  1. Surprisingly, I didn't see a topic on this already. So, yeah. Spongebob and Patrick go back to Bikini Bottom back in the middle ages after a jousting accident. There's medieval versions of Plankton, Squidward, Pearl, and Mr. Krabs and Sandy, too. Spongebob, Patrick and Squidley have to stop Planktonimor from destroying Pearl and the entirety of Bikini BottomShire.

It was a pretty good episode, and one of the best Post Movie specials. Everything seemed to work, and most of the jokes were executed well. The songs that Squidley sang were hilarious, and the action was coreographed pretty well. The animation was great too. 9.5/10.

    What did you guys think?

  2. GUYS. Hillenburg is working on the movie. Quote:

"Paul and I have been working on a movie premise; the story for a second movie. That's really what we've been busy with. Paul's going to direct this one, I'm going to produce but I'm going to help write it and we're kind of excited about the story (I can't talk about it yet). It's going to be delivered in 2014 so we had to get on it because that's only 2 years. [...] From the first movie we learned a lot because we write the show by storyboarding, we don't write a script, and we found very soon that it's incredibly hard to just write a loose outline and start boarding and make a movie. We finally pulled it together but it was challenging. This time Paul and I have really blocked out the three acts and we have a fun twist. We know where the movie's going a little more than in the first case, but it's always hard ... it's going to be challenging no matter what."

  3. I'd like to see more MermaidMan and BarnacleBoy, and in fact, I wouldn't even mind a 7th episode in roman numerals now that the MM&BB eps have started to suck less.

It's funny, I remember saying something just like this a while ago....

Anyway, I doubt that they'll do anything special for the 200th episode. For the 100th episode, we got Banned In Bikini Bottom and Stanley S. Squarepants, which were hardly special. I've already posted my thoughts on what I want elsewhere, so I'll repost some of those:

-I want them to give Aaron Springer a Storyboard Directing partner again. Aaron and C.H Greenblatt were the best writing team in Seasons 2-3. I want a callback to those days. Aaron in Post Movie has been partnered with Chris Reccardi, Charlie Bean, Vincent Waller, and Sean Charmatz. The episodes with these partners were among some of Aaron's greatest. Now he storyboard directs alone, while every other storyboard director is a team of two (Casey Alexander has Zeus Cervas, Luke Brookshier has Marc Ceccareli, etc.). I kinda feel bad for the dude. He's been writing great episodes lately; imagine what a good partner could do to help that.

-Better animation. It's been progressively getting better. I want to see the show reach Season 4's excellent animation quality.

-More underwater elements need to be added. Episodes like "Bubble Troubles" are a step in the right direction.

-More APM music. Yeah, this season featured a lot of new original music (the title card music for Drive Thru, etc), and S8 let us hear the full versions of tracks we got glimpses of in Season 7 (Animal Antics is featured a lot more, and Home Sweet Rubble's title card music is heard frequently), but I much prefer the APM music of Pre-Movie. Come on. "Now That We're Men" is simply lyrics added to an APM track. I'd like things like that back.

-I want to see if we'll get a new head writer or not. Steven Banks has jumped ship to "The Governator". I wonder if he'll leave to focus on that, or if he'll stay with Spongebob. If Steven leaves, I wonder if a new head writer will have any adverse effects on the show. Hope not.

-They need to start numbering the Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episodes again. Now that they've sarted to suck a little less (Mermaid Man begins was a Pre-Movie quality ep.), I think it's high time that we finally get a Seventh episode. I don't know. It brings back a Pre-Movie vibe to have the episodes numbered. (I knew I had said it before)

-More beach episodes. They're generally enjoyable. The last one we had was Sand Castles In The Sand back in Season 6. I'd actually like episodes in the vein of Life In A Day, in the fact where the episode has a beachy feel (the music, the character's clothing), but doesn't take place entirely at Goo Lagoon.

-Sweeter moments between people that aren't Plankton and Karen. Moments like the ones from Dying For Pie. Nowadays, only Karen and Plankton get sentimental moments. Sometimes, there's the occasion where someone else will have them (Spongebob's letter to Patrick in "Hide And Then What Happens?" is really sweet) but nobody else really gets sentimental moments. I want heartwarming stuff in the show again. "Free Samples" and "Mooncation" have endings that are a step in the right direction.

-And finally, less Plankton episodes (he's becoming extra boring; his neurosis has been explored enough), and also, less of Mr. Krabs being a jerk. He's so mean and greedy nowadays (I'd say that he and Spongebob were hit the worst with Flanderization).

-Aaron Springer, Vincent Waller, Mr. Lawrence, and Paul Tibbitt (and maybe Sean Charmatz for good measure) need to write an episode together. They are the last Pre-Movie writers on the show. It's the best idea ever. DO IT, GUYS.

And that's about it. If Season 9 can be better than Season 4, I'll be satisfied.

