    So I haven't told anyone here this, aside maybe JJS, but I moved out to los angeles a few months ago to work in animation. I'm headed to art school in a few weeks. Gonna try to break into either storyboarding or character design. I've already built a network here and have done a lot of socializing 😄

    I just can't understand how everyone was dunking on this show, pointing out how just plain SHADY it is that Nick greenlit spin-offs, something Hillenburg was vocally opposed to, weeks around his passing; to getting pissy and bitching about how everyone who has an ethical issue with the idea being a sexist or being entitled or stupid, just because some of the crew started getting harassed and some of them talked about working hard on it.

     

    I've never seen people flip-flop like this so hard before. Did anyone call people dunking on Transformers an asshole because some of the people who worked on it put effort into it?

    Did anyone get mad at anyone who dared to shit on the new Tom and Jerry movie because the animation wasn't half bad and the artists worked hard on it?

     

    Some idiots harassing Vincent and Pinkie, and the crew working hard on it don't invalidate the ethical issue of spin-offs being greenlit when a network's #1 show creator is dying and losing the ability to effectively communicate.

     

    I've also seen people retroactively invalidate any criticism of the show because they explained the timeline inconsistency with Sandy; and because a lot of the storyboard poses carried over.

    All that proves is the crew tried to make as good a show as possible during the circumstances, and that they care about the show. That doesn't automatically make the show good.

    It's not awful. It has some funny dialogue and great character designs. I like a lot of the callbacks (Plankton's college fund, baby Pearl, Bubble Bass, Kevin the cucumber), and a lot of the poses and visual expressions are great. I forgot who said this; but earlier in the thread someone said KK's basically CG new Spongebob and that's basically right. I guess people who like the newer episodes might dig this. I don't care for them though, so it leaves me feeling empty.

     

    ...But it's still not very good. Aged down Spongebob is a stupid concept that goes against the idea of the series...these characters are childish adults, what's the point of physically aging them down? I know Dave said on discord the show's humor isn't aged down, but it felt pretty aged down to me.

     

    The animation isn't very good. I applaud the team for trying their best to emulate the squash and stretch of 2d Spongebob, I think they did a great job on pushing the expressions like on the main show; but the lighting still looks garish and cheap. A lot of the character models look inadvertedly creepy. I understand translating a 2d IP like Spongebob to CG is hard, but Sponge Out of Water and Sponge on the Run look gorgeous and just about perfectly translate SB to CG. The art style could've worked; they just needed a much bigger budget. And Spongebob more than makes enough money to justify it; anyone who says otherwise is caping for Viacom.

     

    Anyway, this went about as expected. I don't know why anyone would think this would be *unsavagely* awful, the newer episodes aren't half bad and a lot of the crew clearly put a lot of time and passion into the show.

     

    I also don't think it not being that bad is justification for it not being that good either; or retroactively invalidating the (still valid) argument of whether Steve would've approved of KK or not.

    Watched half the pilot... I don't get the logic behind putting the pilot up on Youtube...if you want people to sub to your service for it why would you give people it for free??

    So it's almost judgement day...

     

    this is gonna be the most entertaining day of the fandom, lol.

     

    i'm betting a 52% on rotten tomatoes and the consensus being "it's not good but it's not nearly as bad as we thought it would be"

     

    Twitter animation fanboys are prob gonna use that as justification to think it's a masterpiece tho. "it's not complete dogshit, therefore all criticisms of it are retroactively invalid"

    I don't mean to sound callous but people really need to let go of this.

     

    Yes, it's sad that it's very possible that Steve wouldn't have approved of Kamp Koral, and it's debatable if he even knew about it, but spin-offs were inevitable.


    For any entertainment property the size of Spongebob, getting milked is par the course. It's incredibly tragic Steve passed so young, but even if he had lived an extra 20 or 30 years we would've seen this scenario happen, it just would've been delayed.

     

    It's debatable if it would have even happened had he not passed. He clearly was stepping back and letting Paul, and later Vincent and Marc take the reigns. He let Sponge out of Water have a lot of CG and superheroes, something from interviews and anectodes, isn't something he would've let happen with the first movie. He let a completely (well, with the exception of Aaron Springer and a few old board artists) new crew direct an-all CGI movie with a bunch of pop songs and pop culture references. He let a broadway musical happen, something he'd been on record as being opposed to. I honestly feel like at a certain point he would've let spin-offs happen anyway, maybe not this one, but he was clearly letting other people take over the franchise.

    Vincent is very possibly telling a white lie or stretching the truth, it conflicts with what he told others about Steve's knowledge of the show a while back, but I just feel dirty about people continually pressing him about it. He's grieving from Steve (and his two friend's passings) and wasn't in the emotional state to pin down for sure. Other people on the crew didn't seem to know for sure either. The only person remaining who could give a definitive answer would be Paul, but if I were him I wouldn't want to step foot in this drama personally, and even then he's working on information Steve relayed to him years, if not decades ago.

     

    I don't think Pieguy's an asshole, or malicious, he's always level-headed in his videos, but I don't quite think he grasps the power he has with an audience of his size. Every bit of his own speculation he throws out is like attracting crabs to a bucket.

    His video was mostly accurate and lines up with what I've heard, but he also isn't considering that development on the biggest kid's show in history takes a while- a spin-off of this magnitude would not have been pitched and greenlit in the span of one meeting. There had to have been rumors of it around the office for months beforehand. No one greenlights a multi-million dollar project, especially one with an all-new CG pipeline, on a whim.

     I also don't get why he thinks Nick PR would have a more direct answer than Vincent's? If Vincent (who not only worked with Steve up to his passing), but several other crew members don't know for sure, why would a Nick PR person know?

    I don't know much about CG animation, but the character models look fine. The animation itself is fine.

     

    It seems like it's the lighting and texturing that makes it look really bad. There's a few outdoor shots that look alright but the shadows look too dark and muddy constantly.

     

    I think SpongeBob can work really well in CG- Sponge out of water and Sponge on the run proved it, but I think you need a big budget to polish the lighting and such.

    TV caliber CG just looks like a bad PS2 licensed game.

     

    And Spongebob makes enough money to where they could put a movie-like budget into it. I don't get it

    that's shocking because from what vincent had said on twitter they had completed 13 half hours last summer?

     

    They're distracting a lot of attention away from the main show at this point

    nick has the legal right to do whatever they want, no one is dismissing that. people are debating if the show's creator would've liked the idea or not. That's a different question.

    Gravity Falls ended 5 years ago, why would it win the KCAs now?
