PILOT

SCENE ONE

We open on a montage of various shops in downtown Bikini Bottom that have gone out of business. Sad, defeated fish take last looks at their shops and walk away, heads hung. We end on...the Krusty Krab.

Squidward is lounged behind the register, flipping through a magazine. Spongebob comes out of the kitchen and leans against the register. They sigh simultaneously and look around. The Krusty Krab is completely empty.

In his office, Mr. Krabs is looking over his books, crunching the numbers. For what seems like the umpteenth time, it just doesn't add up to enough. He gets up and walks in to the dining room.

SPONGEBOB: What's wrong, Mr. Krabs?

SQUIDWARD: Isn't it obvious, Spongebob? No customers means no money. And no money means a grumpy Krabs.

MR. KRABS: It's not that, boys. (he sighs) I've been over the numbers all night. This recession is killing business all over the ocean, and patty restaurants are no exception.

SQUIDWARD: People don't have the money to eat out all the time.

SPONGEBOB: I'm sure there's something we can do! We can have a sale, or make up some gimmick!

MR. KRABS: (tearing up) Not this time, boy. The truth is...the truth is I can't afford to keep both of you on the staff anymore.

There is a stunned silence.

MR. KRABS: I'll let you know when I make my decision. (walks away) I'm sorry, mateys.

SCENE TWO

Patrick Star wakes up in his home. It's a mess. There are clothes and garbage everywhere. He rolls out of bed, groaning, and pulls open the fridge. There is no food in the fridge. He sighs and pulls his wallet out of his pocket and opens it. It's also empty.

PATRICK: (sighing) I need a job.

SCENE THREE

Spongebob and Squidward are walking home in a silence.

SQUIDWARD: Listen, Spongebob, let's just cut to the chase. One of us is losing his job. Are you crying?

SPONGEBOB: (tearfully) I just can't picture a life without the Krusty Krab.

SQUIDWARD: Don't worry, Sponge. It'll...it'll be okay.

Squidward pauses, the reality sinking in.

SQUIDWARD: I never thought I'd be a cashier at my age. Did I ever tell you I went to college?

SPONGEBOB: You did?!

SQUIDWARD: I studied clarinet. (pause) And now this job is all I have. That's pathetic.

They reach their houses, and stand in silence before parting ways.

SQUIDWARD: I'll see you tomorrow, Sponge.

Squidward disappears inside his house. Spongebob notices Patrick leaving his house.

SPONGEBOB: Where you going, Pat?

PATRICK: To get a job!

SCENE FOUR

Patrick is at THE GOOFY GOOBER, talking to the manager.

MANAGER: Do you have any experience?

PATRICK: I worked at the Krusty Krab once. Fry cook.

MANAGER: (impressed) Really?! Well, we're not looking for cooks...but I've got a bartender job open.

PATRICK: I'll take it. (beat) That is, if you'll have me.

MANAGER: You can start tomorrow.

PATRICK: Thank you!

They shake hands and Patrick leaves, excited.

SCENE FIVE

Spongebob is sitting at home, eating dinner, upset. His phone rings. He picks it up.

SPONGEBOB: Hello?

GRANDMA SQUAREPANTS: Hello?

SPONGEBOB: Oh, Grandma! I'm glad you called. It's been a rough day...

GRANDMA SQUAREPANTS: I can't really talk right now...

Spongebob realizes that his grandmother sounds nervous and is whispering.

SPONGEBOB: What's wrong?

GRANDMA SQUAREPANTS: I think...I think...someone's been following me...

Spongebob hears the door open on the other line and someone walk into his grandmother's house. He listens intently.

MAN'S VOICE: Have you made a decision?

GRANDMA SQUAREPANTS: I thought I told you to stay away from me!

MAN'S VOICE: You have to promise!

GRANDMA SQUAREPANTS: LEAVE ME ALONE!

The line cuts, and all Spongebob hears is a dial tone.

DESERTED

SCENE ONE

(Spongebob hangs up the phone and runs out of his house. He sprints towards Patrick's, and when he arrives, knocks furiously.)

(The rock swings open to reveal Patrick, practicing mixing drinks. Spongebob is taken aback.)

Spongebob: (surprised) What are you doing?

Patrick: I got a job. At the Goody Goober. (He tastes his drink and cringes) Want some?

(Spongebob brushes him off.)

Spongebob: No, Patrick. My grandma just called...she seemed weird.

Patrick: Weird how? Like standard old person weird?

Spongebob: No...she said she thought she was being followed. And then...I'm not sure but I think someone was there with her. Threatening her maybe. (beat) I'm worried, Patrick.

