So I’d say around April 2018 I saw that on steam guacamelee cost a grand total of 1 dollar and 50 cents. This steam deal was irresistible so I picked it up and decided to play it. I love the first game, while the exploration feels a little bit meh, the combat is really fun to play with. The story was nice to go through and I adore the artstyle.
The sequel had been announced already and playing the first game got me really excited for the new one. Oh it’s coming to PS4 first. AIright, I asked for a PS4 for my bir-doesn’t get a PS4.
The worst part is it came out like the day after my bday lmao. Now we’re in December but I just didn’t get the game even though I had the PS4. At this point the other consoles launched already. It was still on my list to play but then I realized “I’m going on vacation and I don’t have any single player games”. Ok I have some gold coins on the Eshop lemme get a 20 dollar card.
This game is just like the first one in terms of gameplay. Look for this review I really hope you’ve played the first game. Anyway, Juan has the same powers from the first game and just like the first you need to gradually unlock them overtime (again). New to this game however is a complete overhaul in the chicken power up. Pollo Power has a much larger purpose than it did in the first game.
The plot has the same charm as the first games did with some nice dialogue with a style of humor that heavily relies on pop culture references and puns (there’s a wonderwall joke).
The art style was gorgeous in this game just like the first one and I really don’t know what to add from here.
I give this game a 8/10. Next review will likely be Celeste which I finished a few days ago.
Ice Age is getting its own blog entry but here's some other movies I watched:
I watched Lion King tonight so I'm gonna review that too.
This movie was.... interesting. It felt very hipster-ish I suppose. The movie's pace and space sequences were really fucking cool. I like how it doesn't glorify shit. I honestly dont have much of an opinion on this movie. I guess I recommend it. Is it even in theaters at the moment this movie fucking tanked.
This movie is some good shit. Has tons of laughs and I very much recommend it. I don't wanna spoil anything but go watch it. The bluray is cheap as fuck. Hell the mel brooks collection as a whole is pretty cheap.
It's Lion King, everything that has been said about this movie has already been said. It is really fucking good. I always forget how great it is until I re-watch it. The movie looks gorgeous on Blu-Ray (I'm used to watching the dvd or VHS lmao). Also neat little fact, the greedy disney men put most of the legacy special features on the digital version of the signature edition (diamond is long out of print).
Look I legit spent a week watching Ice Age movies so that's gonna be a large blog post chunk. I really haven't watched that many movies in October. November has a lot of shit coming out:
Bohemian Rhapsody, Grinch, Wreck it ralph 2 and a marathon I will likely do eventually of something. I watched like half of happy feet that's why I didn't review it. I can possibly finish my Ice Age Reviews tonight.
I watched a ton of movies this past month. A lot of animated stuff but also some live action in there. Also not in order watched either lol
I hinted at this last time. The bluray did come in on september 1st and I did watch it. I don't think it was as good as the rest of the internet feels about it. Like it's a good movie with a really appealing CGI-2D aesthetic. I think the movie deserves more love but it gets more than enough now so...
I heard the game on steam is really good lol
This is a rewatch of the movie. I loved it from second watch (first watch was at like 7 years old lmao). This could get its own blog post if I wanted to but holy shit go watch this movie please. It's so good. The criterion blu is the best obviously but if you're on a budget the regular blu goes for like 5 bucks lol.
This movie was pretty good. The gimmick of THE WHOLE MOVIE TAKES PLACE ON SCREENS imho works very well. Now while I haven't rewatched this movie I have heard there's lots of easter eggs hidden in the background. The bluray turn around rate is surprisingly small for this movie cause I think its coming out like October 30th lol. It's gripping as hell so go pick it up.
(this along with the next movie was a late august watch)
This movie is boring as shit. It has some cool moments but like, the main plot of the movie drags on. Kinda wanted to stop in the middle of it but decided to keep watching until the end. The movie's aesthetic is gorgeous. The dark grimy aesthetic feels like a video game which I believe honestly works for this movie. Overall if you're not a TMNT fan I do NOT recommend watching this movie as you'll be lost. If you're a TMNT fan, maybe watch it if you're bored (or were stuck buying it when it came with 1-3 on bluray).
I am a ratchet and clank fan at this point. I've played every full length game besides the reboot and Deadlocked. This movie is awful. It ruins the realy good plot the original game had and in return made a very bland buddy story. I can complain about how they could've done so much more with this movie but instead I'll drop some knowledge.
