Episode 225b Grandmum's the Word
Air-date: Febuary 16, 2018
Plot: Plankton's grandma is coming to Bikni Bottom, and he has to convince her he owns the Krusty Krab for her 90th birthday

Music: Earl's Revenge
Writer: Mr. Lawrence

If there ever was a character that would return to the series, I would never expect it would a one off who was ina forgettable Imitation Krabs rip off that people probably forgot existed. I don't even think we got this characters name in the episode. This was a risky move by Mr. Lawrence, as we don't have a firm attachment to the character, unlike say Bubble Bass or Man Ray. However, I am more than happy to say that Mr. Lawrence envisoned a genius idea that makes Plankton's grandma come back in a logical way, and the episode works out splendidly. Let's dive right in.

The episode opens up with Plankton giving Karen a spa bath. Plankton turns into a character named Rey Rey, and as he is about to kiss Karen, his grandma pops up on Karen's screen. Plankton quickly tries to get her away, as Plankton's grandma mentions she is coming to Bikini Bottom tomorrow. Taken aback, Plankton asks why she is coming, and she says that Plankton promised her that he would own the Krusty Krab by her 90th birthday. Plankton lies, and says he owns it, but immidietly regrets it, asking Karen how he can convince her. Karen is mad, and kicks Plankton out of the Chum Bucket.

Spongebob is twirling a sign outisde, and Plankton quickly tells him his problem. Spongebob believes him, but he is not sure if Krabs will. Krabs shows up, and Plankton tells him the story too, but Krabs does not buy it. Plankton has to use his sincere face, which means he is telling the truth. Krabs accepts it. He hides te formula in his stomach, and tells Spongebob and Squidward to make the Krusty Krab pro Plankton. We then get a fun scene of Spongebob and Squidward decorating, and they finish just as Grandma Plankton (who I will be calling as Lily from here on out) arries.

Plankton and Karen meet Lily, but she quickly insults Karen, making Karen leave for the rest of the episode. Plankton intoduces Lily to the inner workings of the Krusty Krab. She gets introduced to Mr. Krabs and Spongebob, and they quickly get to work (with some funny banter between Krabs and Plankton). She also meets Squidward, who she has an instant attraction too. Interesting devolpment, but it's really funny, so it's fine. Lily uses Squidward to chew a patty (gross out truly never left), and commends Plankton for a great experience.

Before she leaves, she wants a picture with the krabby patty secret formula. Plankton begs Krabs, and Krabs concedes. As the krusty krew is about to take the picture, Lily uses her purse to make a rocket, stealing the formula. Krabs questions Plankton, but Plankton says he did not know, but he quickly loves it, asking Lily if they will use the formula to rule together as a family. However, Lily has other plans, dropping Plankton to a ketchup packet below (clever). The gang are all regretful, as Lily makes it to Shady Shoals. She plots how she will rule the world with the formula in a fantasy (poor Squid), but falls asleep. Krabs and Plankton are there to steal the formula back, and Plankton wishes Lily happy birthday (awww).

This is hands down one of the smoothest stories this Season has offered. The only real bump I can see here is the sign gag, which goes 5 seconds too long. But that is such a minor criticsm, as the rest of the story is really great. The plot itself is so simple, and had been used before, yet they make the episode unpredctable and entertaining enough that it feels classic. I never noticed this until someone (McSponge) pointed it out, but the liar revealed trope is never used here. I think it's a very good thing, as I feel it would ruin the flow the episode has, and otherwise ruin Plankton's motivations if the two worked together to get the formula. The plot twist that Lily wants to steal the formula adds extra tension, and makes an awesome climax, along with Krabs and Planktons reactions. Oh yeah, it's also nice to see Krabs and Plankton have to work for a shared goal. We don't get this often enough, and it works fantasticly here.

If the story isn't good enough, this is one of the funniest of the Season. Small lines like Plankton calling Squidward a nobody, Plankton being Rey Rey, Krabs calling Lily "that hag with a bag", and Krabs, Plankon, and Spongebob's melodramatic scene near the end keep the episode consitantly amusing throughout. Obviously the best parts are when Lily falls in love with Squidward. It's such a genius plot twist, and it's absolutly hilarious here. It's such a plot twist, and yet it works out so well.

