Ron
The space elevator has been a concept for quite some time now, but it's finally getting done. It will serve as a sort of city in space, and an alternative to rockets to getting materials up out of earth. Using technology and new scientific developments I can't even begin to comprehend, this elevator will poke out of into space and will be used to transport loads of stuff to the stars. Using a giant counterweight (what you see in the picture) that also serves as a base, new types of spaceships (they're currently developing giant spacecraft that would be able to support people living inside them; they'd have gravity, too) could dock at these space elevators and pick up supplies (food, materials, etc.). In the future, they're planning on building many of these across the surface of Earth, as well as several on the Moon. These will play an instrumental role in future space habitation (we already have several space airlines preparing to take passengers into space). TJ
I've known about this for centuries now, didn't think it would be ready for ages, but it seems to be coming along nicely .
Wumbo
Interesting. It's great to hear another step forward in the name of science.
William Leonard
I always loved the concept, and I wish this project luck.
crushingmayhem
I always liked the idea of building an elevator to space. It would cost billions of dollars but we might see it by the end of the century.
SG19
"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Definitely looks like a technological breakthrough and I don't think anything could go wrong if heat-insulated material was used for the elevator. Actually, their goal is to have it up and running within the next 20-50 years.
Guest ssj4gogita4
What a view from the top this would be. Even though I hate heights...I would totally do this.
Macseed
How long would the elevator take? Like a second, or a few minutes, or a few days...

crushingmayhem
How long would the elevator take? Like a second, or a few minutes, or a few days... If it's a high speed elevator, i'm guessing a few minutes.
