Part I: The Rise of Pope Mercury 

 

The Church was not a legitimate church at all, but a secret organization hidden within the depths of the ocean. Nobody knew why it existed, for what purpose... it served no religion. It was a building sitting isolated on the mountain overlooking Bikini Bottom. 

Its secrets were important ones. For the longest time, fish believed there were beings far above them... they'd seen their UFOs, their treacherous hooks, their robotic armor... but there had never been proof.

 

The Church held that proof. In particularly, Pope Mercury. 

 

Who was Pope Mercury, however? He certainly was no Pope, but the head of The Church. He knew what happened. 

 

Unfortunately, Pope Mercury was not entirely sane. His own secrets took priority over the interest of The Church. His operations caught the attention of the Bikini Bottom Police Department, and later the Oceanic federal government. Who was this fish? What was his mission? What did he know? What had he done to get there? 

 

As the fame of The Church increased, Pope Mercury became less and less transparent until his identity and location were completely unknown to everyone but his Inner Circle. 

 

And his Inner Circle was who assisted him in his sacrifices... Pope Mercury's desire was unknown, but he craved blood and would stop at nothing to get what he wanted.
