Another world... another time... in the age of wonder...

Another world... another time... This land was green and good.

Until the Forge cracked.

Since it launched in July 2023, SpongeCraft Frontiers has been SBC's most expansive gaming offering, and seen several major updates in that time. The most consequential of them was the addition of Spongecraftia, the world of SpongeCraft Classic, which has captured players' imaginations all over again in its new life. Since then, SCF has drifted farther from its original vanilla survival vision, and back towards SpongeCraft's roots as a massive creative sandbox. It's time that we embraced this shift once and for all, and sunset the era of Frontiers by introducing a brand new experience to SBC's great Minecraft continent.

Over the last week, some of you on Discord may have noticed us server ops performing maintenance work on SCF. I'm excited to finally be able to bring to all of you the results of our labor: SpongeCraft Forge!

For those of you that are unfamiliar, Forge is a long-standing Minecraft API and mod loader, and a way for the community to introduce many varieties of addons to the game. SpongeCraft Forge is the new name for both the revamped server and the new custom modded client you'll need in order to play it, featuring more than 300 addons' worth of Minecraft quality-of-life improvements and new content. Some of the highlights:

*Distant Horizons is a long-range draw distance mod that may cause significant performance issues. If you face major lag in-game, I suggest this as the first mod to turn down or disable outright.

Unfortunately, in this conversion, we have to say goodbye to Frontiers's world of Overlandia. This was not by choice, and is the result of the inherent incompatibility between Forge and our previous server software, Bukkit. Our previous multi-world system was powered by the Bukkit plugin Multiverse, which has no viable alternative for Forge servers, and our efforts to try and retain Multiverse using a hybrid server software (Arclight) created many more problems than it solved. Therefore, since Spongecraftia remains the more popular between the two, we made the decision to discontinue Overlandia as an active map on the server. It will be archived elsewhere for download very soon.

DOWNLOAD & SETUP

SPONGECRAFT FORGE CLIENT | FREESM LAUNCHER

Once you've downloaded both:

  1. Install Freesm Launcher. When the setup prompts you to add an account, you have two options: add a Microsoft account (if you've bought the game), or an "offline" one (if you haven't).
  2. In the top left corner, click "Add Instance".
  3. Go to "Import", click "Browse", and select the SpongeCraft Forge client's zip file.
  4. Click OK and let the importer handle the rest.
  5. Launch the game from the newly-added icon within the launcher.
  6. As usual, when the game has launched, navigate to the Multiplayer tab, and the server will already be bookmarked.
  7. ?????
  8. PROFIT!

If you were in Overlandia when you last signed off from the server, it may place you in a random spot when you log in. Use the classic directory command (/warp directory) to return to the GSC.

Be warned that some of you may experience severe lag here compared to Frontiers. This is an unavoidable effect of extensive Forge modding, despite our inclusion of optimizations, and can only be mitigated by lowering settings in both Minecraft itself and across mods. As stated above, I would recommend tweaking Distant Horizons first.

SPONGECRAFT FORGE RELEASE 1.1

Mod pack updates are probably going to be an ongoing thing for SC Forge, and this is the first of them. During each update, the main download link for the client in the OP will be updated to the latest version. Current players have the option of deciding whether to import the update as an entirely new instance, or manually add/remove content in their existing instance to match the updates (this method will allow players to keep their current configured settings).

Those of you who've played on SC before are all familiar with the Grand Spongecraftia Directory, the world spawn point that houses the many portals to points of interest across SC. The Waystones mod allows us to take a new approach to traveling the map: simply right-click on a Waystone, look in the list for the place you want to teleport to, click on it, and you'll be sent to another Waystone at that location! This not only makes it possible to travel directly between places without going through the Directory, but also streamlines the process by adding an accessible, text-searchable list of points - no more having to slowly poke around the Directory to find the one portal you want.

Obviously, the Directory isn't being fully retired, and we'll continue to add legacy portals for new places, for those of you who still prefer the old method of travel. The "/warp directory" command will also remain active. That being said, we're toying with putting the Directory in the background and transferring the world spawn to a newly-created space. Where will that be? Stay tuned to find out!

SPONGECRAFT FORGE RELEASE 1.2

For some background on how the SCF mod pack got its origins: it started as a fork of SeguinRise, a survival mod pack which some friends and I were testing throughout most of January. I kept almost all of it under the assumption that we would be able to carry our dual world system over from Frontiers, but now that we've gone back to pure creative, many of these mods are no longer relevant to our use case on SCF. Therefore, since we're seeing RAM usage become a major issue on the players' end, survival-oriented mods will be the first to go for optimization reasons.
