And In Entertainment News...

Whenever I do any Sunday updates, you can always expect me to talk about the weekend domestic box office since Sundays are a slow day in terms of movie news.

While weekend estimates are not finalized just yet, it is shaping out to be the first non-holiday weekend EVER to have four 20+ million openings.

-The Vow is expected to finish in first place with a shocking 41 million. I guess its true that women love the concept of soulmates being kept apart by fate. Especially when they star beautiful people like Rachel McAdams and Channing "Random Pauses as He's Trying To Remember His Lines" Tatum.

-Safe House comes in second, also overperforming projections with 39 million. I guess I am not the only one who believes that Denzel Washington is never in a bad movie. This will be the second biggest opening of his career as everyone must have been excited as I am to see Denzel play the anti-hero. I for one, can't wait to see this movie.

-George Luca's latest attempt at cash grabbing (hey, it worked on me) Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D is in a fight for third with Journey 3D (more on that in the next dash), but will probably beat it out depending on the family movie factor. Currently estimated to make 22 million, the re-release strategy worked as the Star Wars fanboys (me) rushed out to see how the alleged "worst movie" of the franchise looked in the third dimension. With this opening weekend, I wouldn't be surprised to see Attack of the Clones (which in my opinion, is the worst of the franchise) re-released in 3D sooner rather than later.

-Journey 2 The Mysterious Island will probably finish in fourth with 21 million based off estimates, but it wouldn't surprise me if it finished in third once the actual numbers come out on Monday night. Either way, this might make the Journey movies the second biggest WTF franchise in my books (first belongs to Alvin and the Chipmunks). I don't know how a concept that was suppose to be a theme park attraction keeps overperforming box office estimates. I don't think this will make 100 million like the first one, but this will probably have Warner Brothers heavily considering a third movie. Especially since the movie is already a hit overseas and will definitely beat its budget.

-Last weekends overperformers Chronicle and The Woman In Black are neck and neck for fifth place. Daniel Radcliffe's horror movie will inch out the found footage film for fifth place with 10.5 million, while the latter finishes with 10.4. Meanwhile, everything else in the Top 10 is estimated to make less than 5 million (The Grey, Big Miracle, The Descendants, One For The Money).

And in other news...get it? Cuz that's the name of the title...

-The producer of the remake of Sparkle, comes out August 2012, says that Whitney Houston is brilliant in her final screen performance.

-In the remake that Elastic has been keeping his close eyes on, The Evil Dead, more casting announcements have been made. Jane Levy (ABC's Suburgatory), Shiloh Hernandez (The Wolf in Red Riding Hood), and Lou Taylor Pucci (Thumbsucker) have been casted as the three friends of Mike (Lily Collins).

-Seth Grahame-Smith is in talks with Michael Keaton to discuss the long rumored sequel to the 1988 hit film Beetlejuice.

-In promotion of the Linda Lovelace biopic, Amanda Seyfried (in character) is on a parody poster in one of the pornstar's most recognizable films "Deep Throat"

see-amanda-seyfried-as-linda-lovelace-on-vintage-deep-throat-poster-79765-470-75.jpg

Oh vintage goodness.

Hopefully I will have more to report on in my next post.

If I had a dollar for each female I know that went to see The Vow, I'd be a somewhat wealthy man.
Same here. I seriously don't get what girls see in Channing Tatum. He can't act his way out of a paper bag. Now if it was Adam Scott...

Inorite?! I srsly don't get how some of them find Tatum attractive, either. It baffles me, but if it was (especially during his BMW days) Adam Scott...

A Linda Lovelace biopic? Haha, WHEN AND WHERE.
Cuming in 2012

-Turns out my estimates I got for Journey 2 were off. It actually estimated 27 million. So it actually outgrossed the original's opening weekend and has a chance to possibly make more depending on how well it holds up. Damn you Dwayne and your dancing pecs.

-Occasionally, I will share trailers in here if they are interesting enough. This teaser I find interesting enough to share with you all. The teaser for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter....where Johnny Cash is the trailer's narrator and Abe Lincoln takes down the undead and trees with only one swing of his ax:

-2010 unintentional B-Movie "Legion" is being turned into a television series for SyFy. For the many of you who did not see this movie, the plot was actually semi-intriguing. The movie was just poorly executed. God has decided to smite humanity and sends his legions of angels down upon us. It’s then up to a rogue angel to help a group of strangers make their last stand. It stars Dennis Quaid, Paul Bettany, and Tyrese Gibson. It is unknown if any of the actors will be returning for the tv series, but director Scott Stewart is executive producing.