One reason why this episode was so ambitous is because well, Lily had no character in Grandmas Secret Recipe. She was used as a plot device in that episode, so the crew had full freedom to do whatever they wan with Lily here. And I think they got her a nice personality here. She is pretty tough here, and they add the fact that the Planktons are all very deceptive. Her love story with Squidward adds to her character, while making the episode really funny. Plankton, Krabs, Karen, and everyone else are how they should act, and are all in character and fun here.

As you can see, I think this episode is really good. It employs a classic story with enough Spongebob charm to work. While it is not the most original story out there, even for Spongebob, it takes it in a new and ambitious direction that makes this feel fresh and fun. This episode takes full advantage of Lily here, adding a personality, something that the awful predecsessor didn't, while keeping the episode entertaining and funny throughout. Honestly, this might be the first time in the Season that I felt like I was watching a Season 3 episode, I like this that much. Obviously this is the best episode of the I love Spongebob week (if anyone remembers that lol), and one of my favorites for the Season.

Uhhhh, sorry for the unintended absence. Laziness strikes again.

Episode 226a Doodle Dimension
Air-date: March 9, 2018
Plot: Spongebob and Patrick get trapped in a doodle dimension

Music: Arnold is back 1
Writer: Luke Brookishier

If Grandmum the Word is a display of the best of Season 11, with ambitous storytelling, the perfect balance of humor, visual and dialouge, and the best way to bring back a character long gone, than Doodle Dimension is the complete opposite. I tried to not let the hype cloud my opinions of this episode, yet everything done here is so lazily that this episode is a massive disappointment. Obviously I am not a fan of this episode, let's get into why that is.

The episode opens up with Spongebob and Patrick walking to Sandy's house. Sandy is working on some invention, and can not play with Spongebob and Patrick. Quick note here, this is such a lazy set up. Where is the artist at sea? Spongebob and Patrick fiddle with the controls, and accidently start the dimension. They get hypnotized, and go into the dimension, ignoring Sandy who says not to go into the dimension.

Spongebob and Patrick fall into a blank dimension. It seems endless, and the 2 can't do anything, until Spongebob realizes that marks make into drawings in this dimension. Another lazy plot point, Spongebob pulls out a big pencil, and he and Patrick start drawing. However, they soon feel sad and miss their friends, and Patrick randomly draws a doodlebob. Up to this point, the episode has been pretty terrible, I'd say around a 2/10, and this is halfway through. Thankfully it gets better around here, maybe it can bump this up to a meh.

Doodlebob quickly proves to be a threat to Spongebob and Patrick, kidnapping Patrick. Doodlebob draws a castle, and holds Patrick hostage. Spongebob gets there, and doodlebob catapaults Pat back to Spongebob. Doodlebob managed to draw a bunch of tiny doodlebobs, and they chase Sponge and Pat. Sponge and Pat use a balloon to escape, but when Doodlebob stands on the tiny doodlebobs, Spongebob hands the balloon to him, and doodlebobs float away. Spongebob draws a doodle sandy, who draws a dimension back to Bikini Bottom.

The first half of the episode is very tedious, things moved at a snails pace, and nothing is funny. The set up for how doodlebob comes into the episode is very lazily written. Sandy just randomly making a dimension machine sounds like a Season 8 contrivance, not something up to standard for the creativity shown throughout this Season. Doodlebob randomly appearing due to Patrick's stupidity also didn't amuse me a bit, though doodlebob himself is the only thing good about the episode. The fight itself wasn't that great, but at least the action scene is decent, and way better than how the episode starts.

