This is probably what happens in Goo Lagoon, same goes for sea trenches. But then again, Spongebob and Patrick did manage to survive in Rock Bottom so who knows. In my headcanon, I believe that non-sapient fish ("animal" fish) still exist and is the primary source of meat in Bikini Bottom, besides clams and manatees (manatees appears in Blackened Sponge and are shown to behave like cows).