-The Artist once again swept nearly every category it was nominated in at an award show. This time, it was at the BAFTA's. I am all but certain that this movie will end up being Best Picture at the Oscars. However, it is surprising that compared to the other 8 nominees for Best Picture, The Artist ranks 8th in terms of box office gross. Clearly, this is the best movie that no one is watching.

-Ben Stiller's new movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty keeps adding more comedic talent. He is already attached to direct and star along with Patton Oswalt. Now the movie has added Kristen Wiig and OMJ's favorite Adam Scott.

-As a woman with many projects that she is attached to, Angelina Jolie has decided that her next project will be a Disney reboot. The long rumored Maleficent will be the untold story of the evil queen from Sleeping Beauty. So pretty much another dark take on a Disney classic.

-In even more Angelina Jolie news, she wants to make a movie focusing on conflict in Afghanistan. As much as I find Angelina Jolie attractive, she is way too outspoken on world dilemmas. She is so intent on inflating her massive ego and getting involved with things she shouldn't be involved with, just to try and make herself seem like a good person, when she usually never follows through with her "plans". I could rant on Angelina Jolie the person, but I think I will save that for her eventual Actress thread.

-Mattel has finally announced the much anticipated release of the Hoverboard, a futuristic hovering skateboard that Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) used in the Back to the Future sequels. They should be released at some point before Christmas 2012, just in time for the holidays.

-For those of you who weren't aware or saw one of my news updates a couple posts ago, I briefly mentioned the 2013 release date for a Phineas and Ferb animated/live action movie. Rumor has it that the beginning and the end of the film will be animated and the middle will include live action versions of the characters. Disney wants to have a popular actor, namely Jim Carrey, to play live action Doofenshmirtz in order to get older audiences more interested. In case Disney hasn't realized by now, Jim Carrey hasn't been funny since 2003 (Bruce Almighty) so good luck with that.

And finally! Hover boards before 2015, sounds too good to be true. Hell, if they come out with a working Pitbull, that shit's mine. I need the POWUHR.
Hell I might even get myself a hover board so I can feel like Marty McFly. :P

Today's news updates are short and sweet since I have to leave for work in a bit. I'll write a longer one tomorrow.

-Well the news we all have been dreading is true. Michael Bay will return to the Transfomers franchise as director of the fourth one. Luckily, it won't come out until 2014 since he is doing another project first. Maybe that will give the screenwriters enough time to write a cohesive script?

-In more Michael Bay news, this "other project" is the movie Pain & Gain, which comes out in 2013. The plot is a pair of bodybuilders in Florida get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong. Starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. He has been working on this project for about three years, so there might be a chance that there is a cohesive script.

-Sly Stallone will start work on Rambo 5 as soon as he is complete with The Expendables 2. Yay?

-Guillermo Del Toro will direct a live action version of "Beauty and the Beast" with Emma Watson. Hell yes!

-Kermit the Frog has announced that there will be a sequel to The Muppets. Cool, I wonder what movie studio Kermit the Frog is the head of? None the less, I am actually excited for this.

-Almost everyone from the original Ghostbusters crew is on board for a third one....except Bill Murray. Now, Dan Aykroyd wants Bill Murray's role to be recasted. If this seriously does happen, I will have no faith in this movie.

Here is to hopefully more news than last time:

-Peter Berg is working on a film based on the television series Friday Night Lights. Yes, I am aware that there was the movie Friday Night Lights, which inspired the television series, but this new Friday Night Lights movie will involve the characters from the television series. The biggest hurdle will be the scheduling which they are waiting for the availability for the main cast (Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Taylor Kitsch, etc.). Hope that helps with the confusion.

-NBC has ordered 13 episodes of a television series based off the movie Hannibal. No one knows who will be playing the title character, but I'm gonna stop there before I head into 70s territory for "And in other news" television.

-Battle: Los Angeles/Wrath of the Titans director Jonathan Liebesman is in talks to direct the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. Based off Liebesman's track record, expect a hell of a lot of special effects, but a poor script. He is seriously transforming into Michael Bay Jr.