I found nothing funny in the episode. The nut farmer guy joke seemed very like a stereotypical joke this show would do, not something that unexpected. After that, the episode wasn't trying hard at all to be funny. Patrick using his butt to push buttons was both a lazy joke, and a reminder that Patrick can be so obnoxious this Season. Nothing about the doodlebob stuff struck me as funny, and if there were any jokes there, they didn't make it obvious,

Spongebob and Patrick were pretty tedious in the beginning, but they improve when they reach the dimension. Even then, they aren't that interesting or entertaining in the episode, they kinda feel like things that doodlebob beats up. Doodlebob was fortunetly decent in here. He had some good moments here, and is easily the best part of the episode. Sandy is post movie/The Fishbowl boring scientist here, and it;s a shame, considering this is her biggest role in the Season so far.

There just is not much to say, the episode is just inferior to Frankendoodle. Every part of the episode is done better in the orginal, and this is proof that the crew should not pander to nostalgic fanboys. I doubt anyone was nostalgic for Plankton's grandma, and the episode is one of the most well recieved of the Season, so there is proof that you don't need well known characters to make good stories. As a whole, the episode is something very disappoiting, and it's a shame that this could have been one of the best of the Season.

Episode 226b Move Your Bubble Bass :funny:
Air-date: March 16, 2018
Plot: Spongebob and Patrick move Bubble Bass' stuff

Music: Cream Pie
Writer: Mr. Lawrence

Besides getting robbed of the best title of the series, Move Your Bubble Bass is a really interesting episode, besides being Bubble Bass' biggest role since Pickles, and being his next star episode since Pickles. I feel so conflicted, on one hand, this episode has some of the best humor of the Season, wether it be visual or audible. On the other hand, this episode is the embodiment of the bombastic visuals that 10 and 11 are known for. This episode has some of the best and worst qualities of post sequel, let's get right in.

The episode opens up rather well. We are shown Bubble Bass has his own T.V. show where he is interviewing a krabby patty. Bubble Bass says to the patty that it isn't as good as it usually is, and the patty says to ask Mr. Krabs for a refund. The 2 laugh at the joke, when we are back to the regular setting, which is Bubble Bass' moms basement. Bubble Bass' mom calls for Bubble Bass to do chores, but Bubble Bass doesn't want to, so his mom throws all the chores at him. This makes Bubble Bass want to leave, to the amusement of his mom.

Bubble Bass decides to find 2 "able bodied idiots" to move his belongings for him. Conviently, Spongebob and Patrick are horsing around near by, and accidently bump into Bubble Bass. Bubble Bass sees this as an oppurtunity to trick them. He tells the duo that he needs help escorting his goods to his grandmother's house, and says he will give a free lunch if Spongebob and Patrick help him. Patrick accepts right away, and the 2 start helping Bubble Bass. Bubble Bass breaks a stick to trick Spongebob and Patrick that he has a bad back, and tells the 2 they wll have to do it by themselves.

Spongebob and Patrick pack everything up in boxes, and leave (with literally the whole house). They get started on the road, and nearly bump into things. They go down a hill, and encounter a rich lady. Spongebob tries to tell her to go around, but she refuses, and tells them to back it up. The bag is way to heavy though, and tramples the rich lady, runs over stuff, almost runs over babies, and almost goes on the road, but Sponge and Pat stop it.

Spongebob focuses Patrick, and the 2 keep on going, but are stopped by babies, and pushed onto a lidge where they find Bubble Bass' grandma's house. They try to fit everything in, but the house gets destroyed. A guy comes there, and tells them they were at the wrong house, and that BB grandma's house is across the bridge. The guy explodes in rage, and Sponge and Pat cross the bridge. They get hiccups, babies and the lady cross the bridge, and they somehow get to the house. When they demand their lunch from Bubble Bass, he says he ate them. Spongrbob and Patrick get mad and leave, and Bubble Bass opens up a box, only to find his mom. His mom pushes him in a box around town, giving Bubble Bass comuppence.

I haven't expressed my thoughts on the animation in this episode, but yeah, it's something else. At times, the animation looks fine, but at other times, it's way too wacky, and even can come off as gross, especially some of Bubble Bass' movements. This is easily one of the most expressive episodes, and I can appreciate the visuals to a certain extent, it must have been a lot of fun to make, but why in this episode? It just seems like they put bombastic visuals for the sake of it, rather than actually use it to enhance the episode.