1. This has the same director as TMNT (2007)
2. Ratchet's voice actor is actually Leo's VA in that movie and Mikey's VA voiced Ratchet in the first game lol. James Arnold Taylor took over after the first game.
Another really good movie. It had humor but was also serious. Idk if this is sad but it's the first Spike Lee movie I've watched. I need to watch more of his shit. The final message the movie was going for was very obvious in the beginning. The movie was powerful and important. It's still showing in theaters around me so go watch it you guys.
I watched these 2 VERY cursed movies. Brother Bear 1 is actually an alright flick that gets really interesting and sad during the ending plot twist. I actually do recommend Brother Bear 1 believe it or not. I like the On My Way song lol.
The coolest part of brother bear is how the aspect ratio shifts after the first 22 minutes symbolically. It's a really cool choice that a lot of movies don't do. Makes Brother Bear very unique in a way
Brother Bear 2 is when it starts getting messy. All the shit that made Brother Bear 1 "alright" has gotten amplified for the worse. The moose are more in the forefront now and have a boring subplot. Oh god the plot of the girl. What a useless fucking plotline, WHY IS THERE ARRANGED MARRIAGE
BEAR. Yeah don't watch Brother Bear 2 (for some weird reason it's the only one on netflix). Here's the catch Disney did...
Brother Bear on Bluray comes with 2 on the same disc. They never made it available individually that way. They did that asshole move for a lot of movies (well at least fantasia had each movie on separate discs)
Everyone knows how good Emperor's New Groove is that it's useless to discuss lmao. Let's get to the real topic here, Kronk's New Groove. On yet another awesome bluray double pack we have a cursed movie. The problem with Kronk's New Groove is that I feel that it tries too hard at capturing the spirit of the original to the point where it really feels desperate. It has like 3 different plotlines going on. The worst plotline is the old folks/yzma one and the most fun one was the ending one. Overall don't watch this movie. Just watch the original movie and you'll have a lot more fun
This movie was good. Had an interesting moral that I wasn't expecting. The songs were absolute garbage and felt incredibly forced in. Like the movie absolutely does not need any of those songs except maybe the one by Common. Even then that could've just been done with words. The comedy was typical high quality WAG(Warner Animation Group) stuff.
Yeah October is coming I don't want to see a lot of movies but I think my mom wants to see Fahrenheit 11/9 so I'll go with her. Might see Venom. Don't know what else to say I'm fucking tired.
I've watched a lot of movies this month...
Not gonna go over rewatches too much but I did rewatch chicken little one day. Wow it's still shit. Also rewatched despicable me 3 (wow it was incredibly boring) These movies are not in chronological order of watching them.
It was fine. I found the pacing a bit TOO slow, but i liked it. Ewan McGregor as christopher robin was weird cause i kept thinking of obi wan but that's not that really the film's problem. It was really cute.
Idk why but I watched this the same day I watched christopher robin. I bought this on amazon a few days before cause it was pretty cheap. I had always thought of it as "that one (there's another I just forget frankenweenie lol) stop motion movie Tim Burton ACTUALLY directed". I went in practically knowing nothing about this movie. In fact I had just seen the poster lol. I liked the movie. Had a nightmare before christmas vibe (obviously) and the songs were good. I recommend it.
Hey that pokemon 3 pack bluray I got has to be put to use somehow. I was with a friend and we were bored so we decided to watch pokemon: the spell of Unown. It's pretty good for a pokemon movie I'd say. It's not amazing or anything but at least the plot feels more climactic. Recommended if you like Pokemon, not recommended if you don't.
I enjoyed Eighth Grade a lot. It was a good coming of age movie (also watching the trailers before this made me realize that A24 makes like 2 kinds of genres. Coming of age and weird horror). I don't feel like writing too much but I did feel like it got today's modern culture pretty on point. In terms of the A24 coming of age movies I've seen I preferred lady bird. Also shouldn't have been rated R.
My mom wanted to bring me to see a movie for my birthday. We both wanted to see blacKkKlansman but we didn't actually look at showtimes so we didn't end up making it to that. We had both heard crazy rich asians was good so i watched it. It was alright. A generic rom com that from what I heard copy pastes the kind of shit you'd see in asian soap operas. I felt it was a bit long but in reality it's not, I was just expecting a shorter movie.
I didn't even start that dreamworks animation 2d marathon thing. Prince of Egypt is coming to bluray soon so I'm gonna wait for that (I heard the netflix version isn't in the best quality. (Not to mention apparently they did a new remaster according to news articles from earlier this year). I did some amazon ordering but that shit is gonna be coming by september 1st so it won't qualify.
