Sex's Rap Reviews

Doctor Sex

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking of doing this for a while so i'll try to post reviews on Friday or Saturday nights. Reviews will mainly consist of songs, EPs, albums, mixtapes, etc. I might even end up dabbling into other genres depending on the circumstances but who knows.

Young Money's back and they got a new album called Rise of an Empire. Actually it's been out for 2 months but just now the one song is charting  :P. Anyway, I've been hearing slightly better things about it then their last album but I still doubt i'll listen to it. The song off Rise of an Empire which i'll be reviewing is:

Drake - Trophies

Spoiler

Before I begin reviewing the lyrics I just wanna say this beat is hot. Its nothing special but super bangin' and is produced by Hit-Boy who's been a great mainstream rap producer these past few years. Drake's flow on this though is killer. Now with the lyrics.

[Verse 1]

Had hit records on my demo
Did y'all boys not get the memo
I do not stay at the Intercontinental
And anything I got is not a rental, I own that mothafucka

Drake's lucky his flow is killer cause this is just a silly brag rap song so far.

Figured out this shit, it's simple

I like where this is going maybe he'll tell us why success is so simple.

My stock been going up like a crescendo

Course not.

A bunch of handshakes from the fakes
But nigga I do not want to be friends though

Yeah yeah you're staying with your friends from day 1 heard it before.

I told y'all mothafuckas, man, this shit is not a love song

This is a fuck a stripper on a mink rug song

Despite him not telling us previously that this shit is not a love song that was a pretty clever line.

This a fuck them boys forever, hold a grudge song

Wow this is going somewhere. He's saying that he doesn't want his day 1 friends to get in the way of his success.

Pop some fucking champagne in the tub song, nigga, "just because" song

Aaaand he just killed what could've become a good verse.

[Hook]

What's the move? Can I tell truth?
If I was doing this for you
Then I have nothing left to prove, nah
This for me, though
I'm just tryna stay alive and take care of my people

Wait if you're just tryna to take care of your people why would you say "fuck them boys forever". Unless you're talking about the fans which would make more sense.

And they don't have no award for that
Trophies, trophies
And they don't have no award for that
Shit don't come with trophies
Ain't no envelopes to open
I just do it cause I'm 'sposed to, nigga

I was gonna say if he finished that line at "Shit don't come with trophies" that would be pretty bad being you should do good not just for the award. Good thing he said "I just do it cause I'm 'sposed to, nigga"

[Verse 2]

Bitch I go to Dreams with a suitcase

He's trying to build off that previous line about this not being a love song but it doesn't really work here.

I got my whole country on a new wave

Um cool I guess, doesn't have much to do with the song though unless its aimed at only Canadian fans.

She like, "I heard all your niggas stay where you stay"
House so big I haven't seen them boys in two days
Bitch, I use a walkie talkie just to get a beverage

Alright now you're just bragging about your house, NEXT.

I saw my parents split up right after the wedding
That taught my ass to stay committed, fuck the credit

I know having your parents get divorced is tough on someone young but he's really just using that here as an excuse to sound raw.

Bitch check the numbers, I'm the one who really get it

If you're seriously saying you're the only one who's experienced divorce as a little kid you're really wrong about that.

I told y'all mafuckas, man, this shit is not a love song

This a doing me and only God can judge song

Whatever happened to your people?

I do not know what the fuck you thought it was song

Right you are Drake, I don't know what this song is trying to be.

Pop some fucking champagne in the tub song, nigga, "just because" song

...

Then it cuts back to the chorus and the beat fades out.

Overall this song is typical of Drake: it doesn't know what it wants to be about and has no continuity between the verses. The only positives I can think of is the hot beat and killer flow.

Oh A$AP Mob either you love 'em or hate 'em (and by that I mean A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ferg). Since last year this guys have been planning some EP/album to come out titled L.O.R.D. It was originally supposed to come out in December then it was moved to May 4 but instead we got the pretty good songs Trillmatic and Xscape during that time. In honor of these delays i'll review their first mixtape as a group called...

A$AP Mob - Lord$ Never Die (2012)

Here's the A$AP lineup if you were wondering: A$AP Rocky, A$AP Yams, A$AP Nast, A$AP Ty Beats, A$AP Ferg, A$AP Twelvyy, A$AP Ant

1. Thuggin' Noise feat. A$AP Rocky

Spoiler

Let me just say compared to Rocky's previous mixtape, LiveLoveA$AP, this beat is really disappointing but I can still enjoy its spaced out vibe and the almost chopped and screwed sounding mix towards the end. As for the lyrics they're pretty lame. This is more of a cloud rap song so I get it's supposed to be all warped and silly but Rocky is taking himself to seriously for this kind of song. Pretty much throughout the song he's just saying he fucks bitches, sippin the syrup, etc with his day 1 crew so thats pretty generic. I'd expect more from Rocky after his great mixtape before this.