  4. I really don't know what to say about this Season. After two years of crappy episodes (Season 6), these episodes were certainly a step up. But really.... The first half is almost as bad as Season 6 to me. Episodes like Growth Spout, Stuck In The Wringer, The Inside Job, Someone's In The Kitchen With Sandy, A Pal For Gary, Summer Job, One Coarse Meal, The Cent Of Money, and Trenchbillies all register to me as mediocre and garbage.

But then, in the Second half of the Season, things started turning around. Episodes had a weird new feel, the humor was better, and more underwater references began to pop up. If you're watching Spongebob all the way through, and your drop-off point was around Atlantis Squarepantis, then pick up again at The Great Patty Caper. That's where the episodes become consistently good.

There were some first half good episodes, though. I Heart Dancing, Tentacle Vision, Model Sponge, Kracked Krabs, Spongebob's Last Stand, Back To The Paast, etc. The art here got a lot better, and gross out is used less. The music recieved some new tracks, and the voices got a little less screamy. The episodes themselves seem reminiscient of S5, but they're not as good.

A step up from S6, not as good as S5. 7.0/10.

  5. I will never understand why this is regarded as the worst Season. Really? Sure, it's not as good as Seasons 1-4, but seriously. How on earth is this worse than the crap that is Season 6? Even a regular episode of Season 6 paired against a bad Season 5 episode will fail. Sure, this season has bad crap, like Fungus Among Us, SpongeHenge, The Battle Of Bikini Bottom, To Save A Squirrel, Good Ol Whatshisname and Boat Smarts (yeah, I've got some Richard Pursel slaughter in me, bro). But honestly, things like Roller Cowards, Krabs A La Mode, New Digs, The Two Faces Of Squidward, Banned In Bikini Bottom, Bucket Sweet Bucket, Friend Or Foe, Sing A Song Of Patrick, and Spongebob V.S The Patty Gadget really balance out the crap.

Meanwhile, Season 6 has about 4 redeeming episodes, almost lost in a sea of mediocrity or garbage. S5 isn't as good as S4, but it's better than everything that follows it. Yes, I am of the belief that S7+S8 isn't as good as S5. Not even really b/c of the humour, but because of other things, like the storyboards, music, and voices.

The art and music here are a tad awkward at times, but it works. The humor here at least tried to be clever, instead of being focused on gross-out *cough*Season6*cough*. It was a little iffy here and there, but arguably the Season that blends Pre and Post Movie the best;. SB wasn't too annoying/stupid, Squidward wasn't overabused, and Mr. Krabs wasn't a total jerk yet. The animation was still fun, too. Then S6 and beyond came.

If Spongebob is a roller coaster, and if S 1-3 were a non stop thrill ride, and S4 was an awkward (but still fun) loop-de-loop, then S5 was those last little fun hills before the coaster breaks down and goes Final Destination 3 on you.

Good, but not great. Atlantis Squarepantis is a perfect example of what this season is; it's trying to be like Pre-Movie, and in some respects, it succeeds. But mostly, it feels like an attempt that is trying so hard to be good, but isn't as good as it wants to be.

This season gets a solid 8/10.

  6. Mr. Lawrence! You probably know him as the guy who voices Plankton, but that's not all he does. He was a writer for Rocko's Modern Life, too. And on Spongebob, from Seasons 1 to 2, he wrote a lot of episodes, too! Great ones, like Christmas Who, Tea At The Treedome, Graveyard Shift, and the first two Mermaid Man And Barnacle Boy episodes.

He then left the writing department for a very long time. He then came back five seasons later in Season 7 to write again, and he's been writing ever since. He's also got some of the better Post Movie episodes under his belt, and Model Sponge and Sweet And Sour Squid are probably the best of his episodes. He also voices Plankton and Larry The Lobster.

What are your thoughts on the guy?

  7. It was okay. I will say, I'm starting to like Mr. Lawrence as a writer more and more, because I'm almost certain that the beginning part was written by him. For those that don't know, Spongebob pointing at the drawings at the beginning of the episode was what the storyboard directors on the actual show really do. I thought that scene was really cool.

Other than that, I thought that Fiasco returning was cool (we've had a lot of continuity this Season, huh) but the rest of the episode wasn't too funny. The ending made up for it though, as that was kinda funny.

    B+ or 8.5/10.

  8. The show's been crawling out of the hole of badness it was in since Season 6. It's been continually getting better, and Season 8 has been great. I think Season 9 will be really awesome, maybe even at the levels of Season 1. Now that'd rock. I think it's cool that the show has sort of gone backwards in quality:

    Season 4: Great

    Season 5 Part 1: Good

    S5 Part 2: Mediocre

    Season 6: Terrible

    Season 7 Part 1: Mediocre

    S7 Part 2: Good

    Season 8: Great

I doubt it was intentional, bit it's cool nonetheless.

  9. This episode was weird. The funny moments weren't all over the place like they were in the previous episodes (though Patrick's office scene was pretty hilarious), but for some reason, I really liked this episode. The character development between Sandy and Patrick while Spongebob struggled to hold his Pineapple up managed to be funny as well. I also liked the Slow-mo dried up mustard scene.

