Yeah that trailer sold me.  I'm definitely down for something different and Aubrey Plaza?

Deffo. I'm kind of getting Spring Breakers vibes from it, though, and it's making me a bit cautious, but man the trailer just looks so slick.

that Riverdale episode last night? wew.

I started off watching this show as a so bad so good soap opera version of Archie but I really ended up loving it unironically oops?

Thank you so much for spoiler tagging that, my girlfriend and I are a few episodes behind so I have no idea what the hell's going down. Whenever we watch iZombie and a Riverdale teaser pops up I have to mute her iPad and slam the screen down so we don't get spoiled. But yes, I think I also unironically love it at this point as well.

Oh hey I read about Ingrid Goes West online a few weeks ago.  Sounds really good?

Yeah, and the trailer's fucking bananas. Very excited for something weird.

What movies are you looking forward to this summer box office season?

King Arthur, Baby Driver, The Big Sick, A Ghost Story, Valerian, Atomic Blonde, Ingrid Goes West, Captain Underpants, Despicable Me 3... uh... probably some others I forgot about. I haven't been tracking things too heavily.

  4. See, what gets me is that this isn't even something, like, "Tom and Jerry sneak into Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory after hours and get all mixed up! Hilarious!", or even a fully committed Willy Wonka parody where there's, like, some sort of amazing animal food factory and whoever finds the golden tickets inside specific bags of animal food get to take a tour and there's a cat version of Willy Wonka and the kids are different types of animals and then go from there. What gets me irrationally angry is that, judging from the trailer, this is straight-up Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It's either an A-plot or a B-plot, but that plot is clearly just moving right along just fine without Tom and Jerry being there, and they're just kind of wandering around and doing things for no good reason. Are you kidding?

I just thought characters letting a child predator loose felt so damn wrong?

Yeah, that was weird. Like I said, I hope they revisit it in season 2 so they can actually do something decent with it instead of it just being this weird thing that happened for seemingly no reason. I didn't think the conflict of if Archie was going to tell the authorities about July 4th was interesting at all and I couldn't tell if the writers wanted the viewer to be invested in what was going on between them or if they wanted us to be super skeeved out.

Is the acting in Riverdale decent besides Cole Sprouse? :P

I'd say it's at least passable, if you go in knowing it's going to be ridiculous. KJ Apa might be a weak link, but I don't fault that on him so much as I fault the writers for not giving Archie any material to work with. Everyone else is rock solid, though.

did you hate how the whole Ms. Grundy story arc was executed in first 4 episodes because It didn't contribute to anything and the way it ended pissed me off. I really think that was one part of the show that I legit hated?

I wouldn't say it contributed nothing, but yeah, I wasn't a huge fan. I love Reggie (I think it was Reggie - may have been Moose or just a random jock) going "HEY ARCHIE! TAP ANY OF THAT COUGAR ASS THIS SUMMER?!" though, so I can't completely hate it. I hope it comes back around next season and has more ramifications, because as of now it just kinda, like, ended, and Archie's been treading water ever since.

aside from Archie's dad kind of, all adults in the show are messed up people and I hate most of them so much but that's pretty much the intention anyway to show how the kids have fucked up situations but really aside from them, Cheryl is also a character I should hate but unlike adults, she's just too funny and charming, I love her. Whenever she's on screen, she steals the show.

I totally agree that women in the show are the highlight, especially Cheryl?

I'm inclined to agree about the parents, but I actually really love how this plot is sort of a two-generation thing. You have these parents that are all connected to each other somehow - whether they went to school together or through Hiram screwing everyone or being in business together or what have you - and they're all trying to deal with their own shit, and it just escalates and escalates until it comes to a breaking point where they're basically all suspects in Jason's murder and it trickles down into the kids lives (because Jason, you know, got killed) and now all the kids are dealing with the repercussions of this. It sort of makes everyone an important piece of the puzzle, which I enjoy a lot because it means there's very little wasted screentime (and, ironically enough, Archie typically is the one that gets all of it).

But yeah, aside from Archie's dad I don't feel like any of the guys are real standouts. Kevin's kind of getting there, but he needs to do something other than be the gay friend. Jughead's dad is great when he's on screen too, but he's a deadbeat so it's hard to put him in the "highlight of the show" category. The women are kind of killing it on all fronts. I think Ethel might be my least favorite of the bunch, but even she's being weirdly interesting/interestingly weird.

