Late to the party here, but about the white washing of the ceremonies and the boycotting over no minorities being nominated....I think the only people who have legitimate beef over getting snubbed are Idris Elba and Michael B. Jordan.  Both of them can make claims since Beasts of No Nation was pretty great although I understand why it wasn't nominated.  The Academy can't get out of their ways when it comes to new formats of movie going and Netflix should be accepted.  Also, Creed was damn great hence why I think more than just Stallone should be represented.  As for Will Smith?  I seriously hope he doesn't actually think that Concussion was some of the best work of his career.  I saw it today and that movie was awful and he was awful in it.  I know the black lives matter movement is important and I do agree because all lives do matter and no one should be treated any differently, but I disagree with Will Smith's stance on being not nominated not because of his race.  If your movie sucks and you suck in it, I point the blame at that being the reason you were not nominated.

But I can't wait to see Chris Rock make a joke about this in his monologue.  This is the kind of material his comedy excels at.

Ok just finished Bridge of Spies.  This is definitely the worst of the nominees I've seen so far.  Which is kind of a shame with the talent involved from directing (Spielberg), writing (The Coen Brothers), and acting (Hanks, Rylance, Alda, etc.) but man...talk about disappointing.  I think of the three, I can point most of the blame at my reason for not liking this is the Coens for the pacing.  The pacing pretty much doesn't exist.  I guess if you like talking movies, you're in for A LOT of talking.  But there are virtually no stakes for these characters to overcome that you just get bored sitting there.  I guess you have the actors who are really trying hard to make you care about this story that could have been told so much better and don't get me wrong, Spielberg is one of the all time greats...but this isn't one of his.  I sure hope Mark Rylance doesn't win Best Supporting Actor.  He was good...not great.  Tom Hanks was better tbh, which is what I usually expect from him.

I wanted to like this.  When Spielberg does historical period pieces, I usually really like them.  But man, this was just not that good and was really disappointing.  Not terrible by any means, just lackluster.  Go ahead and place this on the bottom of the rankings of my best picture nominees.  Such a shame.

Well since I gave my input on every single best picture nominee so far, here are my thoughts on the last two:

Spotlight - Very well acted movie.  I have a soft spot in my heart for movies involving journalism since I took so many classes in it in college.  The Academy seems to as well because it feels like we get one of these journalistic investigation movies nominated for best picture so often.  Spotlight is one of the better one in recent memories primarily due to the acting and the movie not honoring the journalists like these types of movies usually tend to.  I really like that because that has become such a cliche in journalism movies.  If I can give one gripe that holds this movie back against the rest of the competition, it doesn't have that one ICONIC moment you know?  It doesn't have that one thing that will make me remember this amongst it's competitors that doesn't have me griping against the edge of my seat.  Like The Martian has Matt Damon's launch off of Mars to reunite with his team.  Mad Max has that action packed climax against Immortal Joe where they go full on balls to the wall action.  The Big Short has that meeting between Steve Carrell and the bank big wig where the stock market crashed.  Spotlight...nothing incredibly memorable.  I still liked this though.

Room - Leo for Best Actor?  I don't completely buy the hype after seeing The Revenant.  Brie Larson for Best Actress?  I absolutely see and buy heavy amounts into it.  The narrative itself is a good enough script that could have been great, but what really brings this to a whole other level is the acting.  It's so good and it conveys the amount of sadness this whole movie is far better than the script does.  Why is the 5 year old boy Jacob Tremblay not nominated for Best Supporting Actor?  He is somewhat more impressive than an already impressive Brie Larson.  Watching him sheltered in that shed and escaping and experiencing the world for the first time are some of the most impressive acting sequences I've seen from a child actor in years.  That kid is going to be a star someday.  Room could have easily topped my list if the writing was able to convey the internal damage of the situation the characters are in as moving as the actors and directing were able to do.

And with that out of the way, I finally finished seeing all the best picture nominated films.  Here is my personal opinion ranked from best to worst:

1a. The Big Short

1b. Mad Max: Fury Road

3. Room

4. The Martian

5. Spotlight

6. Brooklyn

7. The Revenant

8. Bridge of Spies

My personal rankings aside, man this awards race is intriguing.  Last year's back and forth tug of war between Boyhood and Birdman is nothing in comparison to the virtual four horse race between Spotlight, The Big Short, Mad Max, and The Revenant.  I have no clue who's going to win at this point with all four having equal amounts of momentum.  It's going to be interesting how things unfold over the next few weeks and who really starts to pull away.

So tonight is the night.  I literally have no clue who is going to win best picture, which is exciting.  My guess is The Big Short which seems to have the momentum right now, but that has changed hands so many times that it's not a lock.

As long as it's not Bridge of Spies.

Reddit seems to be convinced Spotlight has it locked up, which I don't buy for a second. It's got stiff competition in The Big Short and The Revenant.

I can see Reddit's case since its won six of the past ten or twelve best picture awards at the other awards season shows.  But The Big Short has won far bigger awards shows best picture titles under its belt like the Producers Guild that has me thinking otherwise.

Should have listened to Reddit.  Spotlight was good enough, but man was I hoping that all the Oscar wins was leading to a Mad Max upset.

Otherwise, only other complaints were for Rylance beating Stallone.  I would have been fine with ANYONE but him, but man Stallone was so fantastic that I thought all the momentum he had made it a lock for him.  And also Writing on the Wall for being one of the worst Bond themes of all time and yet winning Best Song over Lady Gaga's moving Til It Happens to You.  Maybe Inarritu's best director win, I'm still somewhat on the fence about that since he did well directing wise, but thought McKay should have won or even George Miller.  Otherwise, nothing else really that I can complain about since I had no real problems with a majority of the wins.  Right on the money...although I am pretending Alicia Vikander really won for Ex Machina instead of that shitty Danish Girl movie.

Spotlight winning best picture shocked me, I really wanted Mad Max to win so badly. I'm also disappointed that Mad Max didn't win for visual effects but hey, Ex Machina's visuals were good too. I'm fine with everything else. I'm so happy for Leo to win his first Oscar and Brie Larson def deserved the Oscar for best actress. I'm so happy that Mad Max won at other stuff as well. This wasn't such a bad night for Oscars, I had fun watching it. Chris Evans, Woody and Buzz, Minions, girl scouts, all these funny and crazy stuff.

EDIT: Almost forgot. How dare Writings on the Wall win, instead of Til It Happens to You? Nothing against, Sam Smith, it's just the song was so dull.

Chris Rock was a great host. I'm so glad he didn't shy away from making jabs at Hollywood's diversity problem.

I'm so happy that Brie Larson won <3 She was so good in Room. Haven't seen The Revenant but I'm just glad to see Leo finally win an Oscar. I do wish that Stallone or Christian Bale had won Best Supporting Actor but oh well.

Lady Gaga's performance almost had me in tears, especially since she brought sexual assault survivors out on stage.

Pretty good show, can't complain that much.

Glad to see Hell or High Water hasn't been forgotten.  Fantastic movie.

Still need to see everything else (minus Sully as well) nominated since I slacked on Hacksaw Ridge and Arrival last month.