I can't put my finger on it, but I liked this episode for some reason, and it wasn't really because it was funny. Regardless, it was good. 9/10. I liked the fact that almost everyone in the main cast was here, too.

  10. For the first time, I'm differing from the crowd. I didn't think this episode was mediocre whatsoever. I loved it! From the "Can I Walk with you?" scene, to the insanely hilarious lawyers, and then to a clever Spongebob formula subversion (Patrick is annoying Squidward here), it was a really great episode with a simple premise and a whole lot of jokes. This episode was spectacular.

The crowning moment of hilarity would have to be the collection of scens where Patrick was following Squidward. I was really cracking up at that part, especially when Patrick bumped Squidward's reflection from the mirror. I lol'd.

Great eppy. 9.5/10. (took off some points for the extremely stupid fart joke. Only bad thing about the episode)

  11. how about you give it a chance before jumping to conclusions? srsly, give a valid argument instead of just the new eps sucks. there has been some new eps have liked IMHO

i don't hate nostalgics, but at least RESPECT others who still like the new eps

I find it quite funny that he thinks that Pre-Movie writers will save the movie when we have four Pre Movie writers on the show right now (Paul Tibbitt and Aaron Springer, Mr. Lawrence, Vincent Waller) and that they've all written their fair share of bad episodes. What'll make the movie good is effort. Pre-Movie writers are not a saving grace that make everything great.

Anyway, I hope that since they have two years to work on the movie (the same timeframe for the first one) that it'll be even better than the first, or at least on par with it. I'm really excited for the movie. We've had episodes with animation that rivals the movie's animation (Truth Or Square, Mooncation) so I'm banking on some really awesome animation.

These next two years of waiting are gonna be excruciating.

  12. This episode was written by the same guys that wrote "Dear Vikings".

Thank goodness this episode was 25 times better in every possible way imaginable than that mess. There were so many funny parts that I forgot what I was laughing at, but I do remember that the beginning was hilarious, and the whole montage section with Sponge and Pat trying to "fix" Glove World was amazing, and the ending, while a bit sad, was funny as well. I liked the running gags ("Has the world gone MAD?!") too.

It had a simple premise, a nice little Pre-Movie charm, and a ton of jokes that were smart and incredibly funny. Great work from Aaron Springer, for a change! :)

    A. It's not an A+, because of the shots of Patrick's butt and the incredibly annoying and incredibly long "NOOOOOOOOO!" gag. Otherwise, quite the amazing episode.

Another winner for the amazing Season 8.

  13. It's the first episode with SpongeBob's name in the title card, kinda cool.

I believe "Spongebob Meets The Strangler" did that eight years ago. :P

Anyway, I'm looking forward to catching this tomorrow. I heard Paul Tibbitt wrote for this episode. Is that true?

  14. Good day, friend people. I am Aquatic Nuggets, and I hark from a far off place called magicburg and-

Okay, as you can probably tell from that failed first sentence, I'm about as cool as a volcano. During a hazy morning, I decided to join the Spongebob Community! I like Spongebob, adore the pre-movie Seasons, like Seasons 4-5, hate Season 6 and want it to die in a fire and like Season 7, and at the moment, am warming up to Season 8.I'm also a fan of a talking blue hedgehog (you get three guesses as to who he is, and the first two don't count ;)), and I like to draw and read and play video games. I'm also Jibbix on the Spongebuddy Mania forums.

I hope to have lots of fun here! And brownies. Brownies are good.

  15. Planet Of The Jellyfish: Solid A-. It wasn't as gross as I thought it was going to be. And, I know it's a cartoon, but we never got any explanation as to where the Alien Jellyfish came from. They were just.... there. Otherwise, I liked the episode. The mayonaise was random, but funny. Also, bringing back Spongebob's original glasses made me like the episode a little more.

"Are You Happy Now?": C. Okay, the first half was funny, and I got a few really sick laughs at the "suicide gags" (Squidward's gonna kill himself in an oven-LOL JUST KIDDING he baked some brownies; Squidward's gonna hang himself LOL NO WAY he's just raising a cage), but the ending left a sour taste in my mouth. If anyone cares to remember episodes like Dying For Pie or Funny Pants, it's glaringly obvious that Squidward likes Spongebob deep down. Nowadays, in episodes like this one, Sponge-Cano, or Love That Squid, it seems like Squidward hates Spongebob and wants him to die. I really hate that. Otherwise, the Second half was lacking in jokes, and ultimately fell flat. Average episode. Also, the last line was weird, stupid, and pontless. "He's so handsome..." what??

  16. The guy was a precursor to Zeus Cervas, in the fact that he was a storyboard artist turned writer. He storyboarded for Seasons 2-3 before returning to writing in Season 4. He left in Season 5 for The Mighty B, and drew storyboards for Danny Phantom, and, uh... now that those shows are dead, I don't know what he's doing. I always liked his episodes though. Favorite one would probably be "Dunces And Dragons". He and Zeus were a pretty great Storyboard Direction team in Season 4. It's a shame he left.