  8. Honestly really bummed out and disappointed. I loved the books so much, and I wanted to love this so much, and I just can't get into it. I don't think I made it past the second episode. I thought the style that they decided to go for was really all wrong and it just consistently took me out of the show. Lemony Snicket is already there to break the fourth wall and intermittently break the immersion - I didn't think it was necessary to be constantly beaten over the head with the "THIS IS A STORY" motif by having the style of the show be like a stage play/picture book. I thought NPH was surprisingly terrible as well - it felt like he was playing Barney from HIMYM doing a play from his Playbook called "The Count Olaf" rather than him actually being Count Olaf. Patrick Warburton was fine, I guess, like he didn't do anything wrong in the episodes I saw, but he's not exactly what I picture when I think of Lemony Snicket, so that was just kinda weird because they basically nailed the look for everyone but him (but I guess since he's never physically described in the book [to my knowledge] they had the freedom to do whatever, I just personally pictured him as more slender, less good-looking, a bit younger, and with a much less commanding voice).

Might give it another try later on, but... eh. No real desire to, unfortunately.

Gimme a couple weeks. Gotta get through finals first.

Oh yeah I really caught up with Riverdale and I shouldn't love it but I love it?

IT'S SO GOOD. Ugh. Girlfriend and I still gotta watch the latest episode, but it's just amazing. I think Cheryl is making the show right now - she gets all the best lines and she's just so absurdly over-the-top. I remember there was one scene a few episodes ago where two characters were just talking in a room (it may have been Sheriff Keller and someone else, but I can't remember) and she just fucking walked out from behind a corner already saying her line and my girlfriend and I had to pause the show because we thought it was so damn funny to just imagine Cheryl waiting behind a corner for her moment doing nothing but preparing herself to walk into the conversation. Too great. Only a couple episodes left in the season, too, and I'm eager to see how they resolve this plot and where they decide to go from here for season 2.

  10. The best show on The CW, Everything is so amazingly terrible. Right now I can't tell if I enjoy it on a "so bad it's good" level or if I genuinely love it, but it's just so fun to watch. I think what makes it so enjoyable is that the showrunner is also the head editor at Archie Comics, and he's getting the cheesiness he's able to get here is totally in-line with what people think of when they think of Archie comics. The guy also wrote/is writing this super amazing Archie horror comic called Afterlife with Archie, so the show plays to his strengths when it comes to the eerie murder mystery side of things. One kind of odd thing though is that Archie is really a non-factor in this whole show, which I think is an interesting narrative decision because when you think of Riverdale and these characters you think of Archie leading the pack, but when it comes to the murder mystery plot (which is basically driving the show) he's almost always in the wrong or Betty and Jughead just shove him out as soon as they can, and he just goes back to focusing on his music. I hope he ends up getting meatier material down the line, because after all at the end of the day he's still Archie with a capital A, and it's weird to see the main guy get pushed aside (especially because I don't think KJ Apa is doing a particularly poor job and I'd like to see him do something substantial and important).

I think all the girls are currently the best part of the show, specifically Veronica and Cheryl. Veronica I think just gets some of the best material to work with and the actress is actually not super terrible, which helps a lot, and I really like how they're characterizing her, and Cheryl is just so deliciously over-the-top that I can't help but love everything she says and does.

Mentioned this in my Ask thread, but I sincerely do not like Jughead. I want to so much because I think what they're doing with him is really interesting and his personality is just a nice breath of fresh air, both in the show and in the comics, but I think Cole Sprouse is just such a bad actor, and I don't think he can believably pull off that heavy noir-style narration that he does.

But yeah. Overall super great show. Highly, highly recommend.

Yeah I'm not on board the Peyton/Blaine ship at all?

I thought it was interesting when they were first hooking up, because Peyton didn't know who he was and he was being a total sociopath about it, but now... ugh. Just because his memories got wiped doesn't suddenly also wipe away all those murders he committed. This shouldn't be treated as a clean slate.

It was more setup than anything but still pretty compelling? (The Ravi/Peyton/Blaine love triangle hasn't gone away and is still stupid, however)

Groan. Peyton should be smarter than that.

While we're on the subject of CW shows, I'm happy that new episodes of iZombie are back in my life?

I haven't been able to catch the premiere yet - without any spoilers, is it still amazing?

I haven't been. Would you recommend it?

Highly. I think there's only 8 episodes in this season too, so when it ends (tomorrow) you can binge it all pretty easily. Really great writing and a really good look at the underbelly of stand-up, as well as a good exploration of doe-eyed Pete dealing with the real world. Definitely watch it if you're a fan of You Made it Weird?

Brad's a goat and I hope Scot/Jason never return after that shit they pulled with Alecia. Probst also hates them for being bitter at Aubry.

Brad might end up as a goat but he's at least doing something. He's like if Ken from last season did literally anything at all. He's not making any high-level plays or being absolutely outstanding, but he's doing something, which is more than basically anyone else is doing.

I'm not the only one who thinks Riverdale is so fascinatingly bad that it's entertaining the hell out of me?

It really is too good. I'm legitimately upset that Cole Sprouse can't act, though. Everyone else ranges from passable to great, but he really sticks out like a sore thumb, which just really bums me out because Jughead could be the best character on the show but he's just so bad. My girlfriend and I started playing a drinking game where we take a drink whenever he can't deliver his line believably.
