  1. This episode is notorious, FREAKING NOTORIOUS for starting the trend of bad modern SpongeBob. Up until here, Season 4 actually felt like classic SpongeBob. This is one of the SpongeBob episodes I was legitimately bored throughout the whole thing. It was mean spirited, it was boring, and it was annoying. But honestly, I thought it was just meh.

Also, I have a theory. I bet Vincent Waller a burger that Make Bikini Bottom Beautiful took place right after Good Neighbours, and that ticket at the end might have been a Congratulation ticket for winning against Squilliam, and that they were officially out of community service.

  2. How he was too kind about this episode? He said this episode is God-awful trash. Should we really call this episode Sandy torture porn or Bikini Bottomies are prick assholes episode, so we can be more harsh on this episode?

No, we should call it one of the worst animated THINGS of all time.

  3. This episode is terrible, the townsfolk, the writing, the implications, oh great NEPTUNE, the implications! This episode has by far, the WORST implications of any SB episode I've ever seen! They must have some sort of prejudice against Sandy, except they helped her in "Texas", and this is getting confusing.

WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THIS EPISODE?! WHY?!!?

  4. And now that my frustration-fueled rant is out of the way, on to the episode rant:

    Spoiler

So, here's the first episode of Season 4! An important one to discuss, as it signifies what many believe to be a huge change in the show we know and love. That is, a huge drop in quality. Is the drop quite so sudden? Well, if we're judging on the merits of this episode alone, I'm gonna say no, but I do believe cracks begin to show.

Those cracks, I think, have to do with a lack of new ideas. The writers were entering this episode fresh off a bombastic, spectacular movie, so it's fair to say that going back to the regular episodes is bound to disappoint in some aspects. Even though the movie takes place after the entire series, where can one go at this point that will excite the viewers and welcome back SpongeBob episodes into their hearts?

See, I don't know what the right answer is, but the wrong answer is "Graveyard Shift 2.0".

Now, this is a common complaint about this episode, so I won't harp on it too much, not only because it's oversaid, but because I do believe that they run with the idea in a different enough way that it's nowhere near a carbon copy. But when you've already had The Krusty Krab open for 24 hours, and you do it again... it's just really not the way a comeback to the series should be structured. Even SpongeBob's mental breakdown is almost reminiscent of "Pickles". It's like a bunch of different re-used plots mushed together.

Things do pick up at the Peter Lankton part, which is definitely the best part of the episode. It too, I feel is reminiscent of a previous episode (i.e. "Welcome to the Chum Bucket"), but I feel like it only copies the episode in its style of humour, with the characters used. And the humour in WTTCB is truly hilarious, so I have no qualms with that. I also thought that the look inside SpongeBob's head was a cool idea, complete with an E.T. reference that was just gold. But even this segment I have a problem with, because SpongeBob's overstated naivety begins to rear its ugly head. I'm solely talking about his going to that psychiatrist's building where the Chum Bucket used to be. I mean, I know his brain is fried and everything, but him not recognizing that it was The Chum Bucket still kinda threw me off.

All that said, there were still enough charms in this episode that made it fun to watch. I thought the background fish were used really well here, particularly the red fish at the beginning. His nonchalant reactions to Mr. Krabs' rage are pretty much exactly what I expect of the background fish; totally unnecessary, but quirky and funny. Old Man Jenkins' fourth wall break was great too.

The episode also writes Plankton well, even though he's a hard character to screw up, since he started out as an evil caricature. Still, his ever-growing frustration with SpongeBob is evident both in the writing and the voice acting. It's really funny to see the subtleties gradually amount to him screaming through a megaphone at SpongeBob to WAAAAAKE UUUUUUUUP!

Overall, this episode has its faults, but it also has its high points, and even though the cracks of post-movie start to show, they aren't enough to ruin a good start to Season 4.

    Grade: B+

SpongeBob, looking about as cracked as that egg.

Why would you call it a rant if the episode was good?

  5. I would WANT either Mr. Krabs and Patrick gone because I'm sick of both of them, but I know that there's just no way. Both of them are necessary evils (no Mr. Krabs means no Krusty Krab episodes, and no Patrick means no secondary character for plots involving Spongebob's wacky antics). To be honest, I think it's impossible to ditch any of the main characters realistically since the writers need all of them for certain things in the show to make certain stories work (yes, even Sandy comes in handy at times).

Well, one of them would still be there.

  6. This episode is bad but I've seen worse.

Yeah, if it didn't offend hillbillies, it wouldn't be on the list.

    The Thing

Being the tamest Squidward Torture Episode on here, it's still bad. Squidward, in short, gets tortured for being tortured. He was minding his own business until SB and P annoy Squid and make him leave on his bike. He then runs into the slide of a cement machine and gets cement all over his body. Then Squid goes through a garbage tunnel, and gets stung in Jellyfish Fields. Eventually, the cement hardens, and a blue bubble* from Cementward (that's what I'm gonna call him until the end of the episode) releases and pops. WUT. SB and P find Cementward and decide to name him Stinky. They take Cementward/Stinky to SB's house and apparently Gary doesn't like Cementward/Stinky - forget it, I'm calling him Cementward - because apparently Gary can predict the events of A Pal for Gary (this episode was from Season 4, APfG was from Season 7). They take Cementward to Patrick's rock, and in a stupidly stupid act of stupidity, Patrick tells the Zoo Force that a wild animal is in his house, and the Zoo Force come and take Cementward. They say that "wild animals belong in the zoo". I HATE YOU, ZOO FORCE!! Why not show an ounce of dignity and GIVE ANIMALS SOME FREEDOM, BUB!! Anyway, SB fails to protect Cementward and apparently, he's stuck being assaulted by a malicious clam for hours, and the Zoo Force doesn't seem to care. Yet another reason why I hate the Zoo Force in this episode. SB and P find Cementward in the zoo and take him. They go through a sewer; Cementward getting hurt on the way, they find a place where Cement-furwards, and Kelpy G. reside. That fall earlier must have cracked open the cement, as Squidward gets released. What was that blue bubble* for, then?
