Kind of a hot take, but I agree with Alan Moore that "The Killing Joke" is not a very good story (and arguably has done more harm to the character of the Joker than good - namely in cementing his "crazy serial killer" incarnation as the default personality and making him so "iconic" to the point of overuse)
-
I personally thought the story was fine (controversial story elements not withstanding), but I can understand your perspective. If anything 'Good', can be said for "The Killing Joke", is that it was the comic book that inspired Mark Hamill to audition for The Joker in the 1989 movie version of "Batman", and eventually get to play him, during "Batman: The Animated Series".
-
@Orlando BloomThat's true - it also gave us "The Dark Knight" and "Joker" films.

Ayyyyyyy, teenj! Long time no see!
-
can I offer you a rum ham in this trying time?
-
something I realized: SBC hasn't had any significant superhero lit stuff since teenj

OK, so I wanna apologize for the delay in Supreme: The Ivory Icon's first episode releasing; for some reason I haven't been able to focus. Should be out by either later this week or next week.
On another note I'll be doing something special to tie into this lit: a monthly issue-by issue review of Alan Moore's run on Supreme, which lasted 22 issues (23 if you count the fanmade Issue #64, which I personally do).
-
Honestly, I'd argue that Supreme: The Ivory Icon is...basically an apology for PR: MVF's second season, in the same way Moore's Supreme run was basically his apology for his '80s work, especially Watchmen.
-
I personally liked "Watchmen" as an interesting deconstruction of various superhero genre tropes...although I DO find it interesting that the only adaptation of "Watchmen" (besides the actual graphic novel) that Alan Moore DOES approve of, is the INTENTIONALLY badly made, late 1980's animated series version, which takes SEVERAL liberties with it's story source!
-
Watchmen is honestly the only superhero deconstruction I like for one reason: it's still idealistic in the end, but not an optimistic story. And in the end, it's still very much a superhero story (especially with Rorschach still sticking to his uncompromising views in spite of the fact that up until then, doing so was shown to be a bad thing for him).

I'm honestly glad I returned to SBC and decided to start working on a lit again, I haven't felt this creatively invigorated in a while

Hey, guys - apologies for not being here so long; just been busy with trying to figure out Cakewalk so my music can take off.
-
new year's resolutions:
-do devotional journals for my pantheon (yup, i'm a hellenic polytheist again)
-actually get all my writing/music projects started
-get my personal hygiene in check
-start a shift away from anarchist politics on my twitter
-Start my podcast
-exercise and spend time with family more

I have an idea on how I'd want the Renegade the Unicorn and the Triple Sicks' album (provisionally titled "...In Whore-ifying 36D!") to be produced: similarly to the Beatles' famous sessions for Please Please Me; that is, recorded live, with as few takes and little to no overdubbing as possible.

If my music career doesn't work out, I can always make a career in writing what's called "bizarro fiction". It's the literary equivalent to a "cult film" section at the video store - some are goofy, some are trashy exploitative shlock, some is incomprehensible "highbrow art"...it's subversive, it's weird (hence the name), and it's absolutely *perfect*. I have always had a fascination with B-movies and exploitation films since middle school (something I must've inherited from my dad; he loved those kinds of things), and after all these years, that might be the niche I've been looking for when it comes to making a career as an author.
-
I think I'm gonna release all the music I make under a Creative Commons-BY-SA license. Because fuck copyright and intellectual property - no way in hell am I restricting my art from the people for money.
-
So, I'm finally buckling down and taking the first steps to getting my music career on track: I'm intending to start teaching myself music theory and have discussed forming a band with some Twitter friends; I've decided we're calling ourselves "Renegade the Unicorn and the Triple Sicks".
This isn't exactly a big accomplishment that's worthy of SBC, but I'm just so excited that I'm taking this initiative to achieving a dream I've had for years - to play music in the styles I grew up with (hardcore punk, metal, and psychobilly).
-
Now that I no longer have to worry about things in my personal life, I can FINALLY finish "Yes, Destiny".

"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" Narrator: "And there was much rejoicing." Knights of the Round Table, flat joy: "Yeah." Narrator: During the winter, they were snowbound, and had to eat brave Sir Robin's Minstrels, and there was much rejoicing." Knight of the Round Table, LESS of a flat joy: "Yeah!"

It I were to ever write my own fanmake for @4EverGreen 's One Shot Stories (or even for my Riting Revue), it'd be one for "Joker", starring Daffy Duck in the title role.
