    SBC's Top 50 Best Episodes Ever 2018!

I suppose I should clarify for commentators that I would prefer you to have your commentary ready the day before the episode is set to debut on the list. I plan to post these first thing in the morning, so having the commentary ready before then would be most beneficial to everyone to make sure things go smoothly. Sorry if this wasn't clear! And if you are having trouble meeting the deadline, you can still send your commentary to me after the episode is posted and I will edit it in. With all THAT said... 45. "Looks like we're going to start our training now, ladies! I call you a lady to humiliate and demean you. It's a motivational tool we coaches use." The Great Snail Race, 69 points (5 of 32 lists. Highest Ranking: #5, SOF) http://spongebob.wikia.com/wiki/The_Great_Snail_Race SOF: Ah, Great Snail Race, one of my favorite episodes from s3. I remember how it has divided fans for a while. I even remember choosing this episode for the reboot version of SBC's Weekly Episode Club. Honestly, i wouldn't understand why some users hated it back then. Okay, I get why they hated it b/c of SB pushing Gary too hard on him, but to me I'm perfectly fine with it. There are lots of good funny jokes i liked such as Squidward's last name misspelling, Patrick having his rock entered the race was a funny & bizarre moment. the animation is still good in terms of s3. Overall, I really enjoyed this Gary episode personally.

    46. "The kitchen is no place for a live horse!" My Pretty Seahorse, 69 points (4 of 32 lists. Highest Ranking: #2, jjs) http://spongebob.wikia.com/wiki/My_Pretty_Seahorse OWM: The characterization here is absolutely legendary. My favorite here has to be Patrick. He takes no part in the action, but those intermittent cameos he has all throughout the episode are completely golden. Mystery is great too. I love her cute relationship with SpongeBob and how her appetite escalates from flowers, then to Krabby Patties, and then to basically everything in the kitchen. Even Squidward has a lot to offer. I love his quote about ordering, cooking and getting food. “We do that for forty years, and then we die.” The bowl of onions gag combined with his growing confusion is awesome too. As for the humor, it’s what pushes this episode into classic territory for me. My favorite long-format joke here has to be Mr. Krabs’ story about his dollar. It’s so boring and mundane, but he feels so emotionally connected to it that it ends up becoming really sad. As for some shorter ones, I love the coin slot gag, the bowl of onions (combined with Squidward’s growing confusion it’s even more golden), and “Just get out of here, you stupid dumb animal!” And finally, the ending is perfect. Not only is it absolutely hilarious, but it’s also a neat way to bookend the episode, considering it both starts and ends with him. jjs: My Pretty Seahorse is an interesting episode, because it's one I didn't love as much as I do until recently. For the longest time I always slept on this one, but after a rewatch, I love it so much. This is currently my #2 most loved episode. The premise is an adorable one, with a fantastic execution to follow. SpongeBob's plight to keep Mystery is truly interesting, emotional, entertaining and shows how SpongeBob always had his heart in the right place in the pre-movie era when it came to helping others, even if he was a bit naive to what would go on around. To be honest, I'd even go as far as to say this is one of the pre-movie episodes with the strongest characterizations of SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs. Mr. Krabs isn't really "mean" here, as he does sympathize with SpongeBob when he loses Mystery, which is arguably one of the last times we see that fatherly bond Mr. Krabs has with SpongeBob at times. SpongeBob's farewell to Mystery really hit me hard though, considering I've had to say farewell to quite a few pets of mine over the years. I kinda spiritually related to SpongeBob in that regard, making me sympathize with him a lot more and finding this episode really relatable. Mystery was an entertaining one-off animal character too, providing for some funny antics in the episode. Speaking of, there are so many fantastic gags in this one, such as: the "kiddy ride", the bowl of onions, the random ending with Patrick trying to get into the hat store, this, Mr. Krabs' story, "that was terrible", Mystery eating Old Man Jenkins, Squidward's "we do that for 40 years and then we die" monologue...man, there are so many amazing gags in this episode. Overall, a fantastic ride from start to finish for me, and this is an episode I keep coming back to because it has so much replay value for me.

