Steven Herburt... perhaps one of Canada's wost serial killers of all time. His story began in 1985 of April, he was 28 at the time, he owned a small farm house on the east side of Vancouver, he didn't have any friends, and he didn't have any enemies.

Steven Herburt had interest in teenagers, when he was 20, he was charged for molesting 4 teenagers all between the ages of 14 to 16.

Inspector John Dillion (VHT: Vancouver Homicide Team): He was definitely a madman, killing is what he lived for, killing was his passion, and he felt absolutely no remorse for the things he had done.

VICTIMS

April 11, 1985 - Kyle Martin was a 15 year old teenager, he was very popular, and was remembered as a kind and honest person. In April 11, 1985 he went missing, his parents called the Vancouver Police, 3 days after his disappearance they found his body on a soccer field, 20 minutes from his home.

Police were able to find shoe prints, and take photographs of it. Forensic Science was able to find DNA evidence, proving that the victim was sexually assaulted, and was strangled by the neck.

April 24, 1985 - Rick Marshall a 13 year old teenager was reported missing when he didn't arrive home from school, Police found his body near the back of the church.

Police were able to confirm that both murders were connected, because the similarities between both crime scenes.

May 17, 1985 - Jessica Morgan a 17 year old teenager was reported missing, her body was found near a small creek.

The crime scene was similar to the previous ones, DNA was collected from the body, however Police notice something different... they found bruising on the body, they were faint, but were still visible, she was beaten with a hammer, and then strangled.

November 4, 1985 - Rachel Dilson was a 17 year old teenager, she had a part time job as a Librarian. On Saturday evening when she failed to arrive home, her parents call the Police and is reported missing. Her body was not found... until December 19, 1985 when two hitchhikers find skeletal remains under a giant tree branch, the hitchhikers call Police, who arrive on scene, after a week of tests, the body is identified as Rachel Dilson.

Police were not able to find many clues related to the crime, however what they did find were strings of fabric.

EXTRA DETAILS

2 weeks after Police found the body of Rachel Dilson, they received a taunting letter from the killer himself.

"I am the one who killed Rachel Dilson, I am also the one who killed those 3 teenagers back in Spring, and I will continue to kill, and you will never catch me."

The letter was handwritten, however Police were not able to retrieve any saliva samples, or fingerprints.

7 years pass, and no crime takes place, however the case of the 4 murdered teenagers remains open, and is still under investigation.

July 29, 1992 - Samantha Davidson a 17 year old teenager was reported missing, and her body was found the day after at a parking lot.

She was strangled, Stabbed once in the hip, and Sexually Assaulted.

Police however did not suspect the murder was similar to the ones back 7 years ago, however after carefully analyzing the crime scene and looking through the previous murder reports, Police believed it was a possibility.

THE SUSPECT

A few days later a woman enters the Vancouver Police Department, she was frustrated, and scared. She told the Police that she believed that her husband was responsible for killing Samantha Davidson, his name was Steven Herburt.

The woman tells police that her husband came home late than usual the night Samantha Davidson was murdered, she also found a knife with blood on it, which she believed he used to stab Samantha Davidson.

Police did not confront Steven Herburt, but instead decided to secretly gather evidence related to the crime.

EVIDENCE

1. Steven Herburt was a heavy smoker, he would usually smoke, and throw his cigarette on the ground, Police took a used cigarette from the ground, to find DNA evidence... it was a match, but not only to Samantha Davidson's murder, but to Kyle Martin's and Jessica Morgan's as well.

2. The Knife with blood on it, belonged to Samantha Davidson.

3. His old shoes had similar print to the one found at Kyle Martin's crime scene.

4. His handwriting was very similar to the taunting letter they received from an anonymous person who claimed to have killed 4 teenagers in 1985 7 years ago.

THE ARREST

With these 4 strong evidence, Police confronted Steven Herburt and placed him under arrest.

Forensic Experts began examining his car the next day, where they took fabric samples from the seats, the fabric samples matched the ones found in Rachel Davidson's murder scene.

INTERROGATION

A day after his arrest, Inspector John Dillion interrogates Steven Herburt, these are the actual quotes from the interrogation.

John Dillion: We got your saliva sample from a cigarette you once smoked, and that saliva sample matched the DNA evidence found in Kyle Martin, Jessica Morgan, and Samantha Davidson's crime scenes... now how can that be?

Steven Herburt: No comment.

John Dillion: A knife was found at your house with dry blood on it, the blood belonged to Samantha Davidson... why is that?

Steven Herburt: No comment.

John Dillion: Your handwriting is similar to the one on a taunting letter we received back in 1985, do you think that was just a coincidence?

Steven Herburt: No comment.

John Dillion: A shoe print that was found at Kyle Martin's crime scene, matches the one you used to wear... can you explain?

Steven Herburt: No comment.

John Dillion: Strings of Fabrics in your car match the ones we found in Rachel Dilson's crime scene... why is that?

Steven Herburt: No comment.

John Dillion: According to your criminal record, you molested 4 teenagers, in 1977... is that true?

Steven Herburt: No comment.

John Dillion: Did you kill Kyle Martin on April 11, 1985?

Steven Herburt: No comment.

John Dillion: Did you kill Rick Marshall on April 24, 1985?

Steven Herburt: No comment.

John Dillion: Did you kill Jessica Morgan on May 17, 1985?

Steven Herburt: No comment.

John Dillion: Did you kill Rachel Dilson on November 4, 1985?

Steven Herburt: No comment.

John Dillion: Did you kill Samantha Davidson on July 29, 1992?

Steven Herburt: No comment.

TRIAL

Steven Herburt attended his trial on December, of 1992, he was found guilty of all 5 counts of murder, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison for each murder he has committed, he will not be eligible for parole.

A sense of relief came to the Vancouver community, the nightmare was over, however the sadness and fear of the victims will haunt the family members forever.

Even today Steven Herburt is behind bars...