I know Fantastic Mr. Fox is godly (I own the old dvd) but I haven't seen treasure planet (I've heard great things about it though).
Final note: NEVER buy blurays at barnes and noble. They're like way overpriced. Fantastic Mr Fox was the maximum msrp (40 dollars) but anywhere else you can go that release is like 25. Trying to sell SB Season 8 for like 15 bucks when it's really 10 nowadays. Also as your resident ratchet & clank fan, I'll probably review that movie soon. Haven't seen it yet.
Peace out until my next blog post.
Yeah what am I doing….
(The Puss in Boots review is way later in this wall of text if you wanna skip to that)
First I’m gonna do the stuff on the dvds then I guess I’ll do the holiday specials. I’ve seen shrek the halls so many times I don’t think I need a recap for that so that wont be rewatched.
“Shrek’s Karaoke Dance Party”
I learned lord Farquad’s henchman’s name was Thelonius. It’s a nice generic DVD special feature. It’s like 3 minutes of Shrek and friends singing parts of famous songs. From what I know the only way to watch this special is through the Shrek 1 VHS, DVD or Blu-Ray. I don’t think its on Netflix. Also yo you know baha men are on the soundtrack to this movie lmao. There’s a music video on the special features that is in 4:3 and what looks like 240p. I’ll link it in the comments if you guys want it.
Lol constantly switching between these blurays makes me HATE the dreamworks animation logo being 25 seconds long and unskippable.
“Far Far Away Idol”
Lol guys remember american id-wait it’s still going? So this one is actually pretty fun imho. I enjoyed it. They actually got Simon Cowell to do his own voice for this. This doesn’t age amazingly if you weren’t into American Idol around the time. I guess it ages well for you UK X Factor folks. Also I didn’t mention this before but I think they remastered both the Shrek 1 dance party and this one for the dvds because they look pretty nice and are 16:9 widescreen. Compared to the music videos at least lol.
Lol so I watch this right and all of a sudden it’s like “It’s your turn to vote”, fuck it guys puss gets my vote. Ok real talk this has multiple endings. Most of them apparently end with simon winning so we gotta see this. Now I choose donkey he did win.
>If the viewer chooses Donkey, Puss, or Shrek & Fiona, the winner will perform an encore.
Ok we’re choosing doris lol. There we go we got the second ending lol. Cowell btw is not doing his own singing.
Lmao the counting crows music video ends with an ad for the ost right and I had no idea who any of the names were besides Counting Crows and David Bowie. Anyway the ways you can watch this include the original shrek 2 VHS, DVD and Blu-Ray as well as on Netflix. However I’ve heard the Netflix version doesn’t allow you to choose so I’d go for the bluray/dvd version if I were you. Shrek wiki says the vhs ending tells you this: “Cast your vote for the winner now! If you want to register your vote with millions of other "Shrek" fans, go to www.shrek2.com/idol.” apparently there was a online vote as well and doris won.
Shrek 3 has none of these on the dvd… shows how good that movie is lmao
“Donkey’s Caroling Christmas-tacular”
Lemme introduce this by saying I had never seen this before today. Sing along subtitles will be on. This is just Shrek and friends singing their own renditions of christmas songs. The only confusing thing about this is that somehow those alternate universe ogres exist in this universe but whatever lore doesn’t matter. This is on the Shrek 4 bluray with the rest of the special features. HOWEVER the dvd does things a little differently. You need to buy a double pack dvd that comes with the normal forever after dvd and a separate caroling dvd.
It might also be on itunes but I’’m not sure about that.
“Shrek’s Yule Log”
It’s a decent yule log I guess, it has a bunch of fun jokes but I’m not sitting through all 30 minutes. Same rules apply as the previous dvd.
I’m gonna do the puss minimovie with the Puss review so you have to wait a little bit further for that.
Now for the tv specials and not dvd related things
"Shrek The Halls"
This one isn’t completely fresh in my mind but I think it came out after shrek 3. It’s actually pretty good iirc. I end up watching it every year around that time. The only way to watch this is through buying the dvd, the dreamworks holiday classics compilation on itunes and by buying the oddly rare as fuck “DreamWorks Holiday Classics” blu ray. I can not find this anywhere except one amazon third party listing. I know it exists but for now your best way to watch this in hd is by waiting for it to air on ABC around christmas time (warning might move to nbc this year but we will see) or to buy it on itunes.
