shyly said hello. “I can’t believe he’ll be starting kindergarten next week. It’s good for him to meet new people.” “Speaking of meeting people…are you coming to the reunion? You never confirmed,” Homie said, looking at Whoey pointedly. Whoey sighed. His wife, Mothra, had died a year ago and to say he wasn’t handling things well would be an understatement. Aside from work and taking care of Teenjangelo, he just didn’t have a desire to go out and socialize with people like he used to. “I know, Homie, I know.” “I’m sorry about Mothra, but it’s been a year. I think she’d want you to move on and start becoming close to people again,” Homie told Whoey. “And I’m sure the old gang misses you a lot.” Whoey grew flustered, tightly wringing his hands together as he looked away from Homie. “Uh, I—I’ll go get the keys and we can take this for a test drive, okay? C’mon Teenjangelo. We’re gonna sell Homie a new car. Yeah.” Homie crossed her arms and stared after Whoey as he and Teenjangelo disappeared into the dealership. This wasn’t going to be easy, but she was determined to get Whoey to that reunion. Maybe he wouldn’t be his old, silly self again but he needed to be around friends more than ever right now. ~ ~ ~ Kat awkwardly shifted the boxes in her hands as she looked up at the tall teacher standing in front of her. “You’re Mr. Clapson, right?” “That’s me. And you must be Katniss. Wow. Last time I saw you, you were just a baby. And wow, it’s amazing that Jelly found all this stuff,” Clappy said. Tyeam looked confusedly at Kat. “Jelly?” Kat rolled her eyes. “It’s my mom’s nickname, don’t ask.” “Anyway, thanks a lot guys. Now enjoy your last few days of freedom before school starts,” Clappy instructed. The kids said their goodbyes as they ran out of the room. “Hey, no running, guys! No—okay, don’t listen to me, that’s fine.” Kat stopped running when she saw the media immersion lab and marveled at what was inside. “Holy crap, look at all the computers!” CD and Tyeam followed Kat into the room. “Ooh, are you gonna e-mail your boyfriend Allen in here? ‘Ooh Allen, you’re, like, my soulmate. Please marry me!’” CD teased. Kat scowled, turning bright red. “Shut up, CD!” She punched CD in the arm, smirking when he let out a cry of pain. Served him right. Mr. Terminitch, the SBCgrassi principal, was giving a tour of the school to a new student, JjsThekid. “Here’s the media immersion lab. I don’t exactly know how the hell it works but it has Mac computers and that’s what the kids are into, right? I’m joking. But it does have high-speed internet and fantastic Wi-fi access.” JCM ruffled his son, Jjs’s head. “They didn’t have this stuff at your old school, Jjs. Hell, I could probably teach coding better than the technology teachers there.” CD perked up, excited to see another friend at school. “Jjs?” Jjs broke away from the “riveting” conversation that Mr. Terminitch and JCM were having about media immersion. “CD?” CD and Jjs met in the center of the hallway, doing a ridiculously complicated handshake. “Meatball meatball spaghetti underneath. Ravioli ravioli Great Barrier Reef!” they shouted in unison. “Dude, what are you doing here?” CD asked Jjs. To the girls, he explained, “This is Jjs. I know him from summer camp at SBU.” Mr. Terminitch coughed. “You boys can catch up. Your dad and I will finish filling out these forms in my office.” He and JCM walked off. “My dad moved in with his girlfriend and this was the closest school,” Jjs explained. “I’m probably gonna walk home now but I’ll see you guys at school. Nice to meet you.” Once Jjs walked away, Kat grew a devious look on her face. “The coast is clear. I’m gonna go check my e-mail. C’mon, Tyeam. CD, stand guard at the door.” “Girls are weird,” Jjs said, shaking his head as Kat and Tyeam went inside. CD laughed. “Tell me about it.” ~ ~ ~ Spongetron was pleading with her fiancé, Big Meaty Claws, over the phone as she climbed out of a limo. “BMC, this weekend is really important to me. It’s my 10 year reunion! I know you’re busy but it’s just one weekend. Let me show you off—I mean, show us off to everyone. Please? Oh, 5:00 is perfect, thanks. Love you babe.” She entered Degrassi and was delighted to see her old friend, Clappy. “Clappy! Oh man, its so good to see you.” Clappy dropped the boxes he was carrying and gave Spongetron a hug. “Likewise, Tron. It’s so great to see you.” “I can’t believe you’re a teacher here