After that rant about the animation, the rest of the story is fine. Interesting way to set up Spongebob and Patrick moving stuff around town, but it works good here. At parts, the episode moves too fast with little logic, such as the stuff with the babies, but overall it does it's job. I guess at points it got too random and fast, such as with the rich lady, but overall the story is aight.

Now this is where I am conflicted. The episode has some truly hilarious moments. Bubble Bass talk show, heck anything with Bubble Bass, is a 10/10. Of course there is the "things are gonna get crazy" line as well, as well as Spongebob's little speech after (the soviet flag killed me). Of course there are some lazy jokes as well, I didn't find the scene with the rich lady or the babies all that amusing, but I still laughed at multiple points in this episode.

Characters are mostly fine here. Bubble Bass is perfect here, this is just something he would do. I like how they made him a loser in a basement, and am glad that they are adding to his character, as well as Bulletin Board and Squid Noir. Patrick is surprisingly decent here. Wasn't to thrilled about some of the gags of him wanting the sandwich, but he was good most of the time. No problems with Spongebob, and Bubble Bass' mom was a fine addition to the characther selection.

This episode has some great things and terrible things, it's amazing they are all jammed into one episode. While I find the comedy to be really good here, could have been one of the funniest of the Season, this is a case of animation dragging down an otherwise good episode. It's kinda sad too, with just normal animation (or a better name), this could have been something great, but as of right now, it is just ok.

Move Your Bubble Bass (I refuse to call it by the current title) was just ok. It could've done better (and, as stated up there, the animation in this episode could either look pretty good or just  plain weird) but I don't mind it too much.

Episode 227a High Sea Diving
Air-date: April 6th, 2018
Plot: Spongebob does high sea diving

Music: Hawaiian Spongebob Adventures Theme 2
Writer: Kaz

Considering what Kaz's next episode is going to be, this is a good reminder that Kaz can still pump out a good one once in awhile. And here we have an example of an episode that just works good in a way that I can't explain. The concept is something so....unique to Spongebob. The concept of sea diving is something so creative, I don't know if I would ever have come up with something so original myself. The episode also proves that Kaz can write something well when he tries, something he forgets to do in the next episode. But enough stalling, let's get into it.

The episode starts with a bang, as it begins at Spongebob's house, with a huge crowd cheering. Spongebob is going to be the first sponge to do a sea dive to the surface. Mr. Krabs is selling concessions at the front, and manages to sell Bubble Bass a "statue" of Patrick. Spongebob comes out, and attempts to do the sea dive, only for gravity to work, and Spongebob falls to the ground. The crowd leaves, and Spongebob questions why he didn't go up. Sandy mentions that you need gravity to go upwards, and Spongebob fethces some balloons to go up. It works, until he encounters a large trash island.

Spongebob begins exploring the trash island, when some trash heads his way, and than going down to the surface. Spongebob eventually finds out it's Old Man Jenkins (of all characters to put as a main character in an episode lol), and the 2 get into a fight. The trash lands in the sea below, and the Bikini Bottomites think it is gifts from Neptune. All around Bikini Bottom, it is shown how the Bikini Bottomites use the trash to help in their daily life. It is a nice message about recycling that doesn't get too forced (too bad this episode sucks cause it promotes littering).

Spongebob eventually manages to get some sense out of OMJ, who tells him that he got stranded here a year ago. Spongebob comes up with the idea to use the trash to become sort of like a bridge, and bring them both down. The Bikini Bottomites try to get up to the surface to ask for more gifts from Neptune, but eventually discover the bridge, and climb up. Spongebob puts the boat on the surface, being the first sponge to do that, and he and OMJ climb down. However the bridge shakes, and it turns out to be the Bikini Bottomites who want more gifts. They call Spongebob their hero, but the bridge collaspes. OMJ gets burnt by Neptune for imitating him, and Spongrbob rides on the back of Mr. krabs car, being happy that he got called a hero.