I swear I own the dvd for this but I can’t find it so we’re going on netflix. If the internet is really bad with the smart tv I’ll move to laptop.
The internet was pretty bad so
Ok its pretty good. The way it kinda tells multiple stories are pretty good and the humor actually worked. Now if you wanna watch this I think there are only a few ways of watching. iTunes, Netflix (the cheapest way), buying the dvd and finally buying the oddly hard to find bluray. The Netflix version is under "Dreamworks Spooky Stories" as well as "Shrek's Swamp Stories"
Here's an interesting case. It's a ride at universal studios Florida (and singapore and japan in fact singapore has its own shrek land lmao). Hollywood replaced it with the Dreamworks Theater (basically a way they can promote their newest movies with 4d experiences). So how am I going to watch this? Well lucky for us Shrek 4D has multiple separate releases just without the ride. Now let's begin the experience on Netflix this time.
It's actually pretty good. I see this working very well as a ride/ In fact you can feel the 4d parts if you know where to look. The jokes land. The thing shows at universal so the movie's animation quality is very high. It's about as long as your average spongebob episode. Now to watch it there are a couple of releases. Netflix which I already mentioned is the highest quality one (besides going on the ride itself lol). The dvd has been reissued multiple times but in exchange for hd you get an official 3d version of it with the option to watch in 2d only. I think the dvd is part of a 2 pack with the original movie but thats long out of print. Apparently it is obtainable through the "Shrek's Thrilling Tales" dvd named "The Ghost of Lord Farquaad" (which has a monsters vs aliens short on it as well... Waaaait)
>>>I have to go find this
Damn it. Wait no I don't. I think I've seen it but have no recollection of it other than a fun little bit of trivia. Did you know that this was at one point officially released for the 3ds as an exclusive (its on the the thrilling tales dvd i just mentioned now as well).
I remember the 2nd one released on the 3ds a lot more. Because I paid 2 dollars for it.
Wow I wonder what this is parodying? Basically its a parody of the music video but with shrek and friends. It's on the scared shrekless dvd in 480p and 2d. It's delisted from the eShop at this point so the only way to watch the 3ds version is someone filming it with their camera
Also lmao it has that paramount copyright thing. My 3ds with this video is now owned by my cousin. I could get to his house and watch it on there eventually but I'm not doing that.
Holy shit guys... I got through all the shrek spinoff material things. Now we get to the big one.
Puss In Boots
The sad part is it could be the best animated film of that year because 2011 was a shit year for animated movies. Everything written before this part was when my bluray hadn't arrived in the mail.
The Puss In Boots Review:
Lmao amazon still think it hasn't arrived but they're completely wrong. Anyway the movie is pretty good. However it is unlike anything else in this franchise. Instead of being more of a comedy its very action and adventure focused with some comedy sprinkled in. There's some zorro parody and its overall pretty fun to watch. Puss is as good of a character as he usually is. I remembered a lot more of this movie than I thought but then I realized I had watched it a few years ago and my last time seeing it was not in 2011. I kinda want to get the puss in boots game I bet it's fun.
My overall ranking of the shrek movies (including PiB)
Wait i'm forgetting the mini movie!
"Puss in Boots: The Three Diablos"
It's the same kind of adventure as the full movie but lighter and only 11 minutes. There's a lot of cute scenes in it and I'd watch it if you get the blu-ray. Oh and btw like before with that donkey christmas spectacular the dvd version is only available in a long out of print double pack with the original movie and puss in boots. The short is also on Netflix which is one of the easier ways to watch in HD.
I think I'm done with all the shrek related mini stuff. There's the puss in boots netflix show but thats like 75 half hour episodes long, I can't do that. There's what seems to be an interactive movie thing on netflix related to it but I haven't watched the show.
You know when I initially viewed the shrek franchise as a whole before like Sunday I would've thought the only good stuff was 1 and 2 and almost everything else in the franchise was shit. In reality most of this franchise is actually pretty good but with a few shitty moments sprinkled in. I'm sorry for writing what is basically like 3 pages long in google docs about the fucking shrek series.
Next I'm probably going to go for all the 2d animated dreamworks films. There's only 5 so I'll do it all in one blog entry. 2 of them are religious films but atheism will not be some blinding of my opinion to those movies.
