The SpongeBob Community Discord (SBC Chat) is an official chat server originally created by Mr. Dr. Professor Patrick and now owned by jjsthekid. It is based on the Discord chat platform. It was founded on June 28th, 2016, and was officially made a part of SBC on February 10th, 2018.

The SBC Discord was originally created for use with SpongeCraft, although it has expanded and become a successor to the aging SBC Xat, which was declared unofficial in January 2014, and which was later abandoned entirely in favor of Discord. With a steadily-increasing number of users, the Discord server has grown to become the main hub of socialization on SBC, with (as of January 6th, 2020) a total of 143 users and 4 bots (Robot Jones, MEE6, Starboard, and Rythm). As of January 12th, 2019, there are 4 chat categories, 1 voice category, and 1 archive category (check below for more details). Discord can run on various platforms, such as Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Alternatively, you can access Discord with the web app, available here. You used to be able to earn doubloons on the Discord, through Karen, but the feature was disabled in September 2018.

A recent screencap of the SBC Chat on July 31st, 2018.

The main channel for discussion and most things happening on the chat. This is the most commonly-used section, and most discussion goes here, including discussions pertaining to the site itself. After the locking of #resignationdiscussion, chat about the events of the Third SBC Renaissance is now allowed there.

#spongebob

A channel for discussing SpongeBob. It was created on September 19th, 2018, due to SpongeBob discussions clogging up #general and #tv-and-film.

#dapit

Originally named #nsfw, this channel was intended to be a subsection for more mature content. The channel had become a hotbed for confusion for new members as a result of its name indicating that more mature content was meant to go there. In truth, the channel is rarely used for sexually mature topics and is instead traditionally used to post selfies and memes. The current pinned message reads as follows:

"ATTENTION: The NSFW channel is here for slightly more mature content that doesn't fit the general discussion thread as this Discord functions first and foremost a chatbox for a SpongeBob forum; the nature of the discussions had in the general discussion channel should be a reflection of the nature of our community. Conversations revolving around mature content will be directed here."

The channel originally gained much controversy due to sexually-explicit conversations between minors and adults occurring, which has lead to a shift in the channel's focus. The channel was renamed from "#nsfw" to its current on October 14, 2018.

#davent

The channel for venting and discussing personal issues happening in your life.

#robot-pirate-island

A channel created for checking message rank levels. You can check your rank by using the "!rank" command.

#starboard

The channel used for the Discord’s starboard. The starboard is a list of posts that were reacted to with a star 6+ times, which is used on posts that people like.

#da-art

A channel for posting drawings and art. It was added due to most members' art being posted in #dapit.

#music

A channel for discussing music and sharing music. #music also has its own voice channel, discussed more in depth below.

#vidyagames

#politics

A channel used to discuss political news and topics. It was created on April 10, 2019 due to the high amount of political discussion happening in #general at the time.

#spongecraft

This channel was used for discussion of SpongeCraft, as well as for chat via the SpongeCraft bot. It was created on August 13th, 2018 due to the Discord deciding that SpongeCraft chat via the SpongeCraft bot should be in its own separate channel, instead of clogging up #general. It was temporarily read-only in September 2018 due to faulty SpongeCraft upgrade tests. After SpongeCraft shut down on September 19th, 2019, the channel was briefly shitposting focused, before being archived on December 27th, 2019.

#pokemanz

The channel for using the Pokecord bot, which was added by popular demand. The channel name was coined by sbl. It was closed and archived on February 12, 2019, due to lack of activity.

#gcaceremony

This channel was used for the GCAs, during December 2018. Winners were announced by Patty Sponge, the host. It was used again during December 2019, where winners were announced by LocalAquatic, the host.

#atfinale

A channel used to discuss and watch the Adventure Time finale. It was created on September 3rd, 2018, the day of the finale. It has since been moved to the archives category.

#trash

After complains about the sexual nature of the NSFW channel, the #trash channel was instated as a channel for spam, Doubloons are not gained for posting in #trash, as it is seen as a channel used for miscellaneous content. The channel name was coined by sbl. It was closed and archived on October 14, 2018.

#sbc-games

Due to issues regarding the current shutdown of SpongeBob Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Dunces and Dragons, and SBC Music, the #jeopardy channel was created on August 17th, 2018. On August 18th, 2018, #jeopardy was renamed to #duncesanddragons for the Dunces and Dragons game that would take place later in the day. On August 25th, 2018, the channel was renamed to #sbc-games. At the current time, Jeopardy and DnD will take place on this Discord channel. It was made read-only and archived on September 16th, 2018, due to the new game rooms having been finished.

#doubloons

A channel created for checking your saved doubloon balance. You can check your balance by using Karen's "k!amount" command. It was closed and archived on September 24th, 2018, due to the doubloon commands no longer working.

#resignationdiscussion

A channel that was used for temporary discussion of the Third SBC Renaissance. It has since then been made read-only, except for occasional updates about the situation. It has also been moved to the archives category.

The two channels below were deleted instead of archived, and are now sadly lost forever.

#insects

A joke text channel used to post pictures of insects. It was deleted due to lack of activity.

#kpop

A text channel used to discuss Kpop. It was deleted due to it being redundant after #music became a discussion channel.