now,” said Spongetron. “And I can’t believe you’re a famous journalist who gets to interview bands and travel the world,” said Clappy. Spongetron dug through one of the boxes until she found a blue shirt with the name “Doctor Strange” emblazoned across the front. “Oh shit, remember that band you were in? I think you guys made one good song.” Clappy scoffed. “Hey, we were awesome. Hopefully Elastic and Whoey show up at the reunion. It would be awesome to get the band back together again.” ~ ~ ~ “Why can’t you sell nice cars like that?” Homie joked, pointing to a limo parked outside SBCgrassi. Whoey rolled his eyes good-naturedly at Homie and he, Homie, and Teenjangelo headed inside the school. Whoey stopped in his tracks when he saw…her. Spongetron. The two of them certainly had a lot of history together, ever since SBCgrassi Middle School. Whoey felt like he was dreaming, or perhaps in a nightmare instead. Seeing Spongetron reopened some old memories and he wasn’t sure how to feel about that. ~ ~ ~ “Chill out, Tyeam. If we get caught I’ll say I made you come in here,” Kat promised, though she herself needed to chill since she was bursting with nervousness and excitement at the same time. “What did he say?” Tyeam asked. “Allen’s coming here. And he wants to meet me. Tomorrow,” Kat said, her eyes growing wide. ~ ~ ~ Spongetron, Homie, Whoey, and Clappy were standing near the school entrance, catching up. Spongetron was glowing and smiled serenely as she played with her engagement ring. “So…congrats on getting married, Tron,” Whoey said. “When’s the big day?” Homie asked. “We haven’t narrowed it down yet but sometime next year, maybe,” she said. “But you’re all invited.” “So when do we get to meet the lucky guy?” Clappy asked. “This afternoon. BMC is dying to meet you guys,” Spongetron said. “He’s a director in LA and he’s working on a film adaptation of Pickle and Peanut. Cool, right?” “I always knew you’d meet the perfect guy for you,” Whoey said. “Um, yeah,” Spongetron said, still feeling a tiny bit of awkwardness around Whoey. “It’s too bad you’re not coming to the reunion, but at least go out and have drinks with us tonight.” Whoey looked down at his hands. “Uh, I don’t—” “He’d love to go,” Homie interrupted. “We’ll see ya there.” Spongetron grinned. “Great! See you guys later.” She walked off and then was taken away in the limo. Whoey glared at Homie but she simply smirked. “You’ll thank me for this later.” ~ ~ ~ Kat and Tyeam were hanging out by the playground. For as much as Kat tried to prove to her mom and herself that she was becoming more mature, she couldn’t feel more like a little kid than she did right now. “I want to meet him, but I told him I was in high school,” Kat said. “What am I gonna do?” “Technically, you’re almost in high school,” said Tyeam. “You have to meet Allen though. It’s fate!” “Who’s Allen?” Jjs asked. “Some creepy dude Kat met online. I bet he’s some 40-year-old freak who lives in his mom’s basement,” CD snidely remarked. Kat shot CD a dirty look. What did he know? Allen was a sweet, lovely guy. CD was probably just jealous. “I don’t know about this,” Jjs said, sounding uneasy. “It could be dangerous to meet a stranger you only know from online.” “He’s not a stranger! He e-mailed me a photo,” Kat jumped to Allen’s defense. “And I’ve known him for a long time. I trust Allen.” “It’s cool, guys. Allen is 16 and he’s coming here on a school trip,” Tyeam tried to assure the boys. CD wasn’t convinced. “But it’s summer.” “He organized it in spring. Geez, stop making this into something it’s not,” Kat snapped, crossing her arms. ~ ~ ~ Spongetron and Jelly were in Kat’s room, talking and laughing. Spongetron was telling Jelly about how she picked out the engagement ring because Big Meaty Claws was busy with production stuff for his movie. Jelly just liked how he gave Spongetron his credit card to “go crazy” with. Kat came into the room and went pale when she saw her mom and Spongetron on the computer. “What are you doing on my computer?” she demanded. “Excuse me, it’s our computer,” Jelly corrected. “And let’s be nice in front of our guest, hmm?” “Oh, hey. You’re Spongetron Roboyan…and I can’t believe you’re in my messy room,” Kat said, feeling starstruck even though she was totally embarrassed now. “No worries. It’s just awesome to see you all grown up,” Spongetron said. “She wishes she was all grown up,” Jelly