    47. "Grievances? This town is a grievance! There should be a law against so many stuck-up tightwads living in one place. This city needs to be destroyed!... or at least painted a different color." Squidville, 66 points (7 of 32 lists. 1 #1 vote - Wendy the Witch) http://spongebob.wikia.com/wiki/Squidville Wumbo: When I made my best list back in 2015, which I then also re-used for 2016, Squidville was the last episode I had to cut. And it was a difficult one for sure because I absolutely love this episode and what it does for Squidward's character. Fast-forward three years later, and I realize it's so good that, yes, it does deserve a spot on my list. For the majority of the series, Squidward is the butt-monkey, however deserving it is from episode to episode. He is the perfect foil to SpongeBob's optimism and relentless cheer, and this relationship gets him in trouble a majority of the time. So what would happen if we actually moved Squidward away from his foil? It's not teased and then spoiled like in Opposite Day; it actually happens as he moves into his supposed paradise, Tentacle Acres. Where there are no pineapples in sight and Squidward can finally live the life he wants to live. But is it the life he wants to live? That's what this episode asks, and the answer we get is that Squidward, whether he knows it or not, needs that excitement SpongeBob brings into his life to stave off the monotony of a life he would have otherwise. This is brilliantly shown through a montage of Squidward going through the motions in Tentacle Acres and becoming less and less enthused about it as the days go by. Quite possibly one of my favourite moments in the series there; such a simple melancholic concept. This ends with him playing with a reef blower, the exact reason he moved away from SpongeBob and Patrick in the first place, proving that he needs the excitement and even childish fun they give his life. Speaking of SpongeBob and Patrick, they deserve an aside here for being consistently funny throughout this episode. It's good to cut to them every so often so we don't get variations on Squidward's character for the rest of the episode. and their exploration of Tentacle Acres looking for their neighbour is a great series of dumb jokes to cap off their arc. Overall, I appreciate the comic sensibilities of this episode as well as the deep exploration of Squidward's psyche it provides us. Definitely a top tier episode for me. Hayden: Our episode begins with reef blower shenanigans, a nice tie-in to the episode which was the first of Squidward's adventures as Spongebob's neighbor. The episode's premise has Squidward in his own personal heaven, a culturally isolated community where nobody different is allowed. (Oh my). What's great is that Squidward's eyes are opened entirely on his own, and not through Spongebob/Patrick's quest to get him back. Speaking of them, they feel sympathetic here and Patrick manages to get out zinger after zinger. "I hate this channel". "Are you Squidward now?". "That's ok, take your time". In the end, Squidward trolling his kind is kind of like him trolling and laughing at himself, which is always the best kind of Squidward.

Kind of strikes me as Meghan Trainor were she more talented, melodic and self-aware. So, pretty good. Feel like it would wear out on me if I heard it too much though.