First off, the animation is good here. They could have made the trash island really disgusting, but instead they managed to make it look fine, and it adds to the episode, rather than make it drag down. The episode is kinda weird in the way that it almost has no story. It starts off with something and ends with something, but the middle is like a free for all of stuff that happens. I think the direction works for the episode, and it isn't that noticible unless you really notice it, but it is something worth noting. The pacing makes it almost feel clasic, and this is where i noticed that they turned down the expressions a little bit.

Humor is fine. Not a super funny episode, but it has some decent jokes. My favorite joke is OMJ calling the fishes idiots, and they call themselves idiots too. I am probably the only one who didn't really mind Krabs in the beginning. Could it have been shortened? Yeah, but I think it worked as a gag that they were going for, and it did make for a decent ending gag. I will say that the fish are pretty funny here. They don't go too far with the stupidity, and it brings the right balance. The ways they use the trash for everyday life is pretty amusing here.

Spongebob is a nice protaganist, and he is so likeable and fun here. The crew really nails his personality, and his arc, and him being so happy at the end, was genuinly sweet. Old Man Jenkins finally gets to have his own starring role, which is really strange, but he actually works here. Him pretending to be King Neptune is pretty funny, and he does a fine job being a good foil for Spongebob.

I overall like this, it's a pretty entertaining episode. It does mostly everything right, and i have little to complain about. It shows how they can still come up with creative concepts for episodes these days, and it it executed well here. The episode is pretty funny, the new starring role for Old Man Jenkins works pretty well, just a nice and pleasent episode from the Season.

Episode 227b Bottle Burglars
Air-date: April 13th, 2018
Plot: Spongebob and Squidward have to steal the formula back from Plankton

Music: Discovery
Writer: Luke Brookishier

Yeah this still exists. Seeing as season 11 is going to end next month, I see it fit to try and end these reviews on the day that the season ends. On to the episode, and this is a great episode. The plot of Spongebob and Squidward forming a heist to take back the formula from Plankton seems like a very unoriginal and bland premise. It has been done before, such as in Patty Caper. However, the episode is crafted in a way that makes this unique and interesting, creating a very different Plankton episode that manages to rank in among the best of the season.

The episode opens up with Spongebob and Squidward cleaning up Krabs' office. Krabs steps aside as Spongebob and Squidward have to clean the safe. Plankton walks up with his new invention that turns him invisible (which could be a unique episode idea in of itself), but the plan fails cause he can't see his own feet. Spongebob puts the bottle in a trashcan, and starts to clean the safe. Squidward throws the trash out, right onto Plankton, who siezes the oppurtunity to take the bottle, though cautious that this is a trap.

Later, Spongebob and Squidward are in Krabs office, but Spongebob notices that the bottle is missing. Squidward and Spongebob realize what happened, but can't find the bottle amongst the trash. They use the cameras to see that Plankton stole it. The 2 panic, but come up with a plan to sneak into the Chum Bucket and steal the formula back. Meanwhile, it is revealed that there is a timelock on the bottle, so it can only be opened tomorrow. Plankton stores the bottle in a safe for the night.

When night falls and Krabs is gone, Spongebob and Squidward waste no time to sneak into the Chum Bucket. They start sneaking around, and have many close calls with Plankton. They run into Spot, who wants to play with them, but Spongebob makes quick work of him. Karen grinds them up into chum, and they have to get past a giant eye, but eventually make it to the trap room. Squidward gets trashed by the booby traps, but the 2 make it to the safe. However, upon opening the safe, a rocket appears and blasts them up, revealing that it is morning, Spongebob comes clean to Krabs, who easily smacks through the Chum Bucket walls, and steals it back. In the morning, Plankton realizes he is foiled, and the episode ends on a gag about Spongebob and Squidward being the new security for the bottle.