replied. “So, Kat, were you waiting for your boyfriend to e-mail you back?” “You read my e-mail! Don’t you know what privacy is?” Kat whined. “Relax,” Jelly said. “I just know when my daughter is getting interested in boys, that’s all.” Jelly and Spongetron left the room and Kat let out a huge sigh of relief. ~ ~ ~ “CD is being so annoying about me meeting Allen,” Kat complained later on. She and Tyeam were hanging out on her bed, eating chips. “He’s just concerned about you,” Tyeam said. “And maybe he and Toby are right. This could be dangerous…” “I’m almost thirteen, I can take care of myself,” replied Kat. “Besides, we’ll meet in a public place.” “I’m just saying, maybe you can talk to your mom about this,” Tyeam tried to reason with Kat. “She’s cool. She’ll understand.” Kat frowned. “She’s not that cool.” ~ ~ ~ Later that night, the old SBCgrassi gang had met up for drinks. While Big Meaty Claws chattered away on his phone about work stuff, the others played more catch up. Everyone marveled over Homie getting degrees in sociology and anthropology, but she played off her accomplishments, being demure. “Hey, look, guys, it’s Whoey!” Homie exclaimed, her attention grabbed by a local commercial on TV. Whoey was parading around in a spandex suit, promising “super deals” at Jeremiah Motors. Nobody was surprised that Whoey still harbored a love for superheroes even as an adult. “Wow dude, this is…really something,” Clappy replied, laughing. “Hey man, I wanted a commercial and so I made one,” Whoey replied. “Right on, but maybe next time get a real actor. It’s best for business, trust me. And the commercial could definitely be 100% danker,” said Big Meaty Claws. His phone went off again. “Hello? No, why don’t you stop being incompetent. Fix it!” “Thanks, BMC,” Whoey flatly responded. “I liked it!” said Homie. “It’s classic, it’s funny…it’s totally Whoey!” “BMC, you should’ve seen Whoey in high school. He was such a clown and always wanted to make people laugh like this. It’s nice that after everything that he’s still the same old Who,” Spongetron said. “But I have changed. And so have you. Excuse me.” Whoey sharply got up from the table and went to the bar. Clappy followed him. “What’s going on, dude?” Clappy asked as the two sipped on drinks. “Nothing. This was a dumb idea. I’m going home,” said Whoey. “Come on, Whoey. We were having such a good time,” said Clappy. “Oh just leave me alone, Claps,” Whoey grumbled. “I’m your friend, man. I’m just concerned about you. You can’t keep shutting people out of your life like this,” Clappy said. “I’m tired of people feeling sorry for me. That’s why I’m not going to the reunion.” Whoey gulped down the rest of his drink. “So this isn’t about Spongetron?” Clappy asked. “No, it’s not! I don’t like her stupid boyfriend, or fiancé, or whatever. But I’m just tired of her feeling sorry for me, like I said.” Clappy shook his head. “It’s your decision, dude. But nobody is ‘feeling sorry’ for you. We care. But if you want to sit around and mope, be my guest.” He finished his drink and went back to the table, leaving Whoey alone. ~ ~ ~ Kat was sleeping but got woken up by Homie, Jelly and Spongetron’s giggling in the living room. “Sorry for waking you up, Kat,” Jelly apologized. “I was just having some bubbly with the girls.” “How’s it going, Kat?” Spongetron asked. “Can I ask you something, Spongetron?” Kat asked timidly. “Go for it,” Spongetorn responded. The two ladies headed into the kitchen to talk privately. “Let me guess, is this about your boyfriend.” Kat nodded. “My friends don’t think I should be with him. But we get along so well. It’s like he totally gets me.” “Well, you gotta go for it sometimes, even if your friends don’t think it’s right,” said Spongetron. “Just take a chance!” “Well, I’m going back to bed. Night, everyone,” Kat said. The ladies said their goodnights and Kat went back into her room. “She’s so young,” Spongetron sighed. “Oh, to be 12 years old again!” “I’m more jealous of you, bride-to-be,” said Homie. “You’re so lucky. No more unfortunate blind dates with guys.” Spongetron chuckled. “Yeah, I’m set for life. Big Meaty Claws is pretty great.” ~ ~ ~ Kat felt emboldened by Spongetron’s words. She booted up her computer, quickly typing up an e-mail to Allen saying how she’d love to meet him. She sent it without even a second thought. “Sometimes you just gotta go for it,” Kat repeated, smiling to herself.