Patrick: I'm sure she's fine.

Spongebob: Just to be sure, will you come with me to check things out?

(Patrick nods and pours the rest of his drink down the drain.)

SCENE TWO

(The Krusty Krab. Squidward is sitting behind the register, and Mr. Krabs walks up.)

Mr. Krabs: Where's Spongebob?

Squidward: What difference does it make? It's not like we have any customers...

(Squidward notices Mr. Krabs stern face.)

Squidward: Sorry.

(Mr. Krabs softens.)

Squidward: It'll be alright, Mr. Krabs. Things will turn around.

Mr. Krabs: I hope so, boy. I hope so.

SCENE THREE

(Spongebob and Patrick walk up to Grandma Squarepants' home. The door is cracked open, and they step through the doorway. There is an eerie silence.)

Spongebob: Grandma?

Patrick: Mrs. Squarepants?

(They spread out, looking for her. Patrick comes across a puddle of water and broken glass on the floor. Meanwhile, Spongebob hears rustling papers in her bedroom, and cracks the door open to find a fish in a trench coat going through some papers.)

Fish: FREEZE! (He points a gun.)

Spongebob: Don't shoot! Don't shoot! I'm just looking for my grandmother.

(Patrick comes racing in. The fish lowers his gun.)

Fish: She's probably already dead.

(Patrick and Spongebob exchange horrified glances.)

SCENE FOUR

(The Krusty Krab. Mr. Krabs comes out of his office.)

Mr. Krabs: Let's go, Squidward.

Squidward: It's only two, sir.

Mr. Krabs: Aye, we're closing up early today.

(They lock up in silence.)

Mr. Krabs: Squidward, we need to talk.

Squidward: (gulps) It's me, isn't it, Mr. Krabs? I'm about to lose my job, aren't I?

Mr. Krabs: Sit down.

(They sit at one of the tables.)

Mr. Krabs: You've been with me from the beginning, Squidward. And you've been a fine worker - even with the complaining. The truth is, I've come to think of you as...as the son I never had.

Squidward: That means a lot to me, Mr. Krabs.

Mr. Krabs: And to be honest, Squidward, you getting fired is just the beginning of the end. I give the Krusty Krab another month, at the most, until we're out of business all the together.

(Squidward notices tears in Mr. Krabs' eyes.)

Mr. Krabs: Do me a favor? Don't say anything to Spongebob yet.

Squidward: Of course, Mr. Krabs.

SCENE FIVE

(Spongebob, Patrick, and the mysterious fish are sitting at the kitchen table.)

Fish: My name is Will Dogfish, Private Investigator. Your grandmother hired me. She thought someone was following her.

Spongebob: Who was it?

Will Dogfish: I don't know. (He lights a cigarette) But we knew things were serious when the blackmail started.

Spongebob: Blackmail?

Will Dogfish: Your grandmother had information. She never told me what it was, but someone wanted it. And they wanted it bad.

(Spongebob processes this. He writes something down and passes it to Will Dogfish.)

Spongebob: This is my phone number if you find anything out. Please call me.

(Will Dogfish nods.)

SCENE SIX

(Squidward is walking home in silence. He gets to the top of the hill and looks back on the Krusty Krab. He sighs and walks inside and sits on his couch.)

Squidward: What now?

(He notices his clarinet, dusty and unused.)

SCENE SEVEN

(Spongebob is feeding Gary and sighs. So much has happened in the last few hours. Suddenly, his phone rings.)

Spongebob: Hello?

Will Dogfish: Spongebob, it's Will Dogfish. You're grandmother is alive.

Spongebob: What? How do you know?

Will Dogfish: We had an agreement. If she ever had to skip town, she was going to send me an envelope with where she was going. Well, when I got home, there was a letter telling me where she was.

Spongebob: And?

CUT TO:

(Outside Patrick's house. Spongebob has a suitcase in hand and knocks on the rock. It swings open and Spongebob rushes in.)

Spongebob: Patrick, we're going to Bikini Top to find my grandmother.

ASHES

SCENE ONE

(Spongebob and Patrick have arrived in Bikini Top.)

Patrick: How are we going to find her? Bikini Top is a big place.

Spongebob: We'll find her Patrick, don't worry. Now, she must have taken the bus here, so I think we should go see if anyone at the bus station has seen her.

(They set off towards the bus station.)

SCENE TWO

(At The Krusty Krab. Mr. Krabs is behind the register, not there's anyone to take orders from. Squidward walks in, and for a moment, Mr. Krabs thinks it's a customer.)

