  1. I read somewhere Steve Hillenburg said that in "The Great Snail Race", after SpongeBob called Gary a lady, it cut to Sandy and she said, "I don't know, why, but I'm gonna kick SpongeBob's butt tomorrow", that line was added to show kids not to discriminate women.

It would probably be better if I had more experience drawing the characters but I chose to just draw them like you did

What do you plan on doing after HS?

I want to take college classes for art and animation and would really love to become a writer/storyboarder for a real cartoon

This thread and you needs more love?

  3. Today in English class while reading the play Julius Caesar, I noticed there was a subtle reference to the play in this episode.

Maybe you have noticed this too. A famous line from the play, "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears" may sound familiar, right?

Changed to "Friends, classmates, juvenile delinquents", this is definately the classiest reference to the 1500s in all of SpongeBob.

  5. When I saw this topic I thought it was just going to be a modern remake of the first movie but I like that it's like a sequel. The Chevy Chase appearance was cool though, and the rest of the actors are pretty great. It's pretty cool how Rusty turned into Clark's character :P. I'm kinda excited for this actually, I loved the National Lampoon movies and this looks pretty funny too.

  6. Honestly with how the first movie wraps up everything I think it really does take place at the end of the series. Yeah, that screenshot shows it would be after SBSP Movie but since it was cut there was nothing else in SOOW that implied the time placement. I feel like after the show is "done" Plankton is in jail and SpongeBob is the manager of the KK 2, and everything we see will have taken place before that.

  7. I'm not really happy about this. Yeah I'd love a new SpongeBob movie, but maybe in years from now as a finale or something, or when the time was right and the writers thought of another great story. It took ten years for SOOW to surface (ha) and it was good, but even in that movie you could tell how much Nickelodeon controlled it (i.e. fart jokes, butt jokes, etc.) I wonder if Steve and Paul even wanted to hand the writing over to Glenn and Jonathan, or if the network made them since they wrote recent popular kids movies. I am disgusted that Nickelodeon is using SpongeBob to get rich like they are. I'd much rather ten more years of well written episodes than one more movie right now.

  8. This is also important I think. The sound plays a lot less nowadays because compared to Season 1, the show is a lot less atmospheric and spends a lot less time establishing places. At the beginning the show feels a whole lot more ocean-y because it needed to cement how different it was. Now that the show is kind of this gem of pop culture, that thing that set it apart is just taken for granted, and thus the show feels a lot more generic because of it.

The opening moments of episodes like Ripped Pants and Bubblestand are these really simple, quiet moments that feature the water sound, slow pans across landscapes, and the French Narrator establishing a calm tone, and the show has become so loud and less and less about the ocean that I worry we'll never get moments like it again. As time progresses we get less and less moments on the show that could only fit in SpongeBob and could be interchanged in any other show airing today. This sound is more important than it seems, because it's part of SpongeBob's identity which has faded away as time with the show has passed.

You're right on with what I've been thinking. Sure, seasons two through even four had great stories and are iconic but season one was better at everything else than any other season. The calm moments in SpongeBob was what made it appeal to me in the first place. Like the ending to Rock Bottom and the beginning of Texas. Maybe now with Sherm back for some writing it'll get a little closer to what it used to be, since he took part in writing many of the relaxed episodes. The change probably has a lot to with Derek Drymon not the creative director anymore. Vincent is great, but it's not the same.
  9. Correction: The first fish is named Milo.

Meh yeah I know but Milo is technically a variant of the name Miles. Besides, both those names are uncommon so I think it might be more than a coincidence :P
