Lmao the Golden Globes are so absurd and crazy.  Deadpool for Best Picture and Ryan Reynolds for Best Actor.  How are they such a prestigious awards show?

That's in the comedy/musical category though so I won't take too much issue with it :P It's an interesting choice but the Globes have always been offbeat so it doesn't surprise me that much. Wish The Nice Guys could've gotten a nod, though.

Pleasantly surprised to see Hailee Steinfeld get recognized even though I don't think she'll win.

Kinda salty about The Americans not getting a Best TV Drama nod but at least Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell got nominated.

And how could I forget? It's pretty cool that Stranger Things got recognized and congrats to Winona Ryder too, she was great.

My thoughts:

-Pleasantly surprised to see Ruth Negga get a nom, thought she wouldn't. She is so good in Loving.

-That Amy Adams snub though...come on. I'm glad Arrival got a Best Picture nom and Best Director for Denis Villenueve, but the prime reason the movie works so well is because of Amy. Did we really need to give Meryl Streep another nomination instead?

-Glad to see Hell or High Water get some love, especially Jeff Bridges who was great in it.

Thoughts:

-Still need to see half of the Best Picture nominees.  I've seen La La Land, Hiiden Figures, Manchester By The Sea, and Hell or High Water and I don't want to spoil how I would rank the four that I've seen...that being said though, Hidden Figures is definitely the worst of the bunch.  I'm glad a film like Hidden Figures was made and is a smash hit at the box office, but it's extremely predictable, very corny, and is not a good movie to me.

-Meryl Streep getting another nomination really pisses me off.  Especially since Florence Foster Jenkins is such a terrible movie with Meryl not even giving her best effort and somehow getting this nomination.  I feel like the Academy is just doing everything in their power at this rate to give Meryl as many nominations as possible so no one ever comes close to breaking her record.

-I know that they are nominated for minor features but the words Academy Awards and the movies Passengers and Suicide Squad makes me cringe.

-I like Jeff Bridges getting nominated just fine and all, but Ben Foster got robbed.  He was the best supporting actor in that movie.  Stole every scene he was in.

-Audition was not one of the best songs in La La Land.  To me, it was the weakest of the bunch.  Would have preferred to see Someone in the Crowd or A Lovely Night.

-I know La La Land is the runaway favorite to win most of the awards.  I understand why since the Academy is a sucker for movie love letters to classic Hollywood.  That's why I love it too, but 14 nominations?  Holy crap.  At least make it a little more competitive and give other films some due recognition too.

Not sure if La La Land needed two noms for Best Original Song tbh. City of Stars is definitely the better of the two though.

I'm also salty that Sing Street didn't get any nods for its music. That movie has some fantastic songs. #justicefordriveitlikeyoustoleit

- I only saw Arrival, La La Land and Hell or High Water as oscars and I won't tell which movie I want to win the most, even though so far It's so obvious. :funny:

- Nice to see Hell or High Water got nominated for some categories. For a movie that was premiered in summer, it really deserved these nominations.

- I'm okay with La La Land getting the most nominations. Yeah a few more movies could have been nominated but I'm pretty much impressed with everything about La La Land, so it deserved it.

- Amy Adams getting snubbed upsetted me. She was terrific in Arrival. I'm so disappointed she didn't get nominated.

- If there's one thing we can agree mostly is that thankfully we got more nominations from black people and their movies. I still haven't seen Moonlight (tho I really want to see that one out of all best pictures.), Hidden Figures and Fences.

- I actually thought Auditions was the most impactful one out of all La La Land songs to me. Perhaps not my favorite one cuz most of others are more energetic but It really brought me feels. I wouldn't mind City of Stars winning this but I would love for Auditions to win this one tbh.

- YES, Doctor Strange got nominated for best visual effects. As much as I think all visual effects of other movies (excluding The Jungle Book cuz I haven't seen that one) were amazing, Doctor Strange should win imo. It was one of the best visually stunning movies I've ever seen in my life. Part of myself kind of felt that Arrival got snubbed here tho because the visual effects of Arrival deserves praise.

- I agree with Clappy. Jeff Bridges was good in Hell or High Water but he didn't blow me away as much as Ben Foster did in the movie.

- I really would love for The Witvch to get nominated for best cinemtography. Too bad it didn't. I kind of wished that movie would get a bit more recognition because I thought it was one of the best horror movies of the decade. I know most audience weren't impressed by it but it really brought me the chills, so it sucks that The Witch didn't get recogniton from oscars. It also could have been the horror movie that get nominated for a very long time. :/

- honestly It's obvious that Zootopia will win the best animated feature since Disney usually wins at this category. Either that or low chance Moana but I would really love for Kubo and the Two Strings to win this time. Spoiler for the list but it's my favorite animated movie of 2016. Everything about it just blew me away. While I did appreciate Zootopia with it's storytelling more, I enjoyed watching Kubo and the Two Strings more and I felt that one was more imaginative.

