The mysterious cliffhanger in The Paper

In the episode "The Paper", Mr. Squidward is left without his clothes or house.

However, as we all know, Squiddy ends up getting his house and clothes back in following episodes without any explanation. As a casual viewer, I would like an explanation here, even if this may not be a big deal in the grand scheme. I am curious to know how he got both back off-screen. What are your theories? And did he ever get his sunscreen?

I've heard from a very reliable source on TV Tropes that there was going to be an episode titled "The Sunscreen" that serves as a sequel to "The Paper" that details a plot where Squidward tries to return to his original status quo, but it was ultimately scrapped due to "The Paper" being attached to a holiday episode, therefore the creative team decided that there was no point in writing an episode that connects to an unpaired segment since Nickelodeon would only allow to air "The Paper" on a seasonal basis, and Stephen Hillenburg was reported to have said that "The Sunscreen" was one of the worst scripts that he had ever foreseen.

Squidward built a new house himself. He chopped down a Coral tree to make a new house with all the furniture, and he shaved Sandy's fur to make a new shirt that was identical to his old one.
