I just rated this 4/5 stars. I just don't get it guys... What's so bad about this episode? The Incredible Shrinking Sponge is the one that I believe deserves the flack for being too weird and dumb.

1: SpongeBob and Patrick are horrifically dumbed down for the sole sake of having this plot in two ways. The first is that the only reason they're in Squidward's yard is because they can't even look at all sides of the box to see Sandy's name clearly there, which is etched out front and center for the audience to see which also basically spells out that she'll be involved later on anyways, thus completely making it predictable. The second thing is that they have absolutely no incentive to continue, and can back out at any time. Yet for whatever reason, they don't, mainly because if they do then this horribly structured plot completely falls apart because Squidward has nothing to force them in. All of this for sports which they somehow didn't even know existed beforehand because PLOT

2: Squidward is so horrifically one note here. At first he is justified because SpongeBob and Patrick's stupidity is so infuriating but over time, just like the rest of the episode, he is completely one note. Also saying this here since I dunno how to multiquote posts on different pages: It's not like the Snowball Effect or Skill Crane whatsoever. In Skill Crane he slowly becomes an addict to the crane, pretty much in vein of a gambler as the episode highlights his diving into insanity. In the Snowball Effect he slowly gets caught up in SpongeBob and Patrick's game a la Idiot Box. Here he does neither of those things and instead becomes a flat out static sadist because PLOT

3: The only joke in the entire episode (besides "we;re sports fans" which doesn't even count because it spells out the fucking joke) is that sports get reduced to people getting hurt, which is horrifically lazy, insulting, and bland. Alongside completely throwing away anything interesting that can be done with an episode about sporting events, something that SpongeBob is capable of utilizing well as shown in previous episodes, it grows tiring to see and makes the rest of the episode predictable, especially when the last three minutes an already predictable Sandy entrance just leads to Squidward predictably getting beaten up because PLOT NEEDS A KARMIC ENDING

4: The best character in this is Sandy, and she only exists to be a plot device for not even half of the episode.

This is the absolute laziest excuse of any form of entertainment that I have ever seen thrown at an audience, and alongside being unpleasant to watch on its' own, it's insulting how so much of this horrific episode could be fixed if there was a single person who proofread any of this. The most infuriating thing is that all of the glaring issues are so simple to fix, and how they didn't show me that nobody cared when making this episode. For example: give an actual reason for them to not see Sandy's name on the box like it being scratched out. Give them a reason to stay in the game, the crowd peer pressured Squidward so why not do that for SpongeBob and Patrick instead of giving them no motivation?

It feels like it's made from a broken down Factory of Sadness rather than a story that was made by a creative team in an attempt for people to enjoy. At least with the infamous episodes I can tell there was some effort put in there. It was certainly misguided but at least no other episode is completely broken within 30 seconds because the characters have the IQ of a fucking water balloon.

Since WHEN has "Spongebob Squarepants" ever worried about things like "Consistency", or even a positive "Continuity" (with certain exceptions) for THAT matter?!

Come on, not every episode is a shaggy dog story.

And besides if they were really french people they would have screamed like little girls until it snapped itself in a trap, then they would have chopped it up and cooked it into the soup.

Lies, true French People can only do one thing, and that's using this

  4. People point to Patty Gadget but I think this is easily the best s5 short, as SpongeBob going crazy over tge plate fits the format as it doesnt overstay its welcome, thus allowing for the antics to stay funny. From him going to dishwashing to cleanliness warfare (that is infinitely better than Battle of Bikini Bottom's) was great, especially with moments like him driving through the safety poster and everything with Krabs in it was perfection. The flashback and the endings parallels with the KK destroyed were great and made the "come here you!" bit impactful as a closing line.

    9.5/10

Just when I thought reviewing can't get any better than Lumoshi I find this masterpiece of a review.

I love how he says adult humor is gone despite there being a suicide joke within the first minute.

  6. I have two that encapsulate the twitter community well enough

Firstly not an episode but this is easily the worst thing I've read

    https://twitter.com/Kemdizzzle/status/1024341894250328064

Of all the main reasons, a high pitched voice which wasn't there, forgetting the actual humor while also treating humor like it's the only thing SpongeBob can do, and saying there's filler, I just cant. The only thing he's right on is that side characters werent used but why the heck should I care?

    Secondly: https://twitter.com/SandalsFish/status/957247314371866624

First off they ignore the fact that Krabs is greedy and has never lost setting up cockiness, and secondly if that's bad then A TON OF EPISODES ARE WORSE! Dying For Pie? Who the fuck makes bombs like pies? Pizza Delivery? The ending can render the rest pointless since it was that close. Shanghaied? The Dutchman didn't have to drop his anchor there in the first place.

I can go on and on about stupid stuff but it makes the episode funny since it's just an animated comedy. A lot of "plot devices" can be found in SpongeBob only if you nitpick the hell out of everything!

Then in the comments of the tweet they agree on WttCB having no comedy which just makes me think theyre trying to be edgy and havent watched anything, but you never know with Poe's Law so I'll take it as them being fully honest and just wannabe tryhards.

  7. SpongeBob and Pat were far dumber than necessary but....for once it oddly works. Fighting with the appliances was neat and some jokes like the seppuku bit were great. This will be one of my guilty pleasures of the series as I usually hate their stupidity and acknowledge how irritating it could be, byt all I can say is that here it just works.

The pacing was yet again an issue. Did they really need the trucker gag? Nah, that coulda been scrapped. Besides that I don't have really too many issues, but there wasn't too much of a positive in it either, as the nature patty only tasted good for Patrick then just won for the heck of it, and well, the whole thing was predictable, it was sorta like Runaway roadtrip, Pizza Delivery, and Club SpongeBob got combined into a weird mixture which I'm not sure on yet. For now I'll be generous and give it a 7/10 because there were a few good gags, and the animation and expressions were a good touch.

I was too nice. All the things I mentioned with the expressions and being a weird combo of other episodes didnt execute like those ones did, and the ending was so half-assed there's no way it makes sense. Some of the animation was nice, but that's all I got for 9b's second worst episode.