The story isn't complicated at all, it does it's job well. The episode goes at a well paced speed, leaving room for a lot of things to happen, but not throw everything to the wall. The set up can be seen as slow, especially compared to the fast paced scenes in the Chum Bucket, but I believe that it is entertaining enough ti work well, even if the highlights are the parts in the Chum Bucket. The one complaint I have is that Krabs' just easily breaking out the formula is way too much of a deus x machina for my taste, but everything else works really well.

However, I think this is one of the funniest episodes of the season. The trap door scene ranks in among some of my favorite jokes for post sequel. They manage to put in some great slapstick, particularly the part where the Titanic just randomly falls. I also love how Plankton calls a horror film a comedy, and him not being able to see his legs cause of the invisibility machine (but that might be because Plankton is my favorite character). I also get a kick out of other things, like Krabs' rage towards the end, the dollar decreasing in value, and Squidward's closing line. There are a lot of jokes hear, wether they are more subtle or more obvious, I still think the comedy is the episodes selling point.

It's always great to get a Spongebob-Squidward team-up, and considering what Squidward will be put through in a few episodes, this reminds me of how to write Squidward properly. They work so well here, and easily make the episode very enjoyabe to watch. I also like that for once, Squidward actually cares about his job instead of being apethethic, and willingly works with Spongebob. Plankton is always fun, and while he doesn't take much time up on the episode, he does provide some fun, and the highlight for the characters is the return of Spot. I was so shocked the first time I watched this, but it is a great easter egg, and it isn't distracting from the story at hand.

I think this is a really great episode, my favorite of the ones that have been covered so far. So much of this works so well, it's a really funny episode, it manages to pull off a spectacular Spongebob and Squidward team up, all the characters are in character and fun throughout, and manages to be unique and fresh for a plot that has been done before in the series. I think this episode manages to find the right balance on how to function really well, and is one of the better episodes of post sequel.

So heh....it's been awhile. I stopped making reviews because school made me focus my time over there. So you guys probably think I am quitting this project.....

....but all my season 11 reviews are done. I rewrote all 50 of my reviews over winter break. But right now I face a problem. Do I start from the beginning again, since some of my opinions have changed considerably, or do I just continue after Bottle Burglars and finish the season that way? I mean, it would be a waste to write 30ish reviews for them not to reach the spotlight, but I am still deciding. I want feedback of preference if anyone still cares. The reviews won't include summary anymore, since that was the part I hated writing the most. It will be mostly analysis now. Reviews will start on Monday either way, with 2 reviews per day!

So here are my current and final opinions of Cave Dwelling Sponge-Bottle Burglars (where I left off). Most of the reviews still are the same, but some eps got a bit better or worse in my eyes.

Spoiler

Cave-Dwelling Sponge: 6/10 (It has decent jokes, but has sloppy structure and is forgettable)

The Clam Whisperer: 3/10 (The beginning is awful, and it is just a Jellyfish Jam rip off with no good jokes)

Spot Returns: 8/10 (How to do a returns episode right. Tells a solid story with good jokes, especially at the supermarket)

The Check-Up: 8/10 (More depth to Krabs' character, and some of the seasons funniest slapstick)

Spin the Bottle: 7/10 (Not an amazing episode, but it has some amusing jokes and Plankton is fun here)

There's a Sponge in My Soup: 9/10 (Some of post sequels best atmosphere, and is overall a fun and funny ride)

Man Ray Returns: 6/10 (I like the action and some of the jokes, but Spongebob and Patrick are a bit irritating)

Larry the Floor Manager: 7/10 (I like more Larry focused episodes, and this one is a bunch of fun)

The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom: 8/10 (Great animation and a well told story)

No Pictures, Please: 4/10 (Patrick carries ok, but the episode is boring and lame with a cop out twist)

Stuck on the Roof: 3/10 (More boring than NPP, with only animation as it's saving grace)

Krabby Patty Creature Feature: 7/10 (The horror parody works well, and it is a surprisingly unique episode)

Teacher's Pests: 8/10 (Plankton and Krabs bounce off of each other nicely, and has some of the seasons best jokes)

Sanitation Insanity: 7/10 (KBBB done competently, along with more Spongebob/Squidward team up)