-Brian Taylor (co-director of Crank and the new Ghost Rider movie) will be making a film adaptation of the video game franchise "Twisted Metal". Sounds like Death Race to me, minus the racing. As long as they preserve Sweet Tooth, then I think this could be cheesy fun.

-"John Carter" director Andrew Stanton is outlining the sequels to the film and is willing to come back to direct them if they are made. No pressure or anything movie-goers, but Andrew Stanton seems to be more excited about the film than everyone else is.

-A sequel to Bad Santa is going to start filming this fall. I sure hope this movie isn't 10 years too late.

-A hell of a lot more sequels are in the developmental stages. Nothing too major has been been announced and some of these have been long rumored. Instead of taking time to develop separate news reports about them, I'm just gonna bunch them together. These sequels are: Real Steel 2, Ghost Rider 3, Taken 2, The Adventures of Tintin 2, and Waiting To Exhale 2. The most interesting is Waiting To Exhale, since Whitney Houston's passing. If they move forth with an actual sequel, something tells me this will be in poor taste.

-Last week, it was Alfred Hitchcock's "Rebecca" that was being remade. This week, it is "Suspicion" with Veena Hud, head writer of AMC tv show "The Killing". Next week, it will probably be "North By Northwest" with "The Birds" the following week.

-M Night Shyamalan's next film After Earth, which will star Will and Jaden Smith. The plot is a father and son crash land on Earth, one thousand years after it has been abandoned by mankind. The father is injured in the crash, and it is up to his son to find aid. An image has already been leaked from principal filming. Here it is below.

will-and-jaden-smith-on-set-of-after-earth-in-costa-rica.jpg

Who would have thought that people 1000 years into the future dress in modern day Nike's, gym shorts, skinny jeans, and button down shirts. The future sure sounds a lot like the present. Maybe that is the Shyamalan twist for the film?

It was a slow news day in terms of cinema news yesterday, thus I added the bit below to take some space.

-The Kid's Choice Awards are about six weeks away and we are still awaiting nominees for the categories. People.com, however, leaked the nominees for Favorite Movie Actress in an article today. The nominees are:

-Amy Adams (The Muppets)

-Sofia Vergara (The Smurfs)

-Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I)

-Emma Watson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II)

A couple thoughts. I thought that Amy Adams was one of the best parts about The Muppets, with the only complaint being that she should have gotten more screen time. However, I don't blame them since it is a movie about The Muppets, not the actors. Emma Watson would probably be in my Fave Five, based of elegance alone, however I feel that her nomination was only filler. I can't think of a single time she has been nominated for Harry Potter in the past, so why did they wait until now to nominate her? Now we get to the bashing. While I do love Modern Family, my least favorite actor on the show has to be Sofia Vergara. I find her incredibly attractive, but when it comes to acting, she just can't. Case in point The Smurfs. Never saw the movie, but I don't need to watch to realize that the movie was critically panned, but the young people loved it. I can't imagine what kind of acting Sofia did, but I think that Jayma Mays probably did better. As for Kristen Stewart, what more can I say. She is attractive, but the Twilight movies have never been about acting. It's just about good looking people and drama. No emotions were displayed whatsoever. Thus, I think the Twi-hards will probably vote Kristen Stewart to victory.

-Now onto the actual cinema news

-Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts are set to star together in an adaptation of the play August: Osage County. The two are obviously going to be mother-daughter respectively. While I still find Meryl Streep to be one of, if not the best, actresses working today, what exactly has Julia Roberts done in about the past ten years to still be worthy of being considered one of the best? While I get that she is a mother now and wants to spend more time with her family, her over-hyped roles that she did end up taking were in clunkers: Love Wedding Marriage (direct to DVD), Valentine's Day, Duplicity, The Ant Bully, Larry Crowne, Charlie Wilson's War (arguable), and Ocean's Twelve. Ouch.

-Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Shia LaBeouf, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley are all not coming back for the fourth Transformers movie. And not a single fuck was given that day.

-Jennifer Aniston and Dennis Quaid are now on board for Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown prequel "Switch".