During the events of amazon prime day I decided to do some impulse purchases. They aren't all gonna be reviewed here but some will be. The first thing that will be talked about is this buy:
Yeah. I think it was 16 not 20 but whatever. Basically I'm gonna review/talk about all these. I've watched them all in the span of 3 days. Sunday-Tuesday. Shrek 1-4 let's go.
This movie is like incredibly good. I know Shrek is a meme and all that shit but the humor and jokes land so well. The emotion actually works pretty well. The cgi surprisingly holds up somewhat decently. It also made me realize how much this movie has affected animation as a whole. The characters are all key to the enjoyment of the movie and I like the smaller scale this story has compared to the later movies. A shit ton of movies have taken cues from this, whether it be the adult jokes or just the le funny satire that even Disney does now. Knowing me I'll probably come back to this movie quite a few times. If you have somehow never watched Shrek (which I'd be really surprised if you haven't) go watch it now. It's on Netflix (none of the other movies are however so take note of that).
How often is a sequel at an almost even level with the predecessor. It happens a few times in animation, the Toy Story movies, Kung Fu Panda 2 (3 is weaker to me), Madagascar 2 (hey its of an equal level) and more have done it. Shrek 2 is added to this list. The way of satire here feels somewhat different here then it did in Shrek 1 but it still has the same charm. The jokes are pretty damn good. This is when the stories start to have a larger scale. Whether it be the growing concerns of keeping Shrek and Fiona's marriage stable or just straight up villains trying to take the throne it starts to build up shit that's really important to later movies. I recommend this one too. But after seeing the first one. The easiest way to get this movie seems to be either the dvd or iTunes. Universal recently reprinted almost all of the Dreamworks movies after realizing that all the Dreamworks releases that were out wasn't money going to them but rather Fox so finding the movies should be easy, you'll just have to deal with horrifically generic covers lmao.
oofing is coming up its
Shrek the Third...
Also I just realized this while writing but I think the name is a pun on people being like [last name] the [number]. Anyway this is the worst Shrek movie. Do you like a point of humor where it feels generic. Do you like writers trying too hard to recapture the magic. Unsurprisingly the writing team is different from the last 2 movies. I mean 2 of the writers worked on the last 2 movies but whatever. Now is when the family drama kicks in. There's a very big death that I think is supposed to be mainly an emotional moment but it's just funny. The emotional shit with Artie feels incredibly forced. Oh shit how can I forget the ogre babies. There's one scene that will never be forgettable from this movie (it's also shit), its the dream sequence with epic gross out that doesn't work. You don't need to fully watch this movie to understand the 4th one. The only thing you'll miss is that Shrek had kids and was worried but now loves them (something that I just summarized lmao). Artie is completely irrelevant to later movies. I actually read on the Shrek wiki he was supposed to be in it but was cut and I can only assume it's cause Dreamworks didn't want to pay Justin Timberlake again. This one also is in the same situation as shrek 2 if you want to watch it.
Shrek Forever After (final chapter my ass)!!!!
Finally an improvement. It's not on Shrek 1 and 2 levels but it's fine on it's own. I liked the weird alternate universe shit and it kinda brings you into it more. For the first time in a while it feels like the movie is mainly Shrek's movie. All focused on his individual growth and it works. I like how he has to re meet all his old friends to see them again. It has some funny moments in it too. Do The Roar is really funny for some reason to me. In fact, the writing as a whole has seemed to improve since 3. I'm too lazy to check the writing team for this one. Now I do have to admit, besides Rumpelstiltskin, who was voiced by our boy SpongeBob crewman Walt Dohrn (he worked on s2-3 iirc), a lot of the newer characters aren't very memorable. Like in a few days I wouldn't be able to tell you any of those resistance ogres' names. Overall though I feel the movie just works more at the end. It feels wholesome and kinda just has this weird nostalgic tone to it. It held up after my last time seeing it had been 8 years ago in its og theatrical release.
Overall the series is mainly consistent besides 3. My ranking of the movies is
Now what did I mean by "final chapter my ass", well: Shrek 5 was confirmed to be in very early development a few years ago. At earliest it was estimated for 2019 but we're not hitting that in fact lets look at the upcoming Dreamworks slate, specifically the untitled movies.
Jesus 44 Dreamworks films... ANYWAY, we're getting Shrek 5 at earliest by late 2021. But Shrek movies like releasing in may so I'd pin it near that April 2022 slot.
Do you think I'm forgetting a movie?
I'm not forgetting puss in boots. This review will be continued tomorrow with part 2! Puss In Boots and maybe some of those weird Shrek spin-off things on Netflix lmao.