Bunny Hunt: 4/10 (Mostly wacky and cheap jokes, but a few good jokes save it from absolute awfulness)

Squid Noir: 9/10 (Great parody with excellent characterization, and Squidward's best characterization in a long time)

Scavenger Pants: 7/10 (Solid Sponge/Pat/Squidward episode that manages to make itself different, even if Sponge and Pat were a bit obnoxious in the beginning)

Cuddle E. Hugs: 5/10 (Basically written story hiding behind trippy drug parallels)

Pat the Horse: 2/10 (Unironically really bad, but memes save this one. 4/10 with memes)

Chatterbox Gary: 7/10 (Episode feels relaxed and calm, and it overall works well)

Don't Feed the Clowns: 5/10 (This one exists to me)

Drive Happy: 7/10 (Besides Patrick's scene, the episode is fun and Coupe is a good antagonist)

Old Man Patrick: 4/10 (A boring Patrick episode that has no structure or stakes)

Fun-Sized Friends: 3/10 (Not bottom tier, but the episode has dangerous parallels to some 6/7 stories)

Grandmum's the Word: 8/10 (Unexpected surprise, but the episode is a lot of fun, and Lily manages to carry the story well)

Doodle Dimension: 4/10 (It is nothing compared to Frankendoodle, and has an annoying first half)

Moving Bubble Bass: 5/10 (Every scene with BB is great, but the rest is lame and obnoxious slapstick)

High Sea Diving: 7/10 (Cool concept, and it works out in an entertaining way, even if the jokes fall a bit short some of the time)

Bottle Burglars: 9/10 (Excellent role reversal with great slapstick and Spongebob/Squidward pairing)

My Leg

This episode is one of the most popular ones of season 11. I can't say I agree with the consensus that much. This one could have been great, but it has one fatal flaw. MY LEG, or some variation of it, gets yelled over 70 times in the episode. This tarnishes the gag for me. The episode has other great gags, and acctually has good characterization of Fred for his first episode, but that one flaw just drags this episode down so much. It's a big shame too. If the screaming was not there, or even toned down or muffled a little bit, I could see this episode going very far and being one of the seasons best.

The story is actually pretty original. It borrows some similarities to I Had an Accident, but it focuses more on preventing Fred’s leg to be away from harm than staying in a house to avoid harm. The crew definitely plays with Spongebob and Fred interacting. It starts off in the beginning with them knowing each other, but I mean this show has no continuity. The episodes second half focuses on breaking Fred’s leg, and it an actually interesting angle for the episode to go towards. Fred is always in agony when he breaks his leg, so it is cool to see he has something to look forward to at the hospital. The episode also has a another song, which is the highlight of the episode.

I love the ambulance running gag. There was also the "break" line, as well as some good visual gags, such as Nurse Bazooka being some muscular woman, Spongebob using a small toy hammer to break Fred's leg, and the girl scout beating up Patrick. That gag has some good variation at points. I also like the montage of the “my leg” clips in the beginning of the episode. If that was all the my leg gags there were, than I think that wouldn’t detract from the episode. But the constant repetition kills the gag, especially in the middle of the episode. The rest has some nice gags, but that one gag just kills the episode for me.

There is a large cast of characters here, most of them being one offs. There is the doctor, who I actually liked, along with the Mexican Robot. I was indifferent to Patrick’s role in the episode. I actually like how they characterized Fred as a more careless and romantic guy. He sounds like he is in agony, but he really wanted to be with his love. Spongebob is good here as well, not much to say.

If the gag wasn’t repeated so many times, this could have been one of the best of the season, or maybe even the series. The story is interesting and there are actually good jokes here. Top that off with more character exploration with Fred, and some cool new characters, this episode could have gone far. This is one of the few cases where a gag can cause an episode to slip past good into ok range, though this isn’t as bad as its sister episode at the very least...