Mr. Krabs: Oh, it's just you.

Squidward: How's it going, Mr. Krabs? Any luck?

Mr. Krabs: I'm afraid not. (he wipes a tear) I'm afraid I'm going to have to close the Krusty Krab. For good.

(Squidward stands in a stunned silence. He can't believe this is happening.)

SCENE THREE

(Spongebob and Patrick are at the bus station, and walk up to the fish in the ticket window.)

TICKET WINDOW: Can I help you?

SPONGEBOB: We're looking for a woman...she probably came in here yesterday. Here's a picture.

TICKET WINDOW: So you're not buying a bus ticket?

SPONGEBOB: Can you just tell me if you've seen this woman?

(The fish in the ticket window reluctantly glances at the picture.)

TICKET WINDOW: Yeah, I saw her. She was really panicky, and paranoid. She made me call her a car to take her to the Shell Hotel.

(Spongebob and Patrick exchange glances. They know where to go next.)

SCENE FOUR

(Sandy Cheeks is watching the news.)

ANCHORFISH: In other news, some local restaurants are feeling the effects of the depression.

ANCHORFISH 2: That's right, cult favorite "The Krusty Krab" is closing after over thirty years of being a Bikini Bottom staple. Founder and manager Eugene Krabs had this to say:

(Cut to Mr. Krabs being interviewed in front of the Krusty Krab.)

MR. KRABS: It's with a heavy heart that I'm closing the Krab. However, to celebrate our long run, we're having a cook out on Saturday night...free. Any and all donations welcome, but not necessary. It would mean a lot for me to see the lot full of old customers.

(Sandy turns off the TV. She's upset that things are changing.)

SCENE FIVE

(Spongebob and Patrick arrive at the Shell Hotel and walk up to the receptionist.)

RECEPTIONIST: Hello, how can I help you today?

SPONGEBOB: I'm looking for Clarissa Squarepants, I believe she's checked in to one of your rooms?

RECEPTIONIST: You don't know?

SPONGEBOB: (sighs) I'm Spongebob Squarepants. She's my grandmother. I'm worried about her.

(The receptionist seems to understand, and checks the records.)

RECEPTIONIST: She is checked in. Let me just call up...

(The receptionist is on the phone. Spongebob and Patrick are impatient.)

RECEPTIONIST: Hello, Mrs. Squarepants. I have your grandson Spongebob in the lobby...alright, yes.

(The receptionist hangs up.)

RECEPTIONIST: She's in room 414.

SPONGEBOB: Thank you.

SCENE SIX

(Squidward is helping Mr. Krabs with the cookout, which is crowded.)

MR. KRABS: Thanks again for helping, Squidward.

SQUIDWARD: Of course. I know how much the Krusty Krab means to you, and how hard this is.

MR. KRABS: I know I always wanted money, more money, but it was honestly about more than that.

SQUIDWARD: I know, Mr. Krabs.

(Sandy walks up.)

SANDY: Wow, this place is packed! Are you sure you should close the Krab?

MR. KRABS: It's a free event. It wouldn't make a difference.

SANDY: But it could be the publicity you need! I talked to a few people, all of them were upset that you were closing the place.

MR. KRABS: It's a nice try, Sandy, but I just don't have the money to keep the place running.

SCENE SEVEN

(Spongebob and Patrick are paused outside of Room 414.)

PATRICK: What are you waiting for?

SPONGEBOB: I just...what if I don't want to know, Patrick? What if all of this is better off left alone?

PATRICK: You don't want to be left in the dark, Sponge.

(Spongebob nods in agreement, and then pushes the door open. His grandmother is laying in bed, looking very ill. He rushes to her side.)

SPONGEBOB: Grandma! What happened?

GRANDMA SQUAREPANTS: Spongebob...don't...

SPONGEBOB: What??

GRANDMA SQUAREPANTS: Don't get involved in...don't make the same mistakes I did.

(Her hand goes limp, and Spongebob, panicking, checks her pulse. But she's gone. He breaks down in tears, Patrick resting his hand on Spongebob's shoulder.)

SCENE EIGHT

(Spongebob is meeting with a lawyer.)

LAWYER: She left you a considerable amount of money. I'd invest it in something wise.

(Spongebob still has tears in his eyes. Then, he realizes.)

SCENE NINE

(Spongebob, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward are in front of the Krusty Krab. There is a sign that says GRAND RE-OPENING. Reporters are taking pictures, and Mr. Krabs places a Krusty Krab hat back on Squidward's head. They embrace, and for a brief moment, Spongebob is happy.)