That's all really. Most of other nominations are fine for me. I can't wait for the oscar night.

Like Silence for example.  After seeing it, I'm shocked that it only got one nomination.  It's a damn great movie that got heavily underlooked...to me at least, but what do I know?  The Academy had to be aware that Martin Scorsese had a movie out this year, right?

Oscars are here in a week.  Here is my rankings for the main five categories.  I would have done director to make it six, but I still haven't seen Arrival.  I'll still do Best Picture though because there is enough nominees to share my thoughts:

Best Picture:

1. La La Land

2. Hell or High Water

3. Manchester By the Sea

4. Moonlight

5. Hacksaw Ridge

6. Lion

7. Hidden Figures

8. Fences

Comments: The first four were all really good.  Although I particularly never plan to sit through Moonlight again.  That was a chore to sit through.  They nominated the wrong Andrew Garfield prestige flick, but Hacksaw was okay.  Lion was fine I guess, but my mind wandered an awful lot during it.  Hidden Figures was predictable and cheesy as fuck.  Like I said above, I wish the subject matter got an actually compelling movie.  Fences was as staged of a movie as they come.

Best Actor:

1. Casey Affleck

2. Ryan Gosling

3. Denzel Washington

4. Andrew Garfield

5. Viggo Mortensen

Comments: Just give the award to Affleck already.  Christ.  Ryan Gosling was great, but he doesn't stand a chance.  Even though I hated Fences, Washington still did a good job.  Once again, wrong Garfield performance; but still I didn't like his portrayal in Hacksaw Ridge. Captain Fantastic...fucking really?

Best Actress:

1. Natalie Portman

2. Ruth Negga

3. Emma Stone

4. Isabelle Huppert

5. Meryl Streep

Natalie Portman, no contest.  Glad to see Loving didn't fly under the radar completely because Negga was great.  Emma Stone was not the best of this group, but she was still great.  Did not see Elle but Isabelle had to be better than Meryl Fucking Streep in that all around terrible Florence Foster Jenkins.  Christ that movie...is it too late to add that to my dishonorable mentions for my Worst of 2016?

Best Supporting Actor:

1. Lucas Hedges

2. Mahershala Ali

3. Dev Patel

4. Jeff Bridges

5. Michael Shannon

Honestly the toughest category.  All these performances were good with no complaints except I would have nominated Ben Foster over Jeff Bridges in terms of Hell or High Water supporting roles.  But man, I'm just going to say the top two were the best of the bunch.  I'm going to give the edge to Hedges though because he wowed me.

Best Supporting Actress:

1. Michelle Williams

2. Naomie Harris

3. Viola Davis

4. Nicole Kidman

5. Octavia Spencer

I'm just going to finally admit it.  Manchester By the Sea had the best acting of any movie all year.  All three nominees should win in case my opinion isn't obvious.  Naomie Harris was great too.  Viola Davis should have won five years ago over Meryl Steep, but she still did good in Fences.  Nicole Kidman was fine too, although I won't remember her role or Lion in a year from now.  Really?  Octavia Spencer was fine too, but I thought her portrayal was the weakest of the Hidden Figures trio.

Casey Affleck deserves the Best Actor Oscar for sure. I'd love to see Natalie Portman win Best Actress but I wouldn't be mad with Emma Stone winning since she was good in La La Land. And Ruth Negga was great too.

I know people are tired of Pixar and Disney winning Best Animated Feature Film but Zootopia totally deserves it this year. It's a fantastic story.

first things first

IN A HEARTBEAT GOT SNUBBED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY??????????

I haven't seen most of these movies that were nominated for the best, so I'll comment on them later. Otherwise, here are some thoughts.

Spoiler

- I'm so shocked Logan got nominated for the best adapted screenplay and it deserved to be. My favorite superhero movie of 2017. So emotionally gut punching and compelling. We need more superhero movies like Logan. It's gonna be so tough for that movie to win against Call Me By Your Name and The Disaster Artist but we'll see.

- Welp, sucks that The Disaster Artist couldn't get nominated, outside adapted screenplay but I can't say I'm surprised, considering sexual assault accusations for James Franco. I still need to see that movie tho.

