  1. Beach Rats.

Honestly, like...I was quite invested in the movie and definitely wanted to know what would happen to the protagonist, Frankie, but while he was a very interesting character, the ending just completely ruined everything. You spend a good 90 minutes with Frankie as he seemingly comes to terms with his sexuality as he goes about his days hanging around his asshole friends, smoking and doing drugs, dealing with his dad's health/death persueing a relationship with a girl called Simone, and hooking up with gay guys he contacts through one of those weird cam sites. And then...

...once you think they'll actually get to a resolution, it's over.

Instead you've just spent an entire movie following this young man about his live during one summer. It feels inconsequential. He's likeable enough I suppose, especially compared to his friends, but the movie is confusing because it just dangles all these details about his life in front of you and there they stay. It's definitely trying to be one of those LGBT movies. The ones that end tragically for the protagonist. Except under no circumstance does it earn that right since Frankie's never put through any major conflict anyway? His father dies, but that's in the first half hour, and then he continues his life as usual as if the father's death was an accessory.

But yeah, I'm seething a little over the ending, where it just cuts out once Frankie looks out at the beach where his friends (are at least implied to have) killed a guy from the site Frankie was going to hook up with in order to steal his drugs. I thought this hook-up guy would turn Frankie's life around and act as a changing point for him since he was a pretty sweet guy and Frankie also knows this, but no. He's killed off too and the movie decides it's over once Frankie supposedly feels remorse for a character we've only seen on screen for like five minutes. This film isn't full of cheap moves like that...because it is a cheap move in and of itself.

I can't bring myself to hate the movie though; it was captivating, I can give it that. But once you realize it's over it's just so..."feh." Everything outside of it ending unexpectedly is pretty solid, and if it was longer (or didn't kill that guy off), it could've been better by giving Frankie a satisfying conclusion to the story. Hell, it doesn't even need to be a happy ending; you can still aim for a tragic gay film provided you actually have an ending that makes sense.

  2. Well, I've been hoping they would for a while now, but my university has finally decided to move everything online in the wake of COVID-19. Although technically speaking, they've simply cancelled all the "face to face classes" whilst keeping the campuses themselves open so that students can continue accessing its facilities and IT equipment and what have you. It's something, although I kinda wish they'd just shut down completely to some extent even if I don't actually live on campus and then make some choices regarding what to do for assignments that may require software only accessible there. After all, I know for a fact that each computer in a room I frequent is used by multiple people within the span of a day, so I wouldn't actually want to touch anything on site that could potentially give me the virus period. The cleaning staff don't seem to be making regular trips to clean the facilities either, so I just don't want to go back to uni. (Although if this partial closure is in effect up to the first week of April, I technically have no obligation or neccesity to go back to uni until my third year since I only have two timetabled terms. Ain't uni fun?)

I suppose I am quite happy with what they have put in place all in all though since I've heard that there are rumors that students on campus have it but at the same time it's somewhat annoying, because I have deadlines in the coming weeks and one of them was a project I was doing with a friend and now I can't - and don't - want to commute to convene with her. Fortunately we've found a workaround but still, it's not quite exactly the same as working together in person so it might affect our work output. I'm hoping they make some alterations to the deadlines or something since I need that adjustment.

But aside from that, I've heard that TfL is looking into cleaning its services regularly during the day which is nice considering how many people use the trains and buses. I will say I've used the trains to make my way back home a couple times in the past two weeks and honestly it's not like I was really freaking out being on public transport when there's a virus threatening our way of life because for a majority of people public transport is their only means of getting to and fro, and as such they can't afford to have it shut down, so they just have to ensure they're keeping themselves as clean as possible before and after they use public transport.

I also went shopping yesterday and wow...Twitter really wasnt kidding when they said people were stocking up on toiler paper and hand sanitizer. Although I don't understand the toiler paper part? I suppose it will ease people's minds to know that they have toilet paper at home if they need to isolate themselves, but...why? An overstock on toilet paper isn't going to save you. Wash your hands. Use sanitizer (which people also need to stop buying in large quantities and/or selling at ridiculous price hikes online - the virus affects everyone, let's not be assholes by profiting from it!). And if anything this panic buying nonsense affects those who genuinely need to buy toilet paper. I swear, panic-buying is absolutely nonsensical and I really can't stand it at all.

  3. Probably gonna say a mix between both Netflix and Prime; Netflix has some of my old favs like Little Britain and Come Fly With Me as well as some gay movies I'm interested in watching at some point in the future and Prime offers shows like Parks & Rec, The Office, The Middle, etc. as well as their own selection of gay movies (I think I saw Sauvage on Prime so I don't have to buy it. Yay!) and they also have Drawn Together, which I'm probably gonna buy on Prime so we have it.

Disney+ sounds cool, but I mean I do have physical copies of all the movies I could want to watch on it and none of the original shows and exclusive remakes they're planning really spark my interest so for me their only selling point would be the nostalgia of really old cartoons of theirs being on it.

  4. I'm not gonna go all defensive on Jolly Lodgers - I lost that energy for SB back with SB You're Fired when I was 14 - but I definitely do think Jolly Lodgers is one of the best post-sequel episodes I've seen thus far, if not my actual personal post-sequel favorite of all time, so much so I'm willing to put very high on my best list whenever we get to doing those. I just found it an interesting watch, and I loved every minute of it. I don't have much of a thing against episodes where SpongeBob and Patrick annoy Squidward throughout - seriously, a lot of episodes have used and will continue to use this basic episode plot outline, I will never understand complaints against it but ok - but the fact that this episode ends with Squidward getting back at them both in a very outlandish fashion and coming out on top by the end of the episode (in his own world at least, since he's finally free of them) makes it even better.

I guess I'm also a sucker for the hotel setting, so there's that too. The Shining reference was also pretty cool, too.

I can definitely see myself watching this episode again and again, which is something I can't really say about...well...any typical episode of the show (as in, non-special episodes).

I know Mr. Krabs was rocking a tasty energy drink.

Interesting that Krabs of all people would have an energy drink; also how would you know if it was tasty, did you try to taste whatever he was having?