Mustard O Mine

Considering this is the episode that aired the day after Ink Lemonade, this one might look better by comparison due to not completely sucking. This one is another Spongebob-Patrick-Squidward plot. I remember the day this aired, people were scared that it would be another Ink Lemonade, considering this is another Kaz episode. And certainly this one is way better than Ink. However is this good? Well, it has not the most original premise, and kinda eh one off character, butand considering the episode before, this one does a decent job at doing the formula without the pitfalls of yesterdays episode.

The episode does kinda rip off Chum Caverns and That Sinking Feeling, but this one does the concept better easily. The other episodes were either bland or annoying garbage, and this one has  a bit of fun with the new locations. The episode uses new rules for the mines. Now there are condiments under the walls of the mines. The episode isn’t as excessively wacky as the previous 2 episodes either, so that is a plus. Even without wackiness, the episode looks great. I know it is season 11, but the animation seems a bit better than usual, especially the backgrounds. The episode follows the formula of needing to find something, otherwise the Krusty Krab is doomed, which also has been done before, but this one does keep it a bit interesting.

I do like the random escalator joke and the old man at the Krusty Krab not completely disappearing routine was some good dialogue. Additonially, they do another blood joke, which season 11 likes to do a lot. This is also the one with the unaccompanied minors line which I love, along with the train scene with the Bunnicula face (Prez approved). The episode isn’t too memorable joke wise, but it has some amusing moments here or there.

The characters are fine here. Patrick is much more tolerable here compared to Ink Lemonade. He serves as comic relief, but because he is not the focus, he doesn’t cause to much harm. Squidward isn’t tortured excessively either. The episode threatened to go the Ink Lemonade route in a couple of scenes, such as the train scene and the scene where Patrick dies, but thankfully it stays off that track. The new old man character didn’t really do much for me, but he was alright and had a decent payoff in beating up Squidward.

This one has a few decent things going its way. It has an ok plot and some amusing jokes to keep it afloat. The episode isn’t too memorable or special considering they have done the mine plot before, but compared to Ink Lemonade, it might as well be a godsend. However, it being a godsend to Ink doesn't mean this one is that special or memorable. It is just alright for me, since I think season 11 has just more interesting stories which push more boundaries.

Shopping List

This is one of the seasons more adventurous episodes. This one finally gives Sandy some spotlight as well, which will have a focus in the second half of season 11. The episode does a better job at being adventurous compared to Mustard O Mine in my opinion, even if the stakes are low and it has a predictable twist ending, the episode still manages to be entertaining and fun, while having some cool locations and animation.

The episode is a formulaic set up, almost similar to Scavenger Pants. The characters need to find an ingredient, Spongebob and Sandy find it, Plankton tries to but fails in some punchline, and Plankton gets catapulted out. It is a predictable set up, but it is the jokes it tells that make the episode better, which I will talk about down below. The “twist” is laughably predictable as well. At least Krabs earns his beating here, as he did put Sandy and Spongebob in actual danger.

Plankton shines here. He has a lot of good one liners, especially the “skull and shoulders” line. Extra points for the Dutchman being back in 2d, and randomly having a chainsaw on his face this time. There were also some other good gags, like Mr. Krabs money in a swimsuit and Krabs getting abused at the end (the twist itself is predictable, but the jokes around Krabs getting beat up, particularly the ending, were solid jokes). Not a super funny episode, but it has some good gags there and it was definitely more creative in the humor than the last few episodes.

The characters are written pretty well here for the most part. Plankton is the highlight here, as he does have the best jokes of the episode. Spongebob and Sandy more serve the plot of the episode rather than having too complex of motivations, but their scenes are usually quick, so they don't detract much from the episode, and it is nice to get some Sandy focus in the season. Mr. Krabs is played as a villain here, so it makes sense for him to get punished.

This one is another quick review, but it is a good episode. Better than Mustard O Mine in my opinion. It is a good episode, and has a good adventurous atmosphere, though it isn’t the most memorable, it was entertaining enough. I like when the show gets more experimental, especially in the adventure genre, and this one does a pretty good job at being different with cool and unique set pieces (though not as godly as Sportz).  It just does it's job well, and that is all that I ask for these episodes.
