125a. Pineapple Fever

So after mentioning my hatred of this episode on the XAT earlier, I was asked why Claps?

Let me just put it plain and simple. It was horribly written. I mean everyone thinks it's because of Squidward torture porn. Well guess what, that's not even the worst part. Allow me to share the single worst thing this episode ever spawned. I mean even the guy that taped it cut it off before it could finish.

How mind numblingly awful. It goes on for at least 45 seconds. Yep almost a tenth of the episode is wasted on a god awful joke. I wonder if I can find the Patrick jigsaw puzzle bit because that is absolute filler too. Then it finally starts to have a plot at the halfway point that turns into a horrendous sketch involving crossing lines and going stir crazy.

At one point I thought this episode was just ok, but now I can't stand it and is one of the worst episodes of the show to me.

Clappy you meanie D;

I actually think this is a bright spot in Season 6. The only things I hate are the classic neo-Aaron Springer habits- SpongeBob wastes time at the beginning sticking his tongue out for 10 seconds, and Squidward tears off his eyebrow skin for no reason at all. I love how the plot starts out normal (getting stuck inside during a storm) and then goes batsack insane at the end (the boundaries game, the "Ugh" throwback and regression into cavepeople). I loved most of the gags too ("age....speeding up....30 years per second..." , the tic-tac-toe scene, the interior design bit).

It's still a Season 6 Aaron Springer episode so it has a lot of stupid things in it ("I...Just stepped on one of these nails!" What the- why was that even part of the episode), but for an episode that, by all means should have been awful, it manages to be a light patch in a pretty meh season. To me, at least.

Very well then. How about dragging out all of the unfunny jokes? Even if you did find them funny, you have to admit that Springer unnecessarily dragged them out. I mean why have SpongeBob constantly repeat his agenda for close to a minute? Why have Patrick spend so much time on the last piece of the puzzle? What was with Squidward's involvement in general? I mean this episode probably could have been better as just a SpongeBob and Patrick together piece...but of course it's Springer...and...you know the agenda there with Squidward.

Your turn Nuggets me boi.

I was kidding, but okay. :P

The overlong gags thing is just something that results from Springer generally directing alone. I think it's been said before that when an episode is too short the writers go back in and add things, which is probably where a lot of the filler in the episode came from. And I think that if it was just Patrick and SpongeBob trapped in the house it would have been boring- This episode comes at a point where SpongeBob and Patrick are near their worst, character-wise, and it probably wouldn't have been a very funny episode if Squidward's sarcastic edge wasn't involved. The funniest part of the episode, the boundaries scene, would never even have happened if Squidward wasn't there.

I also like this episode because of the visual designs (it seems like they pretty much told Springer to go crazy this one) and overall the animation is a touch better than in regular episodes.

That's the point though. There was a ton of filler which dragged the episode down a lot to me. I mean the first two minutes introduce the plot, we get pointless filler for five minutes, then Squidward finally snaps, creates the boundaries game, then reenact SpongeBob BC. Also, I think the point of the episode was to dumb down SpongeBob and Patrick's characters to their worst because of Squidward's involvement. I don't think they would have been that bad if it was just the two of them together.

Also, I will admit your point about the animation. However, I don't really judge episodes for their animation style. I'm more for the story, jokes, and other forms of writing. :P

I will give you that the episode was mostly filler, but I don't think most of it brought down the episode. I got a kick out of this:

SpongeBob: I see you even brought your double net!

Patrick: Yep, it's three times as fun!

SpongeBob: Don't you mean twice as fun?

Patrick: What is?

SpongeBob: Your- Nevermind.

Filler? Totally. Stupid? You bet. But I laughed. And I guess that's where we'll have to agree to disagree. :P