6/10

2. Full Metal Jacket feat. A$AP Rocky, A$AP Twelvyy, Da$h, A$AP Ant, A$AP Ferg, A$AP Nast

Spoiler

This beat is bangin'. It's nothing more then a generic trap beat but you definitely need to turn the volume all the way up to truly enjoy this song. Again these lyrics are just them rapping about generic hood stuff and this isn't even a cloud rap song so it just sounds really generic. The only rapper who shines in this is A$AP Ferg who, unlike these other guys, knows that if you rap about generic stuff you might as well be an exciting MC which Ferg definitely is.

6/10

3. Bangin on Waxx feat. A$AP Ferg & A$AP Nast

Spoiler

I keep trying to listen to this and this beat still blows. Its not even a good cloud rap beat. Anyways, the lyrics, yeah they're nothing special Ferg brings his exciting MCing but that doesn't save these pathetic gangsta lyrics. Nast is a pretty decent MC too but these lyrics and beat doesn't help this song at all.

3/10

Gonna hopefully finish this review tomorrow since I didn't exactly plan well when choosing when to write this.

Just like A$AP Mob I've had some delays of my own so finally I get to finish this.

4. Coke and White Bitches: Chapter 2 feat. A$AP Ant, Danny Brown, Fat Trel, Gunplay

Spoiler

I'm pretty sure there is no Chapter 1 to this so already i'm confused about that. Anyway, this beats nothing special but pretty bangin' and serves as a good backdrop to this rather insightful song. First we get A$AP Ant on the first verse and surprise its about fuckin' bitches, drugs, hood, etc, but damn his flow is sick so I can't complain too much. Next we got Danny Brown who's one of my favorite rappers out now but this is pretty forgettable verse for him. I thought his verse "Ain't talking 'bout hooping, when she say ball game" was pretty clever though heheh. After that we get some verses from Maybach Musics Fat Trel and Gunplay who have pretty fun flow but nothing special in this. Overall this songs got generic hood lyrics but sick flows and bangin' beat so yeah... its pretty enjoyable.

7/10

5. Bath Salt feat. A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ant, Flatbush ZOMBiES

Spoiler

This beat really sucks it's not even a basic banger. First 2 verses are by some of my other favorite rappers Flatbush ZOMBiES and well they really didn't bring their A game and I'd expect more from them because 2 months earlier they released an amazing mixtape. They bring that zombie flow but A$AP Ant is obviously trying to copy Flatbush's rapping style and Rocky, well lets just say this song isn't really for him.

5/10

6. Persian Wine feat. A$AP Ferg

Spoiler

Yeah don't have much to say about this. I like Ferg but he really doesn't belong on this song this is more of a cloud beat that sounds like something Rocky should be on. Pretty generic lyrics nothing special. Overall I like the spaced out beat but it gets ruined by Ferg's wacky style.

5/10

7. Black Mane feat. A$AP Nast

Spoiler

All I have to say is this guy has potential to be good but his super simple swag rap lyrics really don't help him establish who he is. Bangin' trap beat i'll give it that.

6/10

8. Dope, Money, Hoes feat. Da$h

Spoiler

You might be confused but this is one of my favorite tracks on this tape. The lyrics may be really simple but this is just solid cloud rap. The beat is spaced out and is just the kind of rap you can chill out too.

8/10

9. Work feat. A$AP Ferg

Spoiler

Not surprised why this didn't get on his album. The synth in the background and Ferg's rapping makes this his trademark song but the lack of an actual hi-hat and kick-drum in the beat makes this sound unfinished. Definitely check out the remix instead for a more complete song.

6/10

10. Y.N.R.E. feat. A$AP Twelvyy

Spoiler

I don't know why you would listen to this not for the beat. Props to AraabMuzik for producing this and Dope, Money, Hoes which are some of the best beats on here.

7/10

11. Purple Kisses feat. A$AP Rocky

Spoiler

Wow this beat sound's almost identical to Persian Wine but I'm gonna have to side with this beat since it doesn't just rely on speaker breaking bass and is more spaced out. Now this is the type of Rocky song I like its cloudy and the lyrics are super simple but that's what cloud rap is about right? Only problem is this song reminds me way to much of his other song Purple Swag which I think is a great song while this just seems like a failed followup to it.

5/10

12. The Way It Go feat. A$AP Ant

Spoiler

Just wanna say I love the Triple Six Mafia sample which replays throughout the song. As for the lyrics its a cloudy song so I can excuse its laziness but this guy is just a lame ass rapper. The beats pretty bangin' though and his flow is pretty good so you know this song doesn't need much intelligence to enjoy.

6/10

13. Freeze feat. A$AP Rocky & Jim Jones

Spoiler

Oh hey its Jim Jones, your verse is, well, it's interesting. It's all warped and slow which matches the beat but how's Rocky's verse?I kinda like how it's a weird sex song but the beat ruins Rocky's rapping. It might be spaced out but it's just really boring. I'd expect the beat to be much better since its by Clams Casino who's an amazing cloud rap producer who supplied many of the great beats on Rocky's mixtape LiveLoveA$AP.

5/10

14. Told Ya feat. A$AP Ant & Bodega Bamz

Spoiler

Now this is solid cloud rap, with a sweet Triple Six Mafia sample as well. And that's really all I can say they're lyrics aren't really anything innovative so this song really just relies on the beat and their flows.