- Blade Runner 2049 got snubbed for best picture and best directing, as well as Ryan Gosling getting snubbed for best actor. That's my biggest disappointment because that movie was so damn engaging, intellegent and surprising. Oh well...

- I'm okay with any of visual effect nominees. I'd love for Wonder Woman to be included but yeah, during third act, visuals did go downhill a bit. Blade Runner 2049 for the win! Tho I'm so happy War for the Planet of the Apes got nominated for this as well. Godly af visuals.

- Woohoo for Baby Driver's Sound Editing and Mixing nominees. I really hope it wins at both categories.

- Can't talk about Meryl Streep and Danzel Washington nominees but I don't think people will be happy with both. :P

- Lol for The Baby Boss nomination for the best animated movie category. They couldn't even give The Lego Batman Movie or Captain Underpants a chance.
- Damn. So many The Shape of Water, Lady Bird, Three Billboards and Call Me By Your Name nominations. Gotta see those movies asap.

- Yay for more and more Get Out, Dunkirk and Blade Runner 2049 nominations. Those movies were amazing.

- Coco will obviously win for the best animated movie.

Those are my thoughts. What are yours? :funny:

Sad that The Florida Project didn't get much love (it totally deserved a Best Picture nomination IMO) but happy that Willem Dafoe got a Best Supporting Actor nomination. I also agree with WhoBob that In a Heartbeat totally should've gotten a nom for Best Animated Short.

So excited for Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig getting Best Director nominations. I thought the Academy had an anti-Netflix bias but Mudbound got more love than I was expecting: Best Supporting Actress for Mary J. Blige, Best Original Song, Cinematography, and Best Adapted Screenplay! I also worried that The Big Sick would get snubbed, but it managed a Best Original Screenplay nomination! The writing in that movie was great. Wish it could've gotten a BP nom or Best Supporting Actress nom for Holly Hunter but oh well.

Despite the snubs and omissions, there are some interesting picks in the mix. And say what you want about Meryl Streep, but 21 Oscar nominations is impressive.

Now I've got some catching up to do before March 4th

My thoughts are that James Franco got robbed massively.  I thought The Disaster Artist, for as great as I found the film, was a long shot for best picture, so that wasn’t a surprise to me.  That being said, he deserved to at least be nominated, sexual assault accusations or not.  Because you could have used the same argument against Casey Affleck last year and he won Best Actor.  Unacceptable to me.

Also this is the first time in awhile where I’ve seen more of the best picture nominees before the announcements.  Still need to see Call Me By Your Name and Phantom Thread.  All I’m going to say is that I have problems with Three Billboards, Darkest Hour, and The Post.  Three Billboards is a huge front runner and outside of Frances McDormand, I didn’t like practically anything about it.  Darkest Hour does have Gary Oldman’s practically guaranteed Best Actor performance and he really is that good, but everything else is what you’d expect from an awards bait biographical pic.  No real surprises for me.  The Post I found to be a chore to sit through.  I don’t know what it is about Spielberg’s prestige flicks lately, but they are just not as captivating as they use to be.  Probably in the minority with that thought.

For the record, might as well give Meryl Streep a nomination next year for Mamma Mia 2 or whatever the hell else she is going to be in moviewise 2018.  It’s abundantly clear that they aren’t judging her for the performances anymore because I didn’t find yet another nominated role of hers to be engaging.

looking forward to boss baby's oscar win

seriously were there like no animated movies this year or what

there was Coco by Pixar. I still have to see that one but I've heard great things about it.

The Lego Batman Movie was great but sadly It didn't get nominated.

Yes. ...I mean, if you're the Academy.

I'd also consider 2017 as a barely recognizable year for animated films, let alone an infamous year if you ask the kind of people who'll always bring up The Emoji Movie. To be fair though, I eventually thought about how the Lego Batman Movie, Captain Underpants, and Cars 3 weren't all nominated, and if it's because they are all too commercial and don't look like original ideas to the Academy, then I shouldn't feel surprised, but I'm perplexed about one thing. (Captain Underpants was adapted from a series of books and it doesn't get nominated, but (THE) Boss Baby was based on a single book, and it got the spot???)

And if you think that's disappointing, "In a Heartbeat" wasn't nominated for Animated Short of the year. I guess that short was a little too progressive for the Academy.

About the "too progressive": A movie about a gay man won the Oscar last year and another gay romance (Call Me by Your Name) got nominated this year so idk. I don't think that's a reason why not. Still a bummer In a Heartbeat didn't get selected.

I wish the Academy cared more about animation tbh. I don't think it's about original vs. unoriginal ideas. They opened up the voting to people outside the animated film industry branch so some people might not be as invested in that category as others.