    48. "Wait, I don't understand this. I feel all tingly inside! Should we stop?" F.U.N., 65 points (7 of 32 lists. Highest Ranking: #8, Steel) http://spongebob.wikia.com/wiki/F.U.N. Clappy: I think I was asked to comment on this same episode two or three years ago and why I love it so much. Well I could just copy and paste exactly what I said last time, but where’s the F.U.N. in that? This episode introduced another layer to this show to me. You see at the time, I liked the series but I was still waiting for that one episode that would make me fall in love with it. Enter this one. The moment SpongeBob started to question whether Plankton has any real friends and his determination to show him the meaning of true friendship added a whole other layer to this series. It showed me that Plankton has other dimensions to him than being the series main antagonist. But that’s just one of the many things I love about this episode. The dynamic between SpongeBob and Plankton is simply adorable. Even with the obvious reveal that Plankton just befriended SpongeBob to get to the krabby patty formula, every moment these two spent together was golden. From the lessons in jellyfishing to the iconic F.U.N. song, these two just carried this episode for me. Not to mention that Mr. Krabs role in this episode is just as good. Overall, this is my favorite Season 1 Episode. Of course I would love to see this episode higher but the fact that this placed at all especially in an ultra competitive year makes me happy. Hayden: F.U.N. lays the groundwork for very important character relationships, even if it only scratches the surface with them. Spongebob is often used as the bridge between Plankton and Mr. Krabs, and while I've given up any hope of the series meaningfully resolving that triangle in a fair way to Plankton, it's nice to see Plankton's redemptive side in the instances the show allows it. There are many things the episode does right despite the simple progression of Plankton's arc: -The chase scene is one incredible visual gag after another. -The empathy Spongebob feels after being celebrated for kicking down someone's spirits is relatable. -It gave our SBC SOF8 store the Jolly Good Rookie Donut item. -Plankton's exaggeratedly genocidal version of what the initials of F.U.N. stand for. Plus the clams singing along. -A handful of popcorn being enough to get Bubble Bass to jump off Plankton. Spongebob liking sequels. -The other moviegoers running off with the possessions despite Krabs not instructing that. -"No friendship can withstand the allure of a Krabby Patty" being some sad (intentional?) foreshadowing. Really the only hiccups are that they use Karen as the motivating force to get Plankton back on his mission and that the episode seems to go for the moral of "some people are just destined to be bad" instead of exploring why Plankton is the way he is.

    49. "This isn't your average everyday darkness. This is... advanced darkness." Rock Bottom, 65 points (6 of 32 lists. Highest Ranking: #9, jjs) http://spongebob.wikia.com/wiki/Rock_Bottom jjs: Rock Bottom has always been one of my favorites for the longest time, ever since I was a wee lad. And this time it's in my top 10 episodes of all time, right at #9. Rock Bottom was a rather ambitious episode for Season 1. The reasons I love this episode so much are because of its adventure style, allowing us to explore a cool new location with SpongeBob himself. Rock Bottom itself is a unique, creepy and amusing location all at once, giving us not just a nice scenery, but allowing lots of humor to shine through it. The location itself is nice, but it's not simply fluff to distract you with, as the humor and characterization is not lost here. There's a lot of funny moments in here, but I'll list off my particular favorites: The bus gag with the vending machine always cracked me up, the "I *rasp* can't *rasp* understand *rasp* your *rasp* accent!" conversation, the 329 family while SpongeBob is in line, and the ending with Patrick. I also like how this episode introduces us to Glove World, as while it's minor in the episode, it still does nice world building for a location we'd see more often come the post movie era. While I know this one might be a bit overlooked by many, I honestly still enjoy everything about it. Needless to say, I was very happy and surprised when Rock Bottom itself reappeared in "Out of the Picture" come Season 10, as this episode is truly one worth calling back to. Honest Slug: As great as season 1 was, it's hard to deny that it felt like a proving ground for what was to come. The comedic principles introduced in the first season only got better with 2 and 3, making for episodes like SpongeBob Meets the Strangler that really perfected the show's humorous sensibilities. However one thing that the first season has that no other season does is a sense of atmosphere and charm, something that makes Rock Bottom a really special episode. This episode is really funny on its own, from the bus that really has it out for SpongeBob to all the oddities of this strange new location such as their accents. The humor is enough to make this a superb episode. On top of that you add in the new location of Rock Bottom which provides a great contrast to the bright and cheerful atmosphere the show usually has which helps creates more tension and intrigue than the norm. I really love all the creature designs they throw in and while there is a good amount of fun, goofy humor, they also know when a scene should be played straight enough to add some suspense. They do throw in some really funny jokes (Such as the advanced darkness gag) but they never take away from the story by going overboard. Over all this is a masterpiece of season 1, and in my opinion is the best episode of the season.