6/10

15. Underground Killa$ feat. A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ferg, Raekwon

Spoiler

Pretty decent throwback east coast beat but I'm not really impressed by their rapping either. All of them are literally just talking about how tough their hood was and man does Ferg sound so out of place on this track. He's wacky style doesn't go at all with this chilled out beat. As for Rocky he's pretty forgettable on this but legendary Raekwon of Wu Tang can't even spit a good verse on this. As I said before he's just rapping about how hardcore his hood was.

5/10

16. Jay Reed feat. A$AP Twelvyy & Da$h

Spoiler

Love this beat sounds like a combination of east coast boom bap with cloud rap. The rapping on the other hands is lazy and boring though. Sure is a lot of references that's for sure.

6/10

17. Gotham City feat. A$AP Twelvyy, A$AP Ferg, A$AP Nast

Spoiler

Now here's a song Ferg belongs on with a great hook provided by him. Ferg shines out of all these guys he does great on this as for the other guys who just sound pretty uninspired and generic. At least we're back to trap songs and none of those boring throwbacks.

6/10

18. Choppas on Deck feat. A$AP Ferg

Spoiler

Yeah I really don't wanna say anything about these lyrics since Ferg's rapping collides with this spaced out track so annoyingly.

5/10

Overall this is a pretty weak tape. Aside from some of the production and flows its pretty forgettable. It just sounds like they wanna sound real before they put anything good out. Not even the features help this. Hopefully A$AP's upcoming EP/album is better then this.

As per request by Wumbo tonight's review is:

Lil Wayne - 6 Foot 7 Foot Ft. Corey Gunz

Spoiler

Lol i've never seen this video before.

Before I begin tonight's review I just wanna say I like some of Lil Wayne's music. I haven't heard any full releases of Wayne's but much of his earlier stuff is decent to good southern hip hop. Some of his earlier mixtapes such Dedication, Dedication 2, and Da Drought 3 are pretty well regarded in the southern hip hop fanbase. I'm not fan of most of his pop hits but dammit he sure knows how to make em' catchy. Back to the song.

Right off the bat you can tell this song is right in your face with its speaker breaking bass beat. Now for the lyrics.

[Hook]

Six foot, seven foot, eight foot bunch

I'm a lil (hehe) confused by this sample so lets see what the rest of the song has to say.\

[Verse 1]

Excuse my charisma, vodka with a spritzer

Apparently vodka makes Lil Wayne interesting to people. Isn't he a rapper or something.

Swagger down pat, call my shit Patricia

According to Rap Genius "Patricia" is Birdman's (a fellow rapper) mom ????

Young Money militia and I am the commissioner

Did you guys know Lil Wayne was the leader of Young Money?!

You don't want start Weezy 'cause the F is for finisher

WHAT F? "WEEZY" DOESN'T HAVE AN "F" IN IT. Also lol how he says finisher.

So misunderstood, but whats a world without enigma?

Meh the only thing I can't understand about you are your lyrics.

Life is the bitch and death is her sister

Sleep is the cousin, what a fuckin' family picture

Lol Nas but that was actually a pretty clever line.

You know father time, we all know Mother Nature
It's all in the family but I am of no relation

Fuck is that supposed to mean?

Black and white diamonds, fuck segregation

Alright thats just dumb.

Young Money running shit and you niggas just runner ups
I don't feel I done enough so I'ma keep on doing this shit

Yer cool

Lil Tunechi or Young Tunafish

"Young Tunafish"

[Hook]

Six foot, seven foot, eight foot bunch x2

So far that first verse hasn't explained the meaning of this at all.

Okay, I lost my mind, it's somewhere out there stranded
I think you stand under me if you don't understand me

Guess im standing under you then

Just talked to Moms, told her she the sweetest

Really now

Y'know what I hate doing this but I give up. What I can gather is through listening to the rest of this song is hes a misunderstood king of the rap game. But its kinda hard to figure out since all the verses are just decent to bad rhymes that only showcase Wayne's flow on the beat. Overall this song isn't boring but the lyrics are just bragging and some bullshit about being misunderstood. This would be nice as background music to a party though. 6/10

You should review something featuring the world's greatest producer DJ Mustard.

*plays boring/standard synth beat*

MUSSID ONNA BEE OH

In all honesty, I can tolerate "6 Foot 7 Foot". One of Lil Wayne's better songs.

Looks like someone beat me to that song.

One problem I have with this song is that it just doesn't stop talking it up. There's one little moment of silence, but that's it. I also find the song at least really catchy regardless, especially for whatever word keeps being chanted in the background.

Stop talking it up? Please explain.

The words being chanted in the background is the sampling of Day O by Harry Belafonte btw.

It just annoys me that the song doesn't really shut up, but not in a offensive way of saying it, but still, my point is that the fact that it doesn't shut up most of the time from Harry Belafonte's sampled up vocals to Lil Wayne and Cory Gunz's rapping gives me  a bit of a migraine.