-The graphic novel "I Killed Adolf Hitler" will now be made into a feature film. The graphic novel is about an assassin who is sent back in time to destroy the Fuhrer, but things go very, very wrong as Hitler manages to come forward in time, leaving the assassin to deal with his predicament. Sounds interesting.

-I understand why the ‘found footage’ approach to making low-budget films might be getting tiring to some audiences, but let’s get optimistic and hope that this new one might be a bit different from others. Rob Letterman, who co-wrote and directed the animated films Shark Tale and Monsters vs Aliens before directing the live-action Gulliver’s Travels with Jack Black…where was I? Oh, right. Optimism! Letterman is now set to make a found footage film called The Paranormalists, since clearly everything in horror these days is paranormal. It involves a haunted house (surprise) and a couple of foolhardy investigators (shocked) out to prove that there is nothing to fear from the joint (of course not).

-In odd casting news, Tony Scott, the lesser Scott, has casted Vince Vaughn to star in drug cartel-busting action thriller "Lucky Strike". Join us as Vince Vaughn fast talks his way out of predicament after predicament.

-The next Fast and Furious film is set to start filming this May for a Memorial Day 2013 release. I wonder what amazing title they will come up with this time? Fast Six? Furious Six? Fast Cars and Freedom, since it's being released on a patriotic holiday?

-One of the more intriguing movies to be released this year is the new Wachowski Brothers film "Cloud Atlas".

Let’s run through the basics again, for those who are just joining in: One film. Two parallel film units with three directors (the other being Tom Tykwer) shooting six interconnected stories. Most of the cast plays multiple roles, sometimes switching genders and races in tales that range from classic adventure to detective thriller to dystopian sci-fi.

The cast includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant and Bae Doona.

Now Hugh Grant is speaking about his part in the movie in an article in the movie "Empire". Grant has six parts in the film and does a lot of killing and raping. He wears an awful lot of prosthetic make up, too. So we probably won’t know who he is in the film. As far as specific roles go in the six stories, Grant only mentions that he played “a cannibal, about 2000 years in the future,” in one of them.

I can't wait for this movie!

-The Kids Choice Awards nominees are up for the movie categories, but instead of analyzing them like yesterday, I'll just link you to the topic.

http://www.sbcforums.com/forums/showthread.php?4319-KCA-s-2012

-Jamie Blackley has joined the 300 prequel "300: Battle of Artemisia". I'm not even going to pretend to act like I know who he is. All I know was that while historically inaccurate, 300 was a great popcorn movie. I was shaky about a sequel, but with Eva Green, who is beautiful, as Artemisia, I might go see the sequel.

-Gael Garcia Bernal is going to play a futuristic Zorro in the next movie "Zorro Reborn". I just hope by futuristic, they don't mean Zorro is a robot because that would cater to Gael's talents.

-MGM is remaking Valley Girl...as an 80's style musical. Oh dear god, this could be unintentionally hilarious if done wrong...which I expect. If done right though, it couldn't be too bad. It's a win-win situation for me.

-/Film has posted a redband trailer to Friends with Kids. OMJ, I highly suggest you watch this since one of the stars is Adam Scott.

http://www.slashfilm.com/friends-kids-redband-trailer/

-Seth Rogen doesn't know if Pineapple Express 2 will happen. I hope it doesn't because the original was so disappointing.

-Lee Daniels, who hasn't made a movie since Precious, is rounding up a nice cast for his next movie "The Butler". Hugh Jackman, Mila Kunis (<3), John Cusack, David Oyelowo, and making her return to movies...Oprah Winfrey.

-Cogan's Trade finally got a release date: September 21, 2012. For those who don't know what it is about, it is about a mob enforcer (Brad Pitt) who is hunting down a couple junkies (Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn). Also starring James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, Sam Shepard, and Richard Jenkins.

-While Cogan's got a release date, another movie has been pushed back all the way to the first weekend in January (usually one of the slowest weekends in Hollywood in terms of movies). What movie is this? Scary Movie 5. David Zucker is returning as director and the same guys who wrote the previous two are returning as well. Offers have been made for Anthony Anderson, Regina Hall, and Anna Faris (you seriously can do so much better than the crap you choose) to return and Chelan Simmons (Final Destination 3) has signed on to join the cast. Movies being parodied are rumored to be the Final Destination series, the Paranormal Activity series, and the Child's Play series